  1. You may think that buying a complete Jeep will save you a lot of money, but bear in mind nearly everything will be worn out or need work in some way. Engine, gearbox, axles, steering box etc parts are not cheap, NOS may not be available and reproduction parts vary a lot in quality. Whatever you think it may cost to do a restoration... it will cost more!

  2. I did mine in my Sabre. Booked the test online, examiner came to the house. He was an ex-army driving instructor. He stood and watched while I did a few circuits round the houses. A couple of manoeuvres, Highway Code questions and it was done. It might have changed now. I think it cost around £65.

I dont know when you registered yours but on DVLA advice in 2018 I registered my spartan as a Crawler, I also advise another person in June last year and they had there 2 CVRT's registered as Crawlers to. I would say if in doubt call DVLA but not sure how many staff are actually manning the phones.

And of Course things change all the time with DVLA requirements so I may be talking out of my hat

    Hi Lance,

The issue with the Fox is that it has 4 wheels but is not a goods vehicle, which is what confuses the DVLA. The Department for Transport have advised people on several occasions to classify it as a Motor Tractor which is what we did with ours, as John suggests.

Registering a CVRT as a crawler is not an issue as it’s obviously got tracks so the DVLA staff can easily compute that!

  4. It depends on age. The later ones, from 1980 I think, had the civilian style pointy half shafts rather than the flat ones fitted from new. Mines an ‘83 and had the pointy ones.

If someone has broken a half shaft in civilian ownership then it’s possible they fitted a civvy one as they’re easier to source.

Well i've got a decent amount of paperwork for my Spartan but i still lack a true in depth vehicle manual. Do you know where i can find one? i found one for a Shielder and it is wonderfully packed with all sorts of useful information but i have yet to find one like that for my Spartan

From your photo I can se me you have a diesel, therefore you need the common items and Spartan supplement from here:

Hi;  the 70's Fox cvr[w] is supposed to be Alvis built, but oddly there is some controversy about that. I understand that only 296 were built and about 47 got surplussed, some to the States.  More info is always welcome  Newcoregon

The turrets were apparently built by Alvis, but the Fox definitely wasn’t. They were designed by Daimler and the production vehicles were built at the Royal Ordnance Factory Leeds.

Thank you Diana and Jackie, someone did suggest that to me.

Sirhc, I have the item on the left and have seen the item On the right place in a picture..

not sure l see how they actually fit together, or it to the periscope but I am sure I will see one complete and fitted on my travels

The tube on the left fits in the same place as the night sight and allows you to see through the sight using the mirror. The night sight itself can be damaged by daylight. They do turn up occasionally, I’ve had a few.

Indeed. You're looking at £200 for Volume 3 of Warpaint now. It's ridiculous.

I'm amazed Osprey haven't done a series on vehicle markings. It's surely a popular enough subject.

Have you seen volume 2 on Amazon?!
