  1. I do feel quite privileged to own the vehicles that I have, I enjoy preserving things for the next generation.

Part of that ownership is enlightening the next generation in the whys, whats and whens of these vehicles. To see my youngest want to help out and to see his knowledge of the vehicles grow and be able to explain to others at shows is lovely, he's only 8 years old.

My main thought though on this thread is for the vehicles that are kept hidden away, rotting away in many cases without a hope of being preserved. We are custodians, we are those folk as restorers who have the skills and knowledge to bring these vehicles back to life to be able to tell their stories.

HBR supply truck,  Marmon Herrington, 4x2, Tractor at Rutbah, Iraq, 1940.

Rutbah was the only scheduled stop for the well known Nairn Transport Company overland bus service between Baghdad & Damascus Syria. At some point during the war this bus service using MH tractors and very large air conditioned passenger semi trailers made by US company Budd was operated by the RAF. There was a good write up about it is a Wheels & Tracks magazine for those who can remember that fine publication.

Now that looks like one hell of a truck for the period, doesnt the cab look tiny in comparison to the bonnet and wheels?

I'd suggest you post it all here.  Period background information is always good, and if you don't post them they may be lost to history.  It would be good to get the full unit name and title in the post heading too, so it could be found by anyone searching years from now.  It is eighty years since that image was taken, and in another eighty ( scarey thought ) someone may have a specific use for it.

I agree, the thread is an interesting one and should be continued. The vehicles may not all be military but I presume they were also seconded?

    Another WWII photo.

This looks like a Morris Commercial undergoing wading training in the desert. Or may just an excuse to cool down in water.

Canvas around the front to slow water ingress into engine compartment and RAF roundel for aircraft recognition.

Caption on rear of photo is: This one sunk and had to be pushed out.

Before the rain set in today we were able to unload the generating set from the trailer. Whilst applying plusgas everywhere I came across these stampings of the broad arrow with WO. Obviously I have seen this with WD on many occasions but I am sure someone on HMVF can explain the why this was stamped WO instead.

The rocker cover has four Rotherhams of Coventry flip top oilers but only one has the lid so I was concerned the rocker chamber might be full of rust. To my surprise the oil I applied last week seems to have done the job and I was able to loosen the thumb knob that secures the rocker cover.

Although it is obvious that some water has made it in through the three faulty oilers there is still only light corrosion so I am sure the rockers will free off

Very little corrosion by the looks of it, hope they free off easily.

OK Kevin it looks like Wally is right about the no hand signals  I've photo shopped your photo to bring out more detail and below the hand is written R H DRIVE !

The white bar under the 60 denotes GHQ troops and for MEF this could be Motor Battalion

the Camel we have already discussed

The 35 in a circle is a max speed limit sign

The truck reg number is Z457394 this is a Ford WoT2 15cwt GS on contract V4433

Thats brilliant Pete, such a huge amount of info from just a few details.

I did note the R H Drive on the original but as it is not in white didnt associate it with the hand stencil.

  7. Here you go, see what you think?

This could have been taken at one of two places, some of the photos have 'at the beach - Alexandria' on the back then the another couple say 'Jaffa Beach' which I know is in old Tel Aviv.

    Note the white hand stencil.

    Kevin.
