1. Well done Ben.....What state are they in after all these years, Has BCF got a leyland in it?

    they dont belong to me, nephew james has bought bcs 960 the pye douglas with the leyland 400 in, the rear body has been dismantled so that bit needs rebuilding but the rest of it is very good . the george walker douglas is a running chassis with the cab scuttle remaining so needs a bit of work joe has found this one ,perhaps a douglas tractor gathering could be in the pipeline for rushden 2011?:D

  2. You are both right and wrong John, if you look at the Scammell data plate it is a model CR100 (100 ton Crusader). There are various stories about the Amazon name but Wynns CR100 fleet number 627 appeared at the 1977 Commercial Motor Show wearing a Crusader badge not Amazon.

    My brother bought the scammell amazon from the bnfl site at sellafield it was never registered on the road and had never left the site until we collected it . it was badged as an amazon and the handbook drivers manual all stated amazon within the text .it also had cr100 within the handbook, the staff at bnfl would not know anything about it being a cr100 amazon crusader or whatever so the name amazon must have been used by scammell

  3. Does anybody have any recollections of Joe Hunt's scrap yard at Molesworth, UK?

    I think it was closed down in the mid 1990s, and I am looking for people who knew Mr. Hunt (he passed away in 1998) and/or have any recollections or even pictures of the military vehicles he had on his premises.

    Am working on what will most likely turn out to be a wild goose chase, but maybe this thread could generate some useful info. Please PM me if need be.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hanno

    I visited hunts yard several times as my father operated a low loader and moved quite a few motors for joe most of these were jones KL 55 cranes i was always interested in old motors and the yard was a good place to view ex military vehicles . We bought an AEC Mammoth Minor from the yard which my father completely restored this was bought as the yard was being cleared and many motors were being cut up when we recovered the aec the front winch rollers on my scammell pioneer were salvaged at this time ,if only we had lots of money an storage space at the time lots of others could have been saved

  4. Hi every one I'm Dave from Lincoln , I am ex army 1965-1975. I am unfortunately diabled due to reumatoid arthritus so reading these articles and hearing about rebuilds is really extra interesting .Unfortunately I am just learning about this damn computer thing so its a duel pleasure to see as I'm not very mobile and am still very interested in old military vehicles, even if its only on the side lines.........Dave P

    Hello dave i was once a recy mech and my nephew is currently serving as a recy mech with the R A , you served between 65 and 75 you must have some interesting stories ,and which vehicles did you operate real stories of scammells aecs leylands etc are priceless, keep trying with the computer if a chain dragger like me can do it then anyone can cheers ben

  5. Did it have oversized wheels and tyres on it? If so it is a Red Bull promo vehicle which they bought and had converted a couple of years back - It is also running range rover running gear and auto box - It has speakers etc inside it - We have recovered it a few times , they also have a sugga somewhere as well :cheesy:.

    Forgot to mention - Spotted Sunday afternoon going northbound on the M1 just north of Sheffield a very nice Bedford MWD 15cwt along with a number of old buses and Hot rods etc - probably on their way home from a show ??:coffee:

    I was on my way back from london this afternoon travelling on the m1 northbound and was almost overtaken by the redbull sugga , i say almost as it expired along side me at 56 mph then pulled in to the hardshoulder . does the sugga run on modern running gear or is it original ?

  6. Anyone ever used these? WW2 U.S.?

    They are made by trewhella rolfe st smethwick birmingham they are used to shorten a winch rope or sling and are part of the kit that comes with the trewhella monkey winch

  7. A few tips on winch ropes. The biggest cause of wear (and eventual breakage on winch ropes)

    are abrasion, point loading, and sudden shock

    Abrasion causes premature wear on the rope and can be caused by something as simple winching at an angle with front mounted winches on the US militry trucks on which there are no winch rollers.

    Cure line the truck up or use a snatch block to give a chance of direction.

    Even on vehicles fitted with fairlead rollors winching to one side for any distance will cause great wear to rope.

    Cure winch so far then stop pay rope out again and relay evenly across drum before starting to winch again or better still realign truck or use snatch block

    Point loading

    earlier in post somebody put pictures of a fibre rope hooked back on to its self and the damage it did exactly the same happens with wire ropes going around an axle say and hooking back to its self is a definite no. this is easy to spot and easy to cure

    less easy to spot is say winching up an embankment and the rope is cutting through the earth you dont know what you are pulling against. Buried just below the surface could be a rock or an old piece of metal. This will kink or break you rope as sure as doubling back on its self.

    Cure back up with recovery vehicle so rope is clear of earth or throw a sleeper or wooden rollor for rope to pull over

    A point loading that caught me out and put me in hospital. A heavy winching job on a mixer i rigged up and all was within SWL limits. When the lads reconstructed what had happened as the tension was applied the rope had come up from the axle and was resting on a pinch bolt on front hanger this created a point loading in wire snapping it.

    Cure this applies to all recovery jobs dont rig up and then go for it apply some moderate load then stop have a walk round check the run of ropes take loops out of cables put packings in to save chaffing suprising how many times you will save some damage to a radiator or brake line say not mention that expensive rope you have just paid for.

    Shock loading How can that happen My winch only comes in very steady. Easy your mate is stuck down a 45 degree slope you work out you can pull him up embankment with a pull of 8 tons 2 tons less than the winch capacity. You go for it and up it comes nice and steady mate thinks i will give a hand and starts to drive vehicle lurches forward then drops back Suddenly you are imposing a moving load against your equipment maybe 20 tons not good

    Cure get mate out of vehicle and stand along side you if you cant winch it with out his assistance driving then you have not got right kit or your not rigged right.

    Hope you find these tips useful

    no not really

  8. looking to make a 6x6 landrover :idea:does anyone know the drive line of a dodge weapons carrier 6x6 does it drive through the first axle or does it have two propshafts like a gmc ? just looking for ideas

    Your scammell was owned by Michael Watson timber /earthmoving contractor from loddington nr kettering northants he sold it to paul badger from lubenham leics

  10. I was cruising over middle England on google earth and I happened upon a cache of scammells and matadors plus a smattering of land rovers tractors and goodness knows what else.

    sr = Scammell wrecker

    M = matador

    st = Scammell tank trans??

    sa = scammell artic

    101 = land rover 101

    I will not give any info on where I found them, what I will say is I would love to get an invite to wander around the collection.

    Regards rog8811

    The owner of these vehicles lives in a fantasy world of his own with some very strange ideas on vehicle restoration, the Scammell artic was bought by him in immaculate condition it was delivered to his yard then driven across a waterlogged field until it got stuck that was 8 years ago and it still stands in it same spot :nut:. A matador was bought in very good restored condition on driving into the site it slipped off the road onto its side into the hedge it also still lives in this position after 7 years !:cry: i could air my views about owner but will not do so as jack would ban me for life

  11. Where was the Thornycroft Big Ben used np? as it had Redland Aggregates on the side was it a recovery vehicle for them?

    Nice looking Pioneer BTW :D

  12. Went down to Rushden today for the first ever time. There was plenty on offer including a sizable number of military vehicles. Plenty of other things on offer as well and the ground wasn't too wet which I thought it may well have been after the rain overnight.

    Nice to meet both Andy F and Nick (younggun) at a show that I will look to attend in the future. Below are just a few of my pictures from the show, starting off with some of the bigger stuff.

    The Scammell Pioneer belongs to me the Thorneycroft big ben is my nephews and the AEC militant mk3 belongs to my brother ,the GMC with workshop body belongs to a friend it refused to play on monday afternoon so was taken home on suspended tow behind the pioneer :D the traffic build up behind on the way home was amazing !:D:D
