  1. Can you put up a picture of your coupling? There have been a few variations, some seem to have loose rubbers retained by plates, these should be easy to cast. I have cast two couplings for my explorer, it is not as hard as you might think...

My pioneer has the coupling with the rubbers held in by a plate held down with two bolts ,mine failed several years ago i repaired it by cutting sections from a large vee belt which came from a combine its still there and i still use the scammell for the odd recovery job

  2. Thanks very much! Certainly looked a very useful machine.

I got to drive it in the playpen and operate the hiab crane:-D to load up the volvo ballast tractor with all the crap we bought from dorset ,a very usefull machine indeed and big thanks to croc for all his help . the only problem i have now is do i cut my militant down to a four wheeler its already fitted with a hiab but its a long wheelbase militant with the same turning circle as the bismarck .WHAT DO YOU THINK cut it down or leave it as it is ?

  3. Hello All,

What a cracking array of pictures you have on show, but unfortunately the matador i'm searching for isn't there!

I was wondering whether anyone knows the whereabouts of AEC matador used and owned by Henley Transport! It was there only recovery vehicle based in the Kent area, but my grandad (driver) used to go up past London ect with it!

Any pictures, information on this would be highly appreciated!

    Many thanks

The matador you are looking for is now owned by my brother it was bought a couple of years ago from a timber contractor who had bought it from some new age travellers ,it was fitted with a new engine by jack henley some years ago but this had suffered from a cracked cylinder liner all parts have been found for its repair and it will be moved to the workshop soon to start the work, it is still in henley livery complete with recovery crane and will be restored the same hope this helps ben freer

  4. Looking at photos of our TA times with a recently 're-met' colleague, I finally found one of our good old Scammell

    36BC11

Has anyone any info on where it is now? What model it was/is?

All I know is it had been in the T.A. most of it's service career, and someone thought it was built in 1952.

    Would that be right?

I expect the picture could be obtained, and any more, IF there are any, if hopefully the present owner would like copies.

    'Chas.'

36 bc 11 sounds like a Scammell explorer to me
  5. if anyone knows where there are any buried or abanonded tanks, armour, vehicles , etc and they want to retreive them i have heavy winching vehicles and access to low loaders which would handle most heavy armour . i would not be interested in a recovery operation unless full permission by the owner ,land owner ,and local authorities, is granted .

If you have a recovery project but dont have access to the recovery equipment please PM me with the details .

  6. i have a pole trailer which is similar to the one pictured but it is a six wheeler ,it has the same hub caps and is much the same design with the oval holes in the bolsters ,the bolsters are timber on the inside , it came from robert mclean he bought it from fensomes hope to get it out this year . anyone interested in doing a bit of timber hauling loading i will be at rockingham castle steam rally 16 17 july lets get a full house of timber tractors matador douglas foden latil automower unipower fordson pm me for details

  7. travelling on the M11 northbound about 1/2 mile south of north weald airfield there is a large shed where firewood is being stored and cut up ,just past this is a tracked carrier possibly a 432 in white with UN painted on the side hiding in the trees ,i was in a lorry so might be difficult to see from a car . looking on google it it seems to be on a farm near epping, coppersale common ? anyone nearby know whos it is ?

  8. One of the best photos i have seen on this sight. I have a couple of questions to ask about the picture are both WLF the same model or is the one on the left the all power operated eg luffing and slewing i can see the one right is manual. reason i ask is the main winch on the right looks much bigger. one other question is it me or is the soldier on the extreme left an American his hat looks like American issue. Why do i think this is a good snap because i think it captures the atmosphere on a tough recovery job pefectly. The guys are grafting hard but coming to realise they arnt winning some back up has arrived and though tired they going to get the job done.

  9. Can anyone reccommend a parts supplier for Leyland 680 engines? Don't need anything big at moment but waterpump gasket and rubber sealing ring between block and pump are needed.

    Cheers

  10. There was an episode of 'Midsummer Murders' on TV a couple of years ago that featured some old Military Vehicles. I think the plot involved a Military Vehicle enthusiast.

Question is, can anyone remember the episode title?

    Many thanks.

just out of interest the scammell pioneer came from the reme museum

  11. So if you had a 2 axle tractor unit and 3 axle trailer what would the un-laiden weight be roughly, what could it carry ?

What about a 3 axle tractor unit and 3 axle trailer what would the un-laiden weight be roughly and what could it carry ?

Is there a max length for a trailer ?

Is there a max height of load, obviously to miss bridges but what is it ?

road bridges have there height marked if they are under 16 ft so if not marked they must be 16ft or over so 16ft must be the standard height for major road bridges , it is an offence if you dont know your vehicle height which must be clearly displayed in the vehicle . blackwall tunnel has a 15ft 6in clearance southbound and 13 ft clearance northbound so allways check bridge clearances with your load . i drive an 8 wheel grab lorry and a 6 wheel plant lorry so i look out for bridges all the time even when driving my land rover i pull over to the middle of the road and look in the mirror for the crane which is not there ! then look at the puzzeled look of the oncoming motorists who wonder why iam driving down the middle of the road :nut:

  12. I've lost count of the times people ask me why I've taken the driven front axle off the militant (which is 6x4), as militant's were all 6x6 don't you know..

people ask me why ive removed the undriven front axle from my militant and replaced it with a driven one , i didnt but grampian council did when they rebuilt lt for snow plow work 0859 395 6x6 militant ;)

  13. Just being forced to watch One born every minute and have noticed that all the pregnant women seem to have developed some sort of air assisted system. Lots of wooshing hissing and sucking noises when they move. Is it some kind of system to help with the extra weight and is it possible to connect a pregnant woman to disabled lorry in order to release the air brakes. :)

i am also having to suffer this programme sounds similar to the steering system fitted to a explorer :-D

  14. This may be a foolish question too those who know, but here goes.

Can 16.00-20 tyres be fitted to 14.00-20 AEC Matador rims, or is a 16.00-20 tyre much larger?:red:

i once saw a aec militant mk 1 fitted with 1600x20 tyres the front axle used the mk 3 militant wheel rims but the rear axles used the original mk 1 milly rims which are the same as a matador . the militant mk3 rims might have a wider offset so this could give a better lock when fitted on the front .
