Rick W
As the title suggests, my Champ kangaroos in reverse. Is the back axle on its way out?

Rick W
Oh, very funny! When I put the Champ into reverse gear and drive it in reverse it "kangaroos" if you know what I mean. Rather than driving smoothly it jumps as if you are pumping the accelerator up and down. While we are on the subject how do you inspect the oil level in the back axle and what oil goes in it? EP90? I am lacking a maintenance manual for that bit.
Chrisg
There's a rubber bush in the axle support plate (behind the pinion flange) it could be that Or possibly wear in the upper and lower wishbone mounts Back axle oil level the filler plug in on the nearside about halfway up can't rember the spanner size (5/8 or 11/16 af? )
Rick W
Thanks for the info Chris, will check that tomorrow. Where is the data plate located for the original reg number located? (Big Champ learning curve going on here as you can probably guess).
Chrisg
There should be a big brass plate under the bonnet nearside on the bulkhead see link http://www.austinchamp.com/03%20Register/-theregister/Identification/identification.htm'>http://www.austinchamp.com/03%20Register/-theregister/Identification/identification.htm'>http://www.austinchamp.com/03%20Register/-theregister/Identification/identification.htm You could join the owners club for access to on line manuals http://www.austinchamp.com/ Or subscribe to Keiths news letter http://www.austin-champ.co.uk/

Guest catweazle (Banned Member)
filler plug. Check handbrake is not binding, any probs in rear drums can cause this . The shoes get dragged off by the drum especially if there soaked in brake fluid and dust.its not uncommon for the car to try and jump out of reverse especially at speed when you back off,due to excessive end float. ignore the left circle its the plug on the right, have croped it loads of times but it still comes up ,i hate computors.
