Hello to anybody who saw the 'WASP'

Recommended Posts

Hello my real name is Pete I am 58.. A work mate once called me petrov and it stuck:undecided:

I served in the army in the 70's as a 16/5th Lancer and became a driver / mech . And reached the dizzy height of lance corporal

from 1977-1979 I was posted to chertsey as a test driver at the light tank division (CVRT's)

i was lucky enough to look after the WASP (as seen in some threads on this site) while I was posted there as civilians were not allowed to drive it, something to do with insurance ..... More likely soldiers were replaceable :D

It's life as a track test bed was over before I arrived at chertsey it was only used on demonstration and open days and boy it was fast.. When ever I took it onto the test track I had to have a escort vehicle which I could lose with ease on the main straight of the track .. I would NOT be exaggerating to say it could have done 90-100mph ...

towards the end of my 2 year posting on a demo / open day I almost had a track loss and called the demo off and limped off the skid pan . On inspection the rear wheel (track tensioner) drivers side, the outer wheel had been sheered off by the track but I lucky the track remained on just being held by the inner wheel.

It was lifted back to the CVRT hanger :embarrassed: The management deemed it too unsafe and I was told it was mothballed

Since leaving the army in mid 1980 I've been a hgv1 driver for 8 years and since January 1988 I have been with BT now openreach as a underground cable repair engineer.

I'm married to Julie with 3 daughters 4 grandchildren .

i am so pleased I've found this site

regards to all

Dear Petrov,

Welcome to the forum, we love hearing tales from folks like yourself who actually did things with the vehicles we now are custodians of.

The WASP i'm not it immediately familiar with which vehicle you are referring to but I think it was a Carlos Fandango souped up CVR(T), was it by chance the yellow greenhouse version?

We all love pictures

I have plenty of boxes to sit on and listen to your exploits
