gritineye
This box is 6"x5"x2" and is divided into 4 compartments with felt. It has "CASES 4 VALVE No 3 ZA9817" stencilled on the lid.

fv1609
I think it would be a 18 Set specifically. Although ATP4 (Army Transmitting Pentode No.4) & ARP12 (Army Receiving Pentode No.12) were used in the 38 Set. ARP12 was quite versatile & was also used in Mine Detector No.3 (Polish)
gritineye
Thanks for those replies chaps, I picked this up many years ago with a DTI gauge in it, I was vaguely thinking of using it for another purpose which would involve removing the lining and drilling a small hole in it....... But I thought I should find out how rare it was first.
woa2
The box is the spare valves box for the wartime 38 set mk2, and would be carried in the side pack with the junction box and battery (150 & 3 volt). They either had rubber inerts or felt, as yours has - the rubber doesn't last. The 38 set was the most common set issued to the Army in WW2. The box should have a pice of paper stuck to the lid, but this is usually missing. The box contains a replacement valves, also spare fuses. fv1609
Robert I think you will find one of the valves is an AR8, this was used in the 18 Set but not in the 38 Set. The 38 Set used 4 x ARP12 & 1 x ATP4. There is a picture of the ZA9817 box on here: http://www.wftw.nl/gallery/ws18.html
