  1. Hi Chris

Welcome and greeting from Scotland too! Are you anywhere near Dunfermline, I have a 43 Ford GPW in desert livery of LRDG, and part own a Chevy wrecker. Our group is about to rebuild a Ford 1 1/2 ton truck as well - we run out and about the area from time to time and meet at our workshop if you are in the area drop me a line and call in for a chat- or a convoy run or two.

There is a 40s night and vehicles display on sat 7th Nov at Dunfermline British Legion -should be a good night and in period dress too.

If you fancy a trip to the desert see our website below likewise the SMVG would be glad to see you as a member too.

    Regards

  2. What makes me laugh about pics like that is that all their training and all that doesn't make them look more masculine, it makes them look more feminine and more attractive! Anyone agree with me?

Depends how long you have been away and how you perceive the different degrees of beauty, but these beauties are definitely in the no bagger region lol

  3. very nice mate! I know afew fellow overhere in NZ that would love to get their dirty hands on that gear :P good luck on the research :)

Don't sell yourself short mate, there is a lot of interest worldwide with LRDG items and a competitive market. The Kiwis were the first LRP which became the LRDG but very soon after the UK Guards then UK Yeomanry provided troops for the LRDG and then the Rhodesians. A lot of people thought it was only NZ and will only sell stuff to them etc but in reality a REME soldier would have been part of the Light Repair Service (LRS) as part of the LRDG (as were Royal Signallers etc) so your provenance looks more likely to be British than Kiwi. There are a lot of genuine collectors here too! Not that you are selling though but just for future info, of course.

  4. RE:

I understand one of the Army Paratroops froze at the exit and refused to jump. As it wasn't a Military exercise but a film job, there was doubt as to whether he was to be charged or not. Anyone know the outcome?

I never physically witnessed this but heard about it, as you say it was a film but it was treated as a mil jump, using mil chutes, RAF PJIs, safety Officers etc and we were given the Green Light Warning before any jump. As an APJI with lots of experience it was just another set of jumps. The disconcerting thing was that when you stood in the door you could see to your left and slightly below you the tail plane and it had the effect of making you think as you left the sill you were going to wrap yourself round it. In reality you dropped well below it and the chute slid over it as you descended. In C130s and modern jump planes the tail ishigh up and you never see it so no psychological barrier.

I guess that the para who refused should have been, medically checked and if not injured, 252'd and disciplinary action taken etc, but I assume it was treated locally at platoon/ coy comd level and he was filled in by the CSM lol. It takes a lot more courage to refuse than jump as the peer pressure and fallout is immeasureable. Just my twopence worth, after all it was party time being looked after by a film company and their beer tokens

  5. Seems about right as I said I remembered about 20. There were definitely non flyers and mockups etc. I think the shots with the lines of daks etc was manipulated by trickery, smoke and mirrors etc lol

Great times and memories, we also played the zulu extras in the Monty Python Meaning of Life after the real West Indians went on strike after complaining it was too cold -well it was filmed just outside Glasgow but that's another story

  6. Only 11? I seem to remember more but some may have been mock ups as there was a lot on ground for longer shots etc. I remember Sth African Dakotas too but not sure if it was during film or just after as we did some more shots for a publicity film too

  7. Cannot remember the exact amount but about 20 or so from around the world as well as a few hercules(C130) and transaals(C160) to provide paratroopers in the sky at the same time but obviously out of shot.

I had privilege of being one of the paras who made up the extras and did all the jumps during the films. 1 Para and some from other Bns (incl TA Bns) made up the main contingent of jumpers as well as some from other allied armies. It looked impressive from the ground and busy as hell in the sky exiting from the Dakota with others all around you doing same - modern jumps don't get the quantity of people or aircraft as during war and they now tend to come in on stream (one behind other) and not in formation nowadays.

  8. You just reminded me of the why's of how I and some friends lost track of a week back in the late Seventies - with two Soviet majors - females who were as ggod as any in the Soviet beauty contest. They produced some home brewed vodka and we "purloined" some spirits from A. N. Other location and we settled down one sat night for a party. The following Friday we sort of came to with a jolt and realized we were all AWOL.. That took some sorting out afterwards. Worth it though!! :red: :red:

so you came across the KGBs undercover weapon in time of war- send in loads of beauties with vodka to all the barracks in germany and drink into oblivion, when we all waken up it is a week later and under a new regime without a drop of blood spilled.

  9. ooops sorry people getting upset, will change tack now to interesting archive photos showing military equipment and vehicles of miscellaneous nature being operated by the fairer sex, so often overlooked in time of conflict. Not only MVs but aircraft, civvy bus and weapons -so doesn't really sit anywhere else on forum.

Hoping some viewers can enlighten us on the eqpt etc

  11. LOL:cool2: I volunteered to do their medical checks but was beaten by about 40 others. Quite a skill marching in high heels and mini skirts and these girls are ALL beautiful and not a munter amongst them. Unlike 3 Para Mortars, in the late 70s, who just wore dresses and heels when off duty hehe. Notice the cameraman on the floor getting the compulsory up the skirt shots for Beaver Magazine

  12. Just returned, last week, from Sennelager and Fallingbostel trg areas on annual exercise and it is all portaloos with stinking inners, first person to use it and break the crust has to hold breath and swat 1000s of bluebottles that are trying to escape through the hole you are sitting upon. Bring back shovel recces any day

  13. Shaky sights and trembling hands, check fire -some photos of uber attractive soldiers- especially the ukrainians

Anyone got any more from their travels? Lol we don't always inspect equipment sometimes it is the soldier too hehe

In order Spain, Ukraine Dress uniform, RMP UK, France x 2, Sweden and Ukraine combat clad missy......

  14. I was issued OGs with the double buckles same as desert and KD shorts/Trousers (when in Para Regt) in the early 70s and If I remember correctly were dated late 50s, and were they not used in Suez as I remember early photos with paras wearing them. They were popular in NI as they didn't melt same as the OG lightweights.
