  1. Hey Joe it must make you mad knowing every single one of them was built over that side of the Atlantic :) .and.....how many were made??? Jeeeez! .... They do appear for sale here in the UK relatively regularly but they are always up around the £300,000 ..£s !! :) whether anyone is actually getting that sort of money though is a matter that some of the tank boys on here may be able to comment on :)

I did read somewhere on the 'unit cost' of a Sherman at the height of their production and as I remember ..I think it was about $30,000 dollars ??.. ...I guess they weren't 'cheap' back then when you consider what wages were in 1945 ?? . :)

Going off thread a little I know and I apologise in advance .........

..........have you ever seen the article in I think the magazine is called 'Home Mechanics' about a scrap dealer fella up New York way who bought about 1500 (?) of them in one go after the war? they were brand new and had only traveled as far as a Military arsenal where they had sat unused because the war had ended as they were built.....I think he bought them in about 1950 (?) and once the deal was sealed he was responsible for moving them pronto off Government property ..he managed to do it and even advertised for ex Armoured US Army Mechanics and drivers to come and have a job working for him....anyways..sorry to digress a bit but it's a cracking read......someone on here may be able to find a link to the story for you :) oh...I think..not sure...but I think his 'unit cost' was about $3000 each :) EDIT: sorry !! totally wrong ! his unit cost was about ..wait for it...$600 each !!!!

EDIT: OK..after a little digging ...the magazine was called 'Popular Mechanics' and the issue he was featured in was from 1960 so ..a little later than I suggested..here's a link ! :) oh and it was 536 Shermans he bought apparently :)

I don't get mad,a lot of armour is over in Europe and deserves to be where they fought at...You people over there went thru hell during the war and I can only hope the new generations post WW2 will appreciate what you all went thru...We all have a common bond of keeping history alive thru our hobby...

I know all the people I ever talked to said once they fought in WW2 and came home they never really wanted to see that stuff again.....I wonder how many are still here in someone's buildings...Over here they are constantly finding so called barn finds of 60 year old plus cars that were simply put away...

I say keep up the hobby and educate people how important it is...Vote those idiot politicians out of office...

Popular Mechanics is a great read but never heard about the tanks..

  2. when i'm posting the site times me out and losses what i write.... how do i stop this??? also how do you easily post pics???

Click on REPLY TO THREAD then scroll down a little and click on MANAGE ATTACHMENTS then in upper right corner click on ADD FILES then in upper corner click on SELECT FILES...Then just take your time and select a photo or two (it will take about 1 minute for each photo to upload) and a few more steps that you'll be able to figure out....Write all this down then it's easier to remember...

  3. Does not do our cause any good when our preserved vehicles are used in this manner, just bad publicity for all of us.

I live in the USA and we have similar problems at times with government...I think just the opposite that it's about time people learn and be more understanding and respectful about people in general...The tank is a reminder of the many wars that we have all been thru in an attempt to preserve our individual rights...The owner of the tank was respectful in the way he was protesting...

People all over have had enough of stupid politicians....

I wish the people the very best in a fair outcome to them...

  4. after reading the manuel dissasembled the bevel box completly to find that the bevel gear ( referred to as a bevel wheel ?) seems to be broken, freely turns instead of a locked assembly...does anyone out there know its part number? or where i might vind one? joe in albany
    Joe,

I am looking in my parts catalogue at the bevel box and cannot with certainty give you the right part number without seeing the part...Perhaps you can post up a picture of it and another member here can help....

Also since you are a Ferret owner you absolutely will need the 4 manuals for it...The only place in the USA that I know of that sells the manuals is www.khakicorpsimports.com ...Call him and order them...It usually takes a few days to get an answer as he is a small company and greatly overworked...

Wish I could help more but I am very limited in my mechanical ability....

    The very best to you...

    Joe in Illinois

  5. I don't know who painted the Lynx but I'll bet it was politically correct at the time.

Here's another in-service pic of 506. Front left.

    Duffy,

I wonder where my 1954 Canadian Army Ferret MK1 54-82586 is in that picture..UNEF 1216...Still looking for any information about mine..I sure would like to honor any crewman...

I just put this video together to show what I started with and where I am up too with this Ferret. Im now building a bigger shed, and once that is done, I will replace the motor with the one Ive just built, give it a respray and tidy it up, then I think I will be pretty close to finished. To give you some idea of what the internals were like, just picture nothing but rust.

    Regards, Tim

You sure have been working...Hope someone on here can help you with the timing issue...

Here is a photo taken in a Blackhawk. Im the guy with the Kbar in my mouth, while Shannon McAlaney behind me, with the big smile, unfortunately never made it back. He was killed on the 2nd of April 1993 in the Market Area in down town Biadoa. RIP. The importance of Military Vehicle restoration is important so that tangible reminders of past conflicts can connect later generations with the sacrifices that were made by guys like Shannon. We should never forget that.

I feel the same way Tim about my Ferret...I have been looking about 14 months now for the past crew or any history of pictures of my 1954 Canadian Army Ferret MK1...54-82586...I would like to honor anyone that served with it...Once I find the history i will paint it in the colors of it in the 50's...I hope some day to show it at car shows here in the USA and have an information board by it so all may see about it's history...

  8. Im damn pleased to be back too. Although, Im sure my unhealthy obsession with military vehicle restoration has developed as a result of this deployment. Check out this youtube video a put together with a few of the photos that I took over there. I might interest you.

Also have a look at this Saracen that I restored as a Marijuana prevention program a few years ago.

Outstanding Tim...Thank you once again for sharing the amazing videos....Is your life settling down a bit now ?

  9. . Greetings All,

The museum association I belong to has a Ferret with gear box isuesI think we've found the issue - we took the cover plate off the top of the gear-box (the one over the transmission brake bands), and discovered that in addition to a fluid change being required, the gear-box has been stuck in 4th gear, and probably for some time at that !!

The gear-selector lever will move easily enough, as will the transfer-case lever on the left side, but we can't get the vehicle into a lower gear. We'll be investigating further on Saturday. One of the more mechanically trained that myself has recommended that we take the cover plate off on the right hand side (with the gear-selector lever), and see what's going on inside the gear-box (if we can get it off). We're thinking that someone else has done that with the vehicle still in gear when they removed the cover plate, and couldn't get it out of gear after that, and replaced the cover and left things that way).

Any idea what oil or fluid people are putting in Ferret gear-boxes today? We have "OMD80" stencilled on the gear-box cover plate, which translates into 30wt oil. Your thoughts?

    Cheers,

Gear box same as engine oil 30 wt detergent...Transfer case EP90-GL4 not GL5 additive as it can cause harm to the bronze inside...

  10. Well, no progress to report today. I tried a bent welding rod, but was unable to pull the sun gear. I only had one rod available so am now going to get a second one and see if I can get it to move when pulling from two rather than one position.

I am wondering if a good soaking in a bucket filled with penetrating oil for a week would loosed up that rust....

I hope the more knowledgeable mechanics will come on with ideas for this problem...
