  1. After the engine build, I put a brand spanking new carby on today, fired it up and took it for her maiden spin around the block. It ran awesome. Plenty of grunt and just wanted to belt down the road. Ive got a few little loose ends to clean up and then go for the road worthy and rego.

I would love to know if anyone has a turret lid for a Mk 1/2. Thats the fix turret with the folding lid. If not, I will have to make one, but if someone had one, then maybe we could do a deal.

I will post some video when I take it out next. I tasked my teen age daughter to film it driving down the street. Seriously the worst footage Ive ever seen. She didnt even bother to come outside, so the camera kept focusing on the window screen. Im sure if Justin Beiber was hanging his girlie head out of the turret, I would have someting to post on here.

Tim good to see you posting again and all is well.....Yes,share a video...Will be looking forward to it...Wish I had some of your warm weather here in South Dakota USA it is currently 13 F above zero !!!!! Keep up the great work...

  2. it is all registed with the DVLA now and I am in the middle of an extensive restoration .I have got the engine running new distributor cap, plugs leads condenser, manufactured exhaust and manifold brakes sorted all new front and rear copper pipes cylinders stripped and free internals ,stripped out fuel tank cleaned and now free of gum now to stating on the electrics and body + re manufactured bins and cast a data plate for this new one . Winter project. thanks for advice for registration

I hope all is going well with your restoration.....It is always exciting to see another Ferret owner take such interest...the very best to you....

  3. Richard, no dice. It doesn't matter if the gear change pedal is up or down in neutral, the bevel gear teeth clashing is too severe to attempt selecting forward or reverse, gently, firmly, or anywhere in between.

I did some experimenting, as the the teeth clashing of the bevel gears in the transfer case with the gearbox in neutral has a distinctive frequency. I selected and engaged each gear in turn and gently pushed the forward/reverse lever forward until the teeth just clashed. In first, the clashing is very slow and forward can be engaged easily with a firm push. In 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, the clashing frequency gets progressively faster as you would expect. The clashing frequency in neutral most closely matches the clashing in 4th, so I suspect the 4th gear band is binding on the drum a bit, preventing the gearbox output shaft from coasting down to a standstill. I need to read up on the band adjustment and give it a try.

See my above post about engine idle rpm being too high...

  4. on our sary you cant change it very easily at all from reverse to forward but you are right very smartly and very quickly but I find if your moving it into or out of gear it helps too..son has it sorted the best...

Did you check engine idle rpm ? It is suppose to be at lowest idle when shifting forward or reverse....Manual calls for 300 to 400 rpm....I have mine at 500 rpm...

  5. Thanks for the info, joe. 16 oz is one US pint, right? The fluid coupling capacity is about 12 US pints so my estimate of getting 25% out in one suck seems to be way off. Oh well, I'll give it a try anyway.

    Yes 16 ounces is 1 us pint...2 pints = 1 quart..

  6. Just to close the loop on this one, there are large holes in both the gearbox bellhousing and the gearbox-to-engine adapter at the 6 o'clock position, so oil draining out of the flywheel plug will flow through those holes down into the hull. Unfortunately, the holes are completely inaccessible as they are well aft of the gearbox drain access in the hull, so I can't catch the drainage - very messy. So that's out.

I can get stiff 1/4" tubing far enough down into the flywheel to suck out maybe a quarter of the oil. So 3 sucks and refills will dilute better than 50%. I think I'll try that.

I tried to vacuum my fluid flywheel oil out with a 12 volt suction oil pump I have...Like Richard stated the vanes will stop the tubing from going low...I was able to get out about 16 ounces of oil on first try.....

  7. The center wheels were put on a air lift system to allow the vehicle to make really tight turns. Driving down the road they can be lowered with the flick of a switch and add stability, but are not powered.

    Really a great job..Beautiful...

  8. Excellent Robin..I know you are always looking for anything on the Canadian Ferret and a great find you have....I hope you and your friend someday can produce a small book of all your great finds....Every little bit helps to put the puzzle together.

I am always hoping that old Canadian Army Soldiers that worked and crewed one of the 124 Ferrets will come on here or on the Ferret Appreciation forum on Facebook and talk of their experiences and share their photos but it is a very rare occurrence indeed for that to happen...

I am still looking for any information or pictures on my Canadian Army 1954 Ferret MK1 54-82586 that was one of the 29 in UNEF (possible UNEF 1216....

    Keep up the good work...

  9. Well logically no one would eliminate that spring as they would have to dismantle the rod inside the filter canister.....All I remember doing is slipping off the filter off that about 12 inch long rod and putting the new filter on....I just don't see how that spring can possibly hold up that new cartridge filter #432 which is about 1 inch shorter than the old style original diaper type filter..It is clearly about 1 inch from the top.........Just my opinion I don't think switching from an old style filter to the new cartridge drop in filter is a good idea without changing something to correct it...

  10. There should be a spring holding the filter against the top of the housing (if it's been correctly assembled!)

    Andy

Well it very well may be missing..I'll take it apart and check it...Thank you for the valuable advice...I'll let you know.....

Andy the User Handbook pg.57 shows what you are talking about in the figure parts #9,10,11,12....Also it is showing a CANISTER type filter......My 1954 Ferret came with the Diaper/Blanket type of oil filter....Did those original types have this spring also or just the shorter canister types ?

    thank you Sir

  11. The length isn't necessarily a reflection of the filter's effectiveness. The 432 may well be made of a considerably more efficient filtration medium, or because of the way it's designed it might present as much surface area, or more, to the oil as the longer original.

It's also likely that your Ferret in preservation will be better looked after, get oil changes more frequently and be used considerably more gently than in service, all of which would make filtration much less critical.

Sean being that the 432 filter is 1 inch shorter in length than the diaper /blanket type when the element is placed in the filter container it sits on the bottom of the container and it just seems to me that doing so the oil coming in from the engine could bypass over the top and go back out the outlet pipe to the engine unfiltered......

That's what I am really wondering about....I'm not a good mechanic so I am trying to figure this out..Thanks...

  12. Just been announced Ukraine are about to get seventy five or so SAXON's. (What do we send to them we don't like!)

I think they are the type of people like some on here that can fix anything........Youtube has some great videos check on there for ARMY TANKS STUCK IN MUD

  13. The manual states to wash it in petrol, but I like a new filter with new oil. They aren't cheap though.

    Cheers,

    Terry

I'm with you Terry.I did have the privilege of speaking with a couple old REME guys and they swear by the old method they said use it and clean it....I'm not considered a rich person but will put a new filter on myself...All depends what people believe in...Like I said earlier the Crossland #432 is about 1 inch shorter than the diaper type....I would think that by it being that much shorter when the oil comes in it won't filter as well as going thru the longer diaper one that was originally made for it...

    Anyone else with opinions ?

I just bought my original style oil filters from Bannisters..
