  1. Ok folks,

     

    my over active brain has come up with a thought, how much does the chassis and rear tub of a 109" weigh?

     

    Had a thought whilst driving my bus yeaterday( got to do summat to relieve the bordom!!!), buy a 109" mot failure, take everything from the front to the rear tub out (engine,gearbox, front axle, seats bulkhead etc) and turn the rest into a trailer, and kit the back out with the full complement of radios to display with the 9x9 command tent.

     

    What does the collective brain think?

    You are not allowed under current regulations to build trailers out of "Car" parts. The brakes do not meet current standards for trailers. If you do this, legally, you will have to ditch the back plates and fit proper trailer brake parts.

    I do wish it was possible to get the reg of the Eager Beaver, but its just not possible! I can't rule it out as being my one!

    The nuclear artillery that gets me was called the Davy Crockett a nuclear mortar bomb fitted on a 155mm recoiless gun firing a weapon with a yeld of upto 250tons equiv. out to a max range of 4,000metres. :nut: it was carried in a M113 personel carrier

  4. The originality brigade then come in force to point out the original bulb was 28V and the replacement, like all modern bulbs is only 24v.

     

    This would lead into a technical discussion as to whether to reset the voltage cut out coil, how it can be done and whether the same AVO previously mentioned would be accurate enough to reset the cutout.

    probably someone (not me) would sthen ay it is the wrong wattage and doesn't comply with lighting regs, closely followed by three people asking whether it has to comply with current lighting regs or regs that were in place when the truck was built.

    Followed by an in depth discussion by three members as to who made the original bulb, and whether it wouldn't be better to try and find a NOS bulb.

  13. I for one fully understood what Stuart was saying. The standardised military waterproof dashboard was fitted to some Explorer contracts as fitted to Champ, Humber 1 Ton, Martian ect. These had a matching sender bulb, which is what he is after.

    Surely with a capillary sender unit the bulb, capillary and gauge are one unit, they are filled and sealed. If you only have the gauge in a dash, you cannot connect a capillary tube and bulb to it. Or am I missing something. This is what I have on the Scammell in my shed, and on my spare engine.

     

    With an electrical temperature gauge you need a thermister, Temperature dependant resistor or similar to connect to it via an electrical cable, and then you can change the sender but keep the gauge. If you have a fluid or vapour filled bulb, in is connected to the gauge at manufacture and cannot be replaced independently of the gauge.

     

    Talk of a "bulb" indicates use of such a system.

    A vehicle is judged by current C and U regs. These contain exemptions for vehicles built before particular dates. The responsibility of every vehicle owner, before taking it out on the road, is to ensure that his vehicle complies with all the C and U regs as they apply on that particular day. At present all vehicles used on the road have to comply either with Road Vehicles (construction and Use) Regulations 1985 ( or current STGO regs)

    (likewise current Lighting regs must be adhered to, and again these will state age of vehicle to which they apply.) Currently all vehicles on the road must comply with Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989.
