  1. As you might have discovered banging on the threaded end results in mushrooming that end. A technique I have successfully used on heat set rivets is to drill down the centre, more than half way. Insert a drift into the hole and hit that, the theory being that you are pulling the bolt out rather than pushing.

Great minds think alike ! I did exactly as you suggested and it worked ! Also needed the heat though . The Kookaburras were laughing at me while I was working at it .

  2. I have got the chassis mostly stripped down but there are always a few stuck bolts , this one is a pain - the bolt through the front main spring hanger casting is jammed , heating with the oxy has no effect on it.

Been so hot here the past week , makes working outside a real drag . Sunburn is a ever present hazard. My shed is currently full of old lathes and milling machines, another weakness of mine - among them I have a wartime Parkson No. 1 universal mill with the "austerity finish" Ministry of Supply badge on it.

  3. Looking great .

Did you have the 7/8" timber boards milled somewhere ?

I guess that each of the 15cwt manufacturers made their own GS bodies to a common plan. I have one original wooden side GS body section from a Morris CS8 body , the same style of cast brass tag was used .

  4. Paint technology back then was light years away from what we have today . The paint manufacturers supplying to the armed services would have used the cheapest formulas , large amounts were the order of the day . Get em out the factory doors and if they last for 6 months of service life, that is a blessing.

  5. I was at the local library a few years ago when a guy came in and asked the librarian to search for anything re: a Mossie crash here in East Gippsland in the early 1950's , the chap said the pilot was his friend . We found the accident report and other details emerged with two fatalities reported. The hole in the ground is still visible today . It was a familiarization flight for a new pilot with the instructor . One of the Australian made Mosquitos by de Havilland in NSW .

  6. When it comes time to work on your motor, be very careful when removing the coolant side cover. The old bolts are extremely fragile and heads snap off if you look at them too harshly . I t may be feasible to drill out the remains and tap to the next size up. BTW the bolts are 6mm nominal OD . You do know that these engines have metric threads in them ????

  7. Mario,

OK thanks for the king pin info . I think the CV 11/40 is a civilian model truck , it first appeared in late 1937 or 38 along with the other CV range of trucks . I have the Harry Edwards book here somewhere , I will check that . And, I thought the CS8 king pin has a straight pin , not stepped ? The 8 cwt PU does use a stepped king pin .

Yes I would like the contact details for John Walker .

  8. The Australian pilot was played by John Meillon AKA Flight Lt. Gillibrand.

In 1984 I was working on a telemovie film set ( The Dunera Boys ) where John Meillon was working. He looked permanently drunk, with a red face and big red nose. He must have drunk the local pub dry. He eventually died from Liver Cirrhosis. Also on the set were Warren Mitchell AKA Alf Garnett and Bob Hoskins the short Cockney actor .

Another good movie with plenty of Mossie flying action is THE PURPLE PLAIN with Gregory Peck as a Pilot in Burma . Excellent scenes of the airstrip in the jungle .

  9. Hello Mike I did not know about that panel when you

Can some measurements pls thanks always

I just moved the chassis over to the driveway today. I am removing the engine and axles and taking the chassis to be sandblasted . I will measure the panel for you when I remove it . There is also a panel on the passenger side , this panel is shaped to go around the oil filter .

BTW I noticed the front axle wheel track or width is quite a bit wider that the rear axle track . I wonder why the designers or the WD did that ?

  10. As one of the fruitcakes on this show, can you provide more detail on what you actually mean by this diagnosis? Ive been called a lot of things, but this is a first for me. Its called entertainment. Bruce is keen to keep the dialogue free flowing and have a laugh. If I was to look coldly into the camera and state 'This is a Ferret, there are many like it, but this one is mine' 'This is a saracen, there are many like it, but this one is mine' ect ect, would get rather boring. Adding a bit of colour and fruitcakeness makes it more interesting.

Shooting up an old caravan with a machine gun ! Is that what the military vehicle restoring fraternity is about ! The more intelligent members of the public see that kind of behaviour as reckless and puerile to say the least. Some viewers of that show are naive enough to get the impression that we MV restorers are shooting up caravans at MV shows and that we are gun crazy .
