Does anybody have any contacts at Castlemartin, need some bits and pieces for The Yeomanry Volunteers.

Hi Martin, thanks for that.
On the gunners side, you have an IB3 and nothing where I have my IB2 so i guess that explains one missing item.
I noticed you have this box:

What is it?
On the gunners side it looks pretty much the same except there might be two ARFAT's making three altogether???
this is the ECC BOX.

We got rid of our Saracens just prior to conversion from Larkspur to Clansman, so doubt if any had Clansmann fitted.

I can remember after one of my many breakdowns in Germany, and after the fitters had worked on my Scorpion, we had similar trouble, after restripping the vehicle, the fitter hadn't connected the same cut off connection.

No you were not. Well, by comparison with me, obviously. bags of style, panache, flair and élan though. Again, obviously.

Looks like a Foot Guards Regiment by the badge on the veh hull.
-
Nice pic, dont think they are from the Argyll's though! Appear to be wearing Hussars Badges & the front officer is wearing one of thier disticntive 'Tent' hats!.......
Argyll's tended to wear the chip bag, with red & White diced band. & twin swallow tails at the rear!
Looks Like Queens Royal Irish Hussars to me.
The regiment moved to Aden in 1961, reroling as an armoured reconnaissance regiment and after serving there against insurgents for almost a year, sailed on the SS Oxfordshire to the newly-independent nation of Malaysia. It was based in Ipoh, Malaysia from October 1962, and saw limited action against Indonesian insurgents, seeing service in Brunei and Sarawak on jungle operations during the Indonesian confrontation, and in Singapore as part of the Internal Security Forces.

The cap badge in Bazz's series of pictures is 15th/19th The King's Royal Hussars from our tour 1974-1976 when we were Northern Ireland Armoured Car Regiment, based in Omagh and with responsibility (according to AN ANALYSIS OF MILITARY OPERATIONS IN NORTHERN IRELAND, foreword by General Sir Mike Jackson GCB CBE DSO ADC Gen http://w1.publicaddress.net/assets/upload/224146/-1650345631/opbanner.pdf ) for some 53% of the border with the republic. Some of the best and most formative days of my life.
And wasn't I good looking then.

A good follow on read to "Tankies" would be "By Tank into Normandy" by Stuart Hills. He recounts his experience in the Sherwood Rangers as they trained on the Sherman DD tanks ( A very interesting first hand experience) then landed on D Day or in Stuart's case escaped from his DD tank as it sank and spent D Day on a raft just off shore. Back to Normandy with a fresh tank then fighting all the way through to VE day in Germany.
While he includes the horror and personal tragedy of war in his book, what struck me about Stuart's experience was the "Tank broken, here's another one from stores" the logistics described were truly amazing! He also describes small and large scale tank on tank battles.
I've read and reread this book, absolutely brilliant.

Thanks for getting back to me, perhaps I wasn't very clear in what Info I was after. I know what types of rounds that where avialable for a Saladin, I was just wondering what the numbers were that were carried on board, i.e. 10 x H.E, 5 x Smoke etc etc ?.
Dan.
like most things, it depended on the mission and what your potential targets were.

Hi Jon,
Thanks for that. I thought that might be where they came from, but couldn't find any pictures. I suppose somebody kept the gas plug as a spare so they could swap it and clean it later. Thanks again.
Jochen.
We used to have a couple of spare ones per gun. We removed the good one from the barrel prior to firing and use the spare ones, the good one was replaced after firing and the barrel had been cleaned, and the spare plugs kept and cleaned when time was available. We used the soak the spare plugs on cola, very good for removing the carbon, but not very good for the surface and fish of the plug, that's why we only used the spare plugs.

HTH = Hopes this helps.
Neil A = Alien backwards
I always knew you were backwards

I agree with Alien, we mainly wore the appropriate headset, whether Larkspur/Clansman with ferrets, we did get issued the RAC pattern steel helmet, but I can say I never saw them ever been worn whilst crewing the vehs.

Bazz's memory has had a senior moment. We had six troops of four times Mark 2 plus the Mark 1 for 29C. We had six troops per squadron in NI (74-76) and retained five sabre troops plus a GW Ferret troop in tidworth so that we didn't have to heave the orbat up between the three tours.
This particular car never crossed my path, but Bazz and I were in Aliwal Bks, Tidworth in 1976-7 (with an UNFICYP tour in the middle) while our colleagues 3RTR were next door but one in Bhurtpore.
Alien, I do apologise for my senior moment, I was nearly right.

Another question, does anyone know how many ferrets served in cyprus?
There was a Sqn based at Nicosia, The Force Reserve Sqn, so called as the word reconnaissance could not be used as the Turks don't like the word recce. something to do with the connotations with spying. As far as remember there was five tps of 4 mk 2s and a mk 1 for the SSM
There was also a mixed Sqn at Episkopi, of Ferrets, Saladins and some Saracens. numbers I can't remember
I at times in my military career served in both units.

I'm an ex serviceman with a number of Decorations and Awards, I only wear them for "formal gatherings/parades etc. I was contemplating joining a re-enacting group, but at 55 and overweight decided that I would look a prat. At our local Remembrance Parade last year there was a number of locals (non ex forces) wearing uniforms and awards etc that they were not entitled to. A friend of mine in the local constabulary who is ex RMP, reminded those people, that it is still an offence to wear rank and awards you are not entitled to. To go on a bit more, why when they are a certain age and size must re enactors however well dressed, must be UK/Us Para's, or dressed as officers etc when it would more appropriate to be "other" Corps/Regt.
