They look like Army - Royal Signals.  Was your grandfather-in-law R Signals?  Perhaps RAF support communications - that looks like an aircraft symbol on the white & blue R Signals AOS sign on the driver's side of the windscreen.  Something like this?

AN AIR FORMATION SIGNALS PATCH (2ND PATTERN) in General

Yes he was, Royal Signals attached to the RAF

I wasn’t sure if he was driving an Army Jeep or RAF Jeep.

The hull number on the non-uparmoured Saracens was stamped on a small steel strip which was welded  on to the hull above the doors, it appears when uparmoured the numbered tag was removed in order to fit the extra armour, it was probably assumed at the time to be unnecessary as the data plate inside gave all the information. The army always used their registration number as identification.

    regards, Richard

Thanks for the info Richard, I assume the grind marks on the back are where the tag was removed.

  3. Hi everyone

Does anybody have a picture of the hull number and exact location on a Saracen? I’ve looked back through and old thread but the only picture I found was poor quality and didn’t really expand on the location, the Saracen is an up armoured mk5, we were told the hull number is above the rear doors and stamped in the escape hatches, the hatch numbers we have found but would like to find the hull number, we have cut the armour above the rear doors but no number, any help would be appreciated.

It's funny with naming our vehicles...a couple of our cars have names but none of the lorries...but, strangely my Wife said this morning out of the blue 'I wonder if the kids should name the lorries?'...

Pretty much every vehicle in our MVT club is named and painted on apart from a couple of Jeeps

As a new member, having joined with a genuine need for advice, but having now found that advice on an electronics website, I feel totally unwelcome, having not had one reply on introductions or the British vehicles category I’m not sure what to think.

Sorry you haven’t felt welcome, I can only assume no one was able to answer your question at the time of posting, personally I only tend to view the recently updated topics that appear on the screen, I can only assume yours just got missed.

I'm on a few FB groups too, its another good source of information. But, I feel on FB there are a lot of armchair experts who can quite easily offend. When we finished our truck last summer some photos of it were posted on FB, not by us but it was nice to get he exposure.

Trouble is, then we started getting comments about how we'd done this wrong, painted it the wrong colour, something didn't look right etc etc

At the time it really got under my skin, after all our hard work to be sort of ripped apart, quite cynically tbh.

Whereas on the Forum, people have followed my restoration blog, really helped me at times where I've had decisions to make, made good comments and gave good advice that has really helped. I've also closely followed other restorations which have given great insights into things I didn't really see before.

    I think that's the difference.

I completely agree with your comments about FB, although it can be useful there are a lot of rude, obnoxious and arrogant people who post unnecessary comments, while this forum genuinely has people who are interested in sharing advice and admiration for other people’s hard work.

  7. It could just be that time of year, it’s still wet cold and miserable, if like myself your working mainly outside on your projects, this time of year is not very progressive 🤞when the weather improves the project updates will start rolling in.

  8. You’ve also got the 80th anniversary of Market garden this year so prices are likely to be slightly inflated, personally I think your better to wait until the end of the year until the show season is over and compare prices then.

Yeah always my intention a new one would look so out of place,  saying this I've just got a new screen canvas so need to weather it somewhat.

The screen canvas is easy to weather, just scrunch it up a few times and drag it around the floor 😁 adds patina…

No hood as yet, might not even bother with one tbh.

TBH my hood spends most of the time stowed under the passenger seat, you could look for a second hand one for the rare occasion it gets used.

Oh, I'm sure it will fit either mast, but I only bought it for the collection of aerial bits (not having a vehicle to put it on).

What I really wanted was the one for the Racal 27-ft mast (MA683) on a Lightweight landy, but got outbid in that auction.

    Chris.

    Thanks for your help 👍

  12. My original carburettor has now been repaired, I’d like to thank John Attlee for his engineering expertise, John re-tapped the thread and made a new longer banjo bolt 👍👍

I am still looking for a rebuild kit in particular a gasket set for the carb if anyone can help please let me know.
