  1. hello, can any one shed any light or come across this before, sorry for sounding stupid:embarrassed:..i put the top of my dodge engine together...starts fine, but smokes, its buring oil....I have taken off manifolds again:nut:,,to find quite a lot of oil building up inside the inlet manifolds,,please please has some one got an answer,i will post a pic or two if I can figure out how to,,darren

    Hi Darren,

You don't say what you did to your engine, assuming you did not remove the head? Sounds like inlet valve guides are worn and oil being sucked up through them...... there are no valve seals on side valves.

    cheers Richard

  2. Just here next to me. I'm going to run one until it disintegrates and use the intervening time to plan my repower. The DOHC design was amazing in 1949 and has a good power to weight ratio for even the period of the CVR(T) introduction but just does not have the strength to be a reliable bit of gear.

The J60 was in military service in the CVR(T) for around 30 years, and yes some did blow apart at times, but that was in service. Surely as a private owner you are not going to drive to destruction? Like all vehicles, they have their limits, you exceed them and pay the price.

  3. It is curious that there is no mention of the state of ransom when I log in & look in my library, just looks like it always did. A strange & aggressive marketing strategy indeed, it even made me wonder if it was one of those worldwide hacks of late.

One forum I was looking at someone has actually paid up, but the images remain blocked. Makes you wonder.

    Hi Clive,

    It looks a genuine ploy by Photobucket, see here;

  4. Unfortunately we still don't seem to have resolved the "unwanted thumbnails" issue when posting direct to the Forum ...

    Andy

Not having access to the 'mechanics' of this forum, I have no idea, but guess it might have occurred after an update. The webmaster should be the one to solve the 'unwanted thumbnails' issue.

  5. I have a thread in the motorcycle forum, regarding a Matchless WD I'm restoring, I was browsing over it today as I was going to add a few pics and all the pics in the thread have gone and been replaced with something that looks like a speedo and states 3rd party hosting has been temporally blocked.......

Bit disappointed as another forum I frequent all the pictures are saved once posted, I would of thought the same with the HMVF ?? It takes a lot of time sorting through pictures to post and uploading them etc and then to find they have gone. nyone else have this or is it just my bad luck.

I normally post photos straight from the Picture folder on my pc, never have any problems. Never used Photobucket, etc. and I know there have been issues before with other members losing pictures of their posts by using that medium.

  6. Right chaps, having supplied 24v to 'SOL' directly she is cranking over smoothly. I have checked 'IGN' in the junc box and am getting 24v there but sadly no spark at the plugs. Where is my next port of call? King lead off at distributor end and check there? I have to admit I'm not sure how the threaded connections come apart.

    Hi Lewis,

If the engine has not run for some years, then the first thing to do is clean the contact breaker points. This is not uncommon for them to get a coating on.

  7. What is the solex carb model number on the Jaguar J60 engine? Where are the diaphrams and parts available in the US or UK?

Has anyone ever changed over to E type SU carbs? or other brand?

Has anyone ever change oil filter to screw on type?

    Thanks

    Roger,

I can see no advantage fitting twin SU carbs to a J60, not as if there is good access to keep them in tune, and not only that, I doubt there is room to fit them and get an intake pipe to air cleaner. They have been in use for over 40 years with the Solex. Same with oil filter, 'why mend what ain't broke' as the old saying goes.

  8. Can anyone give me any info on the Norton 633cc Big 4 SWD. In Particular, their role in Australia. I've been told the RAAF may have used them?

What part of Australia are you in? I know a guy with a restored one over there. Could put you in touch as I am sure he will know.

    regards Richard

  9. Hi Richard

Thanks for the quick response, the distance I can push it in is about 7/8". That is why I was concerned. I will post a photo in the next few days (the enging block is not at my house at the moment, it is very heavy to lift!). I will also inspect the gears.

    Cheers

    Richard

That is quite a bit of slack. When new they are snug, any slack allows backlash on the cam which ultimately effects both valve and ignition timing

  10. Hi

How much allowable play is allowed in the timing chain, see attached drawing

    attachment.php?attachmentid=127082&stc=1

    From the Bedford Shop Manual

    Type: Duplex Roller

    Pitch: 3/8"

    Number of Pitches: 54

Width over Joint: 0.93" [is this the allowable play, as I have never come across this term before

    Cheers

    Richatd

    Richard,

The width measurement relates to the chain type. There should be no appreciable slackness. If there is a lot of slack then both sprockets need checking for wear as well, as when fitting a new chain on worn sprockets, it will not last long. Take a photo of yours on the engine, with you pushing one run in so we can see how much slack there is.

  11. So Thornycroft trucks were built by a company that had no association with the Thornycroft company that were building naval vessels ? The book I have , published in the 1950's , details the history of the Thornycroft business, it includes chapters on both the land vehicles and the marine vessels . I am confused

    Mike,

In 1904 the vehicle side of Thornycroft was split up from the shipbuilding side in to two different companies. In 1961 the truck business passed to ACV (Associated Commercial Vehicles), of which AEC was a part of, it had been renamed Transport Equipment (Thornycroft) Ltd. Later it was part of British Leyland, but this was when the vehicle designs such as Nubian, passed to Scammell.

This will explain the timeline easier; http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Thornycroft

  12. This is relating more to plant than AFV because they have fixed trackgear, ie. no suspension, so that is why the tensioning rams are under such high pressure because of the springs on them. Still good advice regarding anywhere a grease nipple is fitted and grease is pumped in under a high pressure.

The bit of advise in the HSE bulletin about not parking tracks on wet concrete is priceless.

  13. When I was a trainee engineer my first machine shop lecturer told us "never put your finger anywhere you wouldn't put your dick" that sound advise has saved me many times. I always pass that though on when ever I spot anyone poking a finger in some dodgy hole!

I was going to quote that saying yesterday, but thought someone might take offence :D

I have seen fitters fitting truck road springs and venturing to put there fingers in the spring hanger to check alignment, madness. Used to tell them off if I spotted them.
