  1. This is my dad. F.R. Eales, 1923 - 2004.

As I understand it, before and during the war he worked for Vickers at Weybridge as an electrician on Wellingtons.

After the war he did his national service and was posted to Austria, dates unfortunately unknown.

To set the scene here is a collection of post cards with notes on them.

  2. Hi,

I have inherited my late fathers photo albums from when he was in National Service and posted to Austria thought to be late 1940s - early 50s. It was an MT yard so some mv pics but also others showing people and places. He mentioned once he'd spent time at Syresham, didn't expand on it and never spoke of his time in Austria at all so apart from some with notes on the back I have no context for them. Would you like to see them, just the MV related ones or a wider spread?

    Rob.

  4. I've no idea - I'm only an amateur at this so my excuse is that I only took the photos!

I see what you mean, but it wouldn't have occurred to me to be wrong. Apparently post war it was ex Belgian then French military, I think he said cast 1990 if I understood the time line.

I kept looking at the Jeep thinking something didn't look right but couldn't pin it down until I compared it with Simon's previous post... then it was obvious.

I don't know who any of the owners/drivers were.

  5. Hi,

In the early 1980's a farm I worked on had a trailer of a type I'd like to acquire if I can find one. Unfortunately no photos, similar to what I think is a 'British No9' but without the cross axis pivot on the front, so here goes...

Pre 1980 makers plate as Taskers of Andover, 4 wheel, turntable type.

'A' frame drawbar, ring hitch, overrun brakes.

10 x 6 deck, was probably originally dropside although it only had an 18" headboard when we had it.

Bar grip type tyres, possibly 750x16 but could easily have been 20", certainly on split rims.

    Leaf springs,

If I had to guess I'd say RAF yellow in colour.

    Any suggestions please?

  6. Not having a military background myself my attempts to google the history info at the bottom I would translate as (and apologies if it's really obvious and I missed it)...

Ordnance depot Antwerp - would that be Emblem? I read the A/C as air conditioned but I doubt it!

21st Signals Regiment - still in Belgium maybe?

ADT - active duty training unit or auction house?

  7. Hi, on tractor forum a lwb Land Rover has been spotted living in France. Bought from army surplus (location unknown) it's thought to be a 1984 S3, 24v, ffr, civy reg B83 XST. Is there any way of finding a bit more history on it for it's owner with only it's civy reg?

    Thanks.

  8. Hi,

Just pulled my caravan out of the bushes for another season, and started with the running gear. There's always been something odd about the tyres, not that there's anything wrong with them, but I'll explain...

It's a french built Gruau 37 built 1994. The tyres are 175-70/14T as per the manual. The spare supplied when new is 165/13C also as per the manual! A full size spare won't fit in the spare wheel space. The running tyres look absolutely pristine with 8mm of tread no cracks or wear of any type but as I've had it 5 years I'll treat it to some new ones.

So where do I find the date code? Google suggests a four digit no. week/year, but all I can find on these is a six digit no. ddmmyy perhaps? If this is the case then these are 010290. Scary. What's worse is that as it's a 1994 model that suggests the tyres were 4 years old before they were fitted. If I was buying new I don't think I'd even consider checking something like that.

So moving on, do I fit 175-70/14T as per the manual, or do I deviate from the manual and fit C rated tyres as apparently required by law and risk a ticket for not using the correct OEM specification?

I would ask on a dedicated caravan forum but all they seem to do is argue amongst each other as to who's more qualified to give answers and if your 'van is more than 2 years old they're not interested anyway!

    Any thoughts appreciated.
