  1. don't laugh, but some time ago I acquired a spartan that someone had done a civvy diesel conversion on, and noticed some gook on the road wheels-turns out 7 had shed their rubber complete as doughnuts, do he scuffed up the wheels with a grinder and araldited them back on!

    don't laugh-as far as I know they're still on there!

  2. The demise of Withams selling a seemingly endless stream of armour to temp new blood into our hobby stopped. The BIG show has stopped. Covid  has crippled all shows and museums. Is it just me or has our hobby just gone off a cliff? Lots of kit for sale and it doesnt appear to be selling. Six figure armour (WWII) seems unaffected, as its a strong investment to those with deep pockets.

    Difficult to value these with such a diminishing market.

    what do you think?

  3. Off road tests were allowed some years ago, but now a H licence test must be conducted on the Queen's highway in and out of traffic-hence the legal requirements of registered, insured, etc etc. I think it is still allowed to have a 'commander' with you during the test if your vehicle has restricted views

    it really is essential that you take your test in the type of vehicle you want to use.speeds and controls of tracked vehicles vary massively. I would not recommend taking your test in a tiny plastic 250kg 10mph argo, that has been converted into a 'tracked' vehicle, then driving around in a 50mph 8 ton cvrt or 12 ton 30mph 432-recipe for a nasty mishap.

    this is one of very few countries where you can still drive armour on the road, and all it takes is for our bad news media to get hold of a story...........

  5. I have found a scorpion prototype without any id but it does have p number stamped on most components. Construction, welding and interior fit is different to to production models. Can the p number be cross referenced  to an SP registration?

  6. The Deltic was way ahead of its time, and a modern day redesign smaller capacity deltic would make a truly stunning ultra compact power plant with fantastic hp/litre figures with emissions bought up to date by current electronic injection systems

    long live the 2 stroke!

  7. Had a pipe fracture on an Abbott  here. Local diesel injection shop made a brand new one. Old one fractured as  one of the anti-vibration clamps that fit on the pipes between pump and injector had come loose allowing the pipe to oscillate and fail!

  8. the hole is meant to be there!

    it is a witness hole and serves two purposes;

    lets you know when the two oil seals between the pump part and the motor part have  failed (diesel will seep out of the hole)

    stops leaking diesel filling the electric motor which has the potential to start a fire

    as mentioned on here, stopping a small problem with a bodge may well lead to something much worse.......

  9. British army practice was to fit a second toothed belt in position but tied back out the way. Always thought it a bit odd until one day gunning down a very busy single track lane miles from home, the belt failed!

    lorry driver in the qeue behind lent me an adjustable, lift the lid, slack off the alternator belt and loosen the fan, slide on the spare belt-done

    that was a godsend, and saved a heck of a lot of grief!
