  1. I would like to know if a British WWII soldier in the European Theater in 1944-1945 could have carried ammunition produced in Canada or produced in South Africa or maybe some other countries? And may this ammo also have been interware production?

  2. I recently came across these socks which were stored in a cardboard box for many years and still look very good. I wonder if they are second world war period? They are marked Army grey, made in England, size 10 inch as can be seen on the picture.

    I've seen socks with a label stitched inside but were always post war or jungle issue. I once saw socks that were stamped in the same way as this pair and were dated 1944. However these are undated.

    They also have that typical old scent that makes them useless as Christmas socks 😁

    Unfortunately I 'm not on facebook and the LTF website does not show a detailed program. Is there a chance for me to find out if and where I can watch the XXX corps tommorrow September 22nd as this is my last chance. I would also like to show this to my son who is 18 years old and has never seen this. I would be greatful if anybody can tell me where to be tomorrow for the XXX corps!!!

  4. Yesterday I read a Dutch newspaper article about the event with which everything became clear to me.

    There appear to be two organization groups i.e. "Liberation task force" and "Stichting operation Market Garden". The southern and northern convoy routes are organized by the "Stichting operation Market Garden" in which in particular US vehicles participate. In the  "Liberation task force" in particular British vehicles participate.

    I didn't know that. The reason of two organization groups is a difference in insight about what the event should look like. Let's not discuss about that topic. So, to me, as a British vehicle enthousiast it doesn't make much sense to drive all the way to Nijmegen or area to see the so called "northern route" on Sunday 22nd of September.

  5. Thank you Pete and Tim! Awesome video …!

    Maybe I am late with my questions and had to ask them before all started! I hope all these vehicles shown in the video Pete added to this post will participate in the northern convoy route this comming Sunday? If I'm right this route will travel from base camp in Schijndel to the other camp in Grave, then to Groesbeek and ending in Nijmegen. Does anybody perhaps know? I only have the oppertunity to go on Sunday and I would like to see all the British very much.

Last Saturday I 've watched the 75th anniversary Hells Highway southern route vehicles convoy about 10 km from the starting point in Leopoldsburg Belgium. To me as a British vehicles enthousiast the convoy was very disappointing. Hardly any British WWII vehicles. I remember only one Bedford MW, one Fordson WOT2, one C15 CMP, a few utility cars and that's about it. Maybe I have forgotten one but at least no British armoured vehicles, no bren carriers and no tanks at all. If I have looked closely I have hardly seen British license plates on the vehicles. The passing of the convoy took only half an hour. I hope it will be worth it to drive all the way up to Nijmegen next Sunday September 22nd in the hope to see an awesome convoy. WHERE WILL THE BRITISH BE WITH THEIR BRITISH VEHICLES?????????WHERE DO I HAVE TO BE?????????

Looking at the so called "Dapple"/"Foliage" or “Mickey Mouse” camouflage pattern on the Bedford MWD as shown in the pictures below I was wondering how the camouflage pattern on the GS-body may look like with the tarpaulin taken off the vehicle.  I have indicated this in red implying that some “ears” will not be there on the GS-body.  Is this correct, or could there be any “ears” under the tarpaulin which means that there are actually two patterns, with and without tarpaulin?

    The above pattern is similar to the pattern below.

    Is the above pattern typical for the MWD and will it be different on a MWR and MW compressor truck as shown below or is it just a variety of choice by the painter?

    The camouflage pattern in the following pictures (MWR and compressor truck) is different to some extent. Here the pattern is "lowered" and may be the same on as well the tarpaulin as on the body.

    All above patterns have a similar structure but I would like to know if the varieties are typical for each type of vehicle (MWD versus MWR or MW compressor truck) or was it a painter's choice or maybe period dependent?

    Furthermore, I would like to know how the side steps, petrol tanks, mud flaps, tow rop box and petrol can bracket on a bedford MWD are blackened? Will they be completely black or just what can be viewed from the side, top and/or back? But how then for, for instance, the petrol tank which is half hidden in the tub and half hidden under the vehicle?

    Summarized, I would like to know how to black painting a MWD with the above as a guide!

  8. OD paint is porous at the surface to give it a matt look. This property is because of the addition of a matting agent such as precipitated silica but only at a dosage of a few percent. Water will certainly not penetrate through the paint layer such that the metal underneath will rust because of the presence of the silica or matting agent. On the contrary, the presence of silica will have a positive effect on corrosion because of its anti corrosion property.

    Weathering of coating films causes, in particular, a change of the film surface as function of time. Depending on weather conditions and on the resistance of the binders, pigments and fillers used and on the pigment volume concentration, there will be more or less degradation of the coating film surface. In the case of matted exterior coatings, the  choice of binders is quite important.

  9. My son who is 16 years old has started to collect some British WWII webbing. Now he likes to know the difference between the ammo boots with and without the hobnailed soles. And how about the horseshoe toe and heel? Which type of shoes will he need for an infantry display? Are there perhaps some good sites or forums on the internet?

  10. I wonder if these four bolts are countersunk bolts. They are not listed in the Bedford authorised service parts catalogue. 16 carriage bolts 5/16 Whit. x 1 1/2" are listed for body front reinforcement which is the maximum number of bolts.

    I found below picture from Andy's bedford which implies that the carriage bolts go through the gutter. If you have a close look you can see the head of the carriage bolt as well as the flat washer on this MW.

    So at the moment we actually having three suggestions:

    • 4 countersunk bolts at top of front board (not officially listed) resulting in straight placement of gutter

    • 4 carriage bolts behind the gutter/no holes through the gutter resulting in a curved placement fit of gutter to some extent

    • 4 carriage bolts (with or without flat washers) through the gutter resulting in a straigt placement 

    Any suggestions?

  11. I wanted to place the gutter in the cab of my bedford MW until I encountered the next bottleneck. It looks like the two upper carriage bolts on the body front board (4 total) hinder the placement of the gutter (see picture below). At least the gutter will not be straight from the left to the right side of the cab by the bolts sticking out, unless I have to unscrew the 4 carriage bolts and drill some holes in the gutter and then return the bolts. What way is correct?

    Nice pictures indeed! Sufficient evidence to apply a Mickey mouse camouflage pattern on my Bedford MW. Everyone will agree that more pictures are welcome to enjoy!

    Any chance to discuss about which pattern on a Bedford MWD? Maybe like the pattern on the MWR below? Similar pattern on the MWD below?
