  1. Hello Paul

    CVRT boxes are known for making a lot of noise at idle due to their design - something to do with the hydraulic valves. Having said that I've never heard one making quite the same noise as that one of yours! Have you spoken to AB? He might be able to diagnose better. Or if it coming from the clutch area just try dismantling that bit first to save a full replacement..

    Oh and the rad looks fine to me - you just need to spend a wet sunday afternoon straightening the fins with some tweezers..!!!

    Good luck

    Tim

  2. Subscribed! Always liked the look of AFVs w/o their turrets on. Wonder what the performance of that saladin would be like w/o all that weight? Also curious about that "chopped" ferret. Interesting mod to the rear plate.

    Matt

    Well the purpose of removing the turret was to upgun the m113's rather than to make the Sally faster, but it is an interesting thought. Put a 50 cal mount in the hole and it would make an interesting recce vehicle, much like the wartime Stuarts that had this done. I imagine it would fly!!! I wonder if it was the upgunned m113's that inspired the fv432/30's....?

  3. Perfect! Just ordered the m/c's, that's this weekend taken care of!

    I must admit though, I was a bit surprised that the main brake m/c is the same as the steering ones, I was expecting the main brake cylinder to be a bit bigger given it's operating two calipers each with larger pistons, but I guess the steering ones must just be over spec'd? Or is it more for practical/commonality reasons should they need replacing in the field?

    James

    James

    I guess part commonality is a consideration but in practice it's pretty rare to make use of the main brakes anyway - they tend to stop pretty quickly once you take your foot off the gas..!

  4. ...and rust means bust!!!

    My little old Lightweight (1972 very early s3) spends most of its life tucked up in the unit picking up surface rust, but over the last few weeks my car has been off the road (heater matrix) so I've been using it more or less daily. The results are remarkable:

    The hub seals have stopped leaking;

    The engine and gearbox have (mostly) stopped leaking;

    The engine ticks over sweetly and consistently;

    The brake lights, which I've spent years trying to fix, now work when they should and not when they shouldn't every time....

    Note to self, give the old girl a good run at least once a month!

  5. Tim,

    How did you get on with the LR master cylinders in the end, no problems I take it?

    Stripped the three m/c's out of my Spartan ready for rebuilding yesterday so just wondered if there were any updates before ordering the parts.

    Cheers,

    James

    Still working perfect mate. In fact if anything the LR one is a bit firmer....recommended...I've ordered a stack of them and the seal kits to go with them, much better than the £100+ which seems to be the going rate for cvrt ones...

  6. If you scared looking at the photos you want to try standing near it the first time you fire it and hope it stays in one lump, we got 4 inches of barrel recoil on the Monday

    I fired Saladin 76mm for the first time over the bank holiday weekend. I think it is fair to say I s**t myself. Apparently my face was a picture, but boy couldnt stop grinning for ages afterwards!!!

  7. Hire a steam cleaner maybe if thats possible

    That would be handy to see I suspect I'll be doing it the manual way

    Andy its not too bad to do manually if theres two of you (though of course 3 is better) you just need to take your time and make sure you dont fall off the side/ hole the radiator/ drop it on your toes (steelies are a good idea!).. You can also make it easier with an engine crane - just wrap some strops round and through various holes - as its not very well balanced you will still need to support it but it just helps to take the lions share of the weight...

    Nothing beats a jet wash and degreaser mate. As Im sure Chris would advise drill some holes in the hull (you can tap and bolt them afterwards if you feel inspired to) and get in there with the jetwash. As mine was laid up inside I tried to do it by hand but it will take you days, as opposed to a couple of hours...eventually I put buckets under the drain holes and just kept emptying them periodically...

  9. The title of this thread :-

    Re: Salisbury Plain Camouflage Scheme

    ---------

    This is getting me a little confused , is there presently / has been in the past - a DP that has gone by the official MOD title of "Salisbury Plain Camouflage Scheme" ??

    To me - it is just the same as has been used by British forces in Cyprus and the Canadian Training Area ?

    Apart from the colour tint (the reasons we are probably aware of) , it seems to me that a new and unneccesary common term is creeping in and that is going to involve yet another abbrv. SPCS DP

    You seem to be forgetting CATC BG at Warminster who also use the sand and green scheme! I think the point is this scheme can turn up in a number of places. When used in training is it always the case that it is used to differentiate OPFOR vehicles, but presume this isn't the case in Cyprus?

  10. Just got back - shattered!

    Never did manage to sort the saladin brakes properly but took the spartan for a few spins including a fantastic high speed blast round the bottom field after hours!

    Firepower displays superb but we could probably do with a bit more arena action - plenty of vehicles but not enough drivers!

    Fireworks display Sunday night was phenomenal.

    Had fun (not) bump starting the stolly this morning due to a duff starter.

    If you havent been then put this in the diary for next year - it is turning into a great show.

  11. Yes it does, all the way through the video, same place about 3/4 way across the screen single black line from lower edge going upwards about 2/3 up the screen, at 2nd watch it looks like a vehicle aerial in the foreground of the shot but it stays in exactly the same place all through the video even as you pan round. It is not on any of your other videos.

    Very odd - not there on mine..!

  12. Paul,

    After a number of years operating the J60 engined vehicles which run wide open screamming at you the diesel just has a lot of low down torque and grunt with instant throttle response without all the revs needed. Even when you do give it revs it all sounds so much more controlled unlike the J60 which sounds like it wants to grenade.....

    R

    So glad you said that Robin, I thought it was my driving!!! :D

  13. I suspect that MOD's decision to upgrade was more about obsolescence, reliability and fire hazard than anything else.

    Andy

    I think you're right Andy - I also seem to remember experiments with a diesel motorbike as these were the only things not on the same fuel. Were there not a couple of nasty incidents on peacekeeping operations in Bosnia which drove the fire hazard point home as well?

    Cheers

  14. anyone know the difference between the diesel and the petrol cvrt...petrol cheaper so fuel consumption wont be far different price wise, the 6bta engine isnt massively torquey or powerful so I asume it is not as fast as the petrol one, or am i wrong....anyone know the answers...

    Paul

    I haven't driven a diesel but everyone I know who has raves about them....I suspect the difference is greater than the bare figures on a page suggests. Personally I love my J60's (but then I would say that wouldnt I!)...

    I have always had a hankering to do a souped up J60 version, just for a giggle. If you have ever seen Jon P's prototype Scorpion he built the engine to the prototype spec ie 220ish bhp, and it flies, but then the hull is non armoured as well so that helps I guess. He always seems to have a whale of a time driving it that is for sure...
