  1. How many 432's are actually with units?

Presumably they are used in specialist roles rather than as APC's. The principal APC (or what ever they are classed as) must still be Warrior.

  2. I doubt if any Challenger 2 will come out because even if they are not going to put them in storage, they will be a cheap source of spares for those remaining.

Presumably very few are actually now with units, most being in storage.

From memory they re-engined the best part of 1000 FV432. What possible use could there have been for that number even before the cuts. These will start coming out in unissued condition. I wonder if people will be able to licence them for the road.

  3. No individual vehicle war histories survive for any WW2 British vehicles.

Unit war diaries often list the numbers of the tanks on strength but you will have to do your own research on units which used this particular mark and do your own reading at Bovington.

The bible on Churchill's is obviously David Fletcher's book.

  4. Richard

If it helps it came via Preston who I believe had brought it from a children's playground or similar.

I would imagine that it was released from service at a fairly early stage as it still had the first pattern stowage boxes and plate on the rear which stopped the early pattern fire extinguishers getting covered in mud.

Having served in the LAD of the RWY the markings clinched the deal for me. The Bovington Records only covering the period in the UK confirmed the RWY and later RY service. I also have a copy of a film taken in 1967-8 showing two of these marks in service on annual camp.

There was one that useed to go to Detling but the owner assured me it was not my old vehicle.

  5. I am still trying to find out where my old one ended up.

It was sold to a dealer about 10 years ago as an empty hull.

There was an article on it in the defunct MV Magazine.

It was interesting for me as under the paint were Royal Wiltshire Yeomanary Markings 43rd Wessex Division.

At least two of these marks served with the RWY during the 1960's.

  6. If you have the right contacts and your face fits there is always the possibility of acquiring or swapping a gate guardian.

I can think of a person who acquired a number of Daimler Armoured Cars and spares from others being used as gate guardians.

I was meant to be restoring the Daimler Armoured Car for the RWY at Swindon but they gave it away to another unit after assuring me that they would never do it. They then in turn swapped it for a working Saladin from a private collector.

The Sheffield Churchill was discussed on a different thread at the time. It is was indeed owned by the Council as some claimed, anyone can submit a Freedom of Information request for a full disclosure on any deal.

  7. I had an oil pipe burst once on my Humber A/C spraying the exhaust manifold with oil.

The smoke screen it put down was very impressive and we all bailed out in a hurry thinking it was about to blow.

    Luckily very little damage.

Don't relie on the old British Army Fire extinguishers as fitted to Land Rovers and similar because they are designed for use in enclosed areas where a blanket of gas can build up. I tried using one on Ferret Carburetor Fire one and it just fanned the flames.

  8. The Museum has never had a policy of doing anything other than cosmetic restorations.

This is partially policy and partially the cost.

A lot of modern vehicles which have been donated by the army in running condition in the past have been left out-side to rot.

I also donated examples of the two war-time fibre British Army Tank Helmets about 20 years ago which have never been on display and someone I spoke to several years ago commented that he could not remember them in storage.

  9. A combination of over supply and the story you cannot register them for road use any more is probably depressing the market.

A believe from another thread the latter of these is in correct but quite possibly only through the ignorance of the DVLA Office the owners vehicle was registered through. Another office may give a different option.

  10. Just a question. Cost of technical check and of handling/restitution of the weapon are borne by the plods or by the owner?

Not totally sure what you are asking, but if the Police seized your weapon for further inspection because you did not have a deact certificate this would be at their cost.

They would probably then tell you to collect from a location of their choice.

If you decided to get a replacement deac certificate this would be your choice and at your expense.
