  1. Not at all - I have a bit of a reputation for taking a month of Sunday's to get around to doing things, so more than happy that you have saved me the trouble :)

NB - Blog Number 167 is the same truck. This was how is was when Robert Clayden first bought it, but being a perfectionist, he researched the Chassie-Number and deduced that it had been re-fitted with a hard cab post war. He then sourced an excellent condition Open Cab and converted it back to how it would have been when it was built. He also sourced an original wartime fuel tank and replaced the incorrect one, which you can see in the photo on Blog Spot 167.

Hope this helps make things a bit clearer.

Ahhhh yes, good spot. I'll adjust accordingly, and replace 167 with a different truck when I next come across one I don't have recorded.

    Cheers

  2. Excellent looking job ! Well done to all involved !:thumbsup::bow::-)

I had a slot set aside on my CCKW Photo Blog (No 71) for this vehicle Clive. Hope you don't mind, I've lifted a couple of photos off this thread and added them to it. :cool2:

  3. Seriously though I can't believe the fella is standing in the loco still. Brave ,or mad , or is it that he knows he is safe with a Jimmy?

I know !! I wouldn't want to be going more than a crawl round most corners with the centre of gravity as high as it must be with that load ! :)

  4. A great truck & my very first MV :cool2: . However, I think they are about as long as a CCKW so there's that parking space issue again.... Their long whellbase does make for a smoother ride not quite as bouncy as the shorter wheel based WC51 and yes, the 1.5 ton Dodges are underpowered. I guess vehicle size would also depend on how many friends are you planing on bringing along?

Is the bhp per ton worse than the GMC then ? A GMC is approx 5 tons and the (net) bhp is 91.5 which gives I reckon about 18 bhp per ton. Slightest hill, I'm slowing downnnnnn :)

  5. I'd like to add another *must have* item

If your truck is still 6V (like all proper CCKWs should be :) ) you'll need a 6V to 12V dc-dc converter to power gadgets like phones, GPS and recharge LED torches.

They are small and very easy to wire up.

Or a 5V solar charger with the proper hookups.

    Deadline

I'm with you. To get the full GMC experience a 6v painfully slow turn-over on start-up is a must have ! LOL :D

    I wouldn't change mine :)

I have looked here in the UK, and thus far have been unable to find a commercially available 6v to 12v converter that I can buy off the shelf. Do you know of any in the US ?

    Kind regards

  6. Desert Rat, I get between 8 - 10 mpg out of my 352 and find a comfortable cruising speed to be 35 – 37mph. If you go for a GMC would suggest the 353 Open cab version. I would then take the canvas back off the cab, and omit the front curtain off the cargo, and then either make a canvas screen up yourself, or ask Allied to make one that fastens to the from the back of the cab to the cargo canvas (there is a pic on my photo blog of someone who has done just that). That way you can have one or two people in the back lounging in comfortable chairs (if they have any sense) but able to see out the front and chat to the people in the front. That said, in my experience conversation in a GMC at 35mph+ tends to be more of a shout above all the noises the vehicle makes ! LOL

  7. Gents, I have a bit of an idea for a trip but would appreciate the thoughts, opinions and advice of the rest of you. Having just returned from a wonderful tour of Normandy (managed to do all the beaches plus para-drop zones and the Maisy Battery which has just been opened for anyone who hasn't been - go see it !) Now, myself and four others got talking as you do and we are considering the following: Buy a GMC 353 and then drive from the UK across to the Ardennes, look around for a few days and then drive back. Now, we will stay in hotels as I do enjoy at least some comforts these days. The truck will obviously have to be a decent one as reliability is a must. So, is it too much to expect from an old 353 these days ? (I have owned a couple before but literally owned them, drove them to a couple of shows and then did a deal on a DT-981) What would be the things to consider before even getting into this ? Seriously, I would like to hear your thoughts. Thank you.

Sounds a brilliant idea ! :) No reason why a GMC shouldn't do the round trip okay. Buy one, give it a really really good service, change the water pump (unless its been in recent years), take some spare parts and a good box of tools with you, make sure you have recovery in place (just in case), and you should be fine :)

    Kind regards

  8. Hi there, just a thought, have you tried Seals Direct ? I got a suitable outer seal for the windscreen of my closed cab Jimmy from them. They're a good bunch of blokes and have an extensive range of various rubber extrusions. They're quick too and will post you examples for comparison. Contact details are:- sales@sealsplusdirect.co.uk tel:- 08452263345.

Rex Ward doesn't stock the seal, and I got the brush off from Jeep Parts. Rex suggested Seal+Direct like you. Looking at the page http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/shopping.asp?intDepartmentId=68 any idea which one you ordered ?

    Kind regards
