  1. mmm...I've been watching this thread for while now, and been scared to comment :)

Its a real shame if you as a moderator were not allowed to have an opinion or offer advice on the forum you joined as a plain ol' member! It is always the case that folk with experience or knowledge in the subject end up moderating.

For me, folks' opinions, good or bad, positive or negative are what helps me, as a newcomer to the MV scene to decide what is right for me and my vehicles, bearing in mind my budget and capabilities.

If I turned up on a Ferrari forum (chance would be a fine thing) with a blinged out Ferrari Limo I would most certainly expect some critiscm despit the tremendous amount of work I had put into it (and yes, there is a F40 limo out there somewhere!).

I am sure like evryone agrees, Mike has put a tremendous amount of work into his pig and it seems a top job, but to the purists (and many non-purists) it is more a curiosity and amusement than anything else. I am sure he would not turn up at a military show, as that is most likley not his scene, but it does not mean we cannot offer him advice?

  2. I am about to fit a turret ring on my Ferret. What should I use to seal the plate to hull?

When I cleaned it all up, there appeared to be a grey putty, not unlike dumdum. Is that the best thing to use, or should I use silicon sealant (although that would make it a real pain to remove in future).

There was also sealant daubed around the turret ring bearing mounts, should I use sealent there also?

    Thanks

    Mick

    I guess "faux" means non-original :)

  4. yeh...I saw those solar panels....£5.99 each (12V/ 1W), the 2.4W one looks a better bet as it appears a bit more waterproof and still only £12.99.

yes, we discussed the snake cam at work, it all got a bit silly and childish! :)

  5. I did turn up as a regular visitor on Friday with the kids, saw Lee was tied up with punters so did not disturb him, all I could see was Neil's @rse sticking out of the top of the OT so did not disturb him either.... thought I would go back over to Americas field towards the end of the day but it lashed down...the kids were soaking and wanted to go home, so that was that.

I think they are converted...just need to work on the missus now...maybe next year!

  6. Deuce: So if the vehicle runs, the seller hands the keys to the guys on the dock, they drive it onto the ship for its ride to America, then they drive it off and put it into a yard until I (or some one else) picks it up?

I'm not sure I would be happy letting anyone drive a ferret (Saracen etc) who has not driven a pre-select gearbox before. They would most likley use the gear change pedal as a clutch?

If they are going to tow it, I would also make sure the forward/reverse lever is disengaged (someone here will be able to explain the reason, but I am sure towing with the transfer box enagaged is not a good thing).

  7. Guys,

I have a relacement (NOS) oil cooler, but before taking the old one off are there any pointers?

I assume there should be no oil in the cooler, so can just disconnect and plumb in the new one? Should I use any sealer on the connections?

    Cheers

  8. Can't see much modern stuff being persevered with in 60 years time. Few people will be interested in re-making the parts for them. Look at the old stuff, simple and rugged, nothing complicated it could be made/re-made to go on forever.

so what's going to happen when current military vehicles get into collectors hands? i assume they are stuffed full of electronics and even engine manegement systems? Or will all that be stripped out before disposal?

  9. I have read through Clives excellent paint documents, but cannot find the lettering size for the movement by air stencil.

I can see that the black background needs to be about 10" square, but just need the letter height for Chalk No, RAW etc.

    Thanks,

    Mick

  10. Maybe worth taking the jets out of the carb and giving them a clean (they are all fixed jets and easy to get to.

Maybe worth checking the diaphrams in teh carb also, as mine had perished.

Check the altitude compensator, mine was stuck and made it run really bad. Also, when I put mine back together I had the choke set in the incorrect position (180deg out...or was it 90deg), which made it run very badly as the choke (cold start) was always on.
