  1. Hi,

     

    An elderley gent up the road gave us two propeller ends, he said that his dad was in the RAF in WW1 and apparently the tradition was to take parts off of any downed German places, this is how his dad ended up with these ends.

     

    The bits that I have are 190mm across and 28mm thick. Has anyone else heard of this tradition or souvenir hunting? And would anyone have an educated idea of what type of biplane they may have come from?

     

    Unusually the reverse side is flat with virtually no profile?

Hi I got one tested and plated plus down rated to 7.5 ton so the owner could drive it.lights are the main bits you have to do due to age no under run bars no taco no type aprovel break wise they used a meter on the foot well drive along at the speed they tell you then stop quick when they say hand break wise park on the slope they have a testing station if it holds its ok.

    I have these rods but they are too short for the bricks on the bulk heads of an M10 17pdr. The wooden pole is 44.5 inches overall length and the aluminium 4ft overall length. Does anyone know what type of poles, how long and what end fittings, should a 17pdr have? And are the poles different for the 17pdr artillery piece than the one fitted in the tank/tank destroyer?

  5. Hi,

     

    Your sequence of pictures reminds me of the scene in the film The Lord of War with Nicolas Cage where the indigenous population reduce an aircraft to a skeleton!

     

    Why is the fan in the centre of the two radiators - it doesn't strike me as an efficient place to put a fan? In the picture sequence where you are using the extractor tool on a link arm; the link arm from the chassis there is a steel plate with two springs - what does that do?

  6. I did down rate an M series 6x6 2 1/2 ton and put it through test and plate for some one that wanted to use it commercially but only had a 7.5 ton licence. I contacted a road spring manufacturer and gave them the size and amount of the leaves on the bogey, they came back with remove x amount and that will down rate bogey to x. Most importantly paper work to confirm the downrating was provided. The only comment I got at the goods testing station was not much pay load on a big truck!

     

    In a similar vain I was having a conversation with someone who has a Foden 6x6 that according to the Jane's book 25,338Kgs GVW which puts it into the higher rate for taxing, I.e. exceeding 25tons is £410 but 25ton and under is £165. So I should imagine if you do the same and contact a spring company you would probably only have to take one leaf from the vehicle to bring it under the 25ton, after all you only have to lose 339kgs from the GVW.

    If Wikipedia is correct, it says that the width of a Stalwart is 2.62m wide. So VOSA by their own admission when I have called them will not test and plate as the vehicle is over width according to Construction an Use Regulations.

     

    Perhaps people have registered it as a Special Types vehicle as you would do a Faun SLT tractor unit as this is 3.2m wide but over width is over width...

     

    This way it would exempt you from test and plate but in theory you would have to give teo days notice online via ESDAL to drive it!

Just received my V5C registration certificate for my Oshkosh M1070 (quick within 4 working days from DVLA) I just wanted to let people know that did not know that the type approval exemption for wreckers and heavy haulage is stopping. From Wed 29th Oct 2014 vehicles designed to carry an abnormal indivisible load and road recovery vehicles over 12 tonnes will be subjected to type approval before registration.

     

    From 29 Oct DVLA will expect to see an ec coc, nssta coc, or iva

     

    EC COC is European community certificate of conformity

     

     

    NSSTA COC is UK national small series type approval certificate of conformity

     

     

    IVA is individual vehicle approval

     

     

    So if you have a Foden wrecker or heavy haulage truck that is not age exempt now is the time to register it, as as usual things are only getting harder to do!

     

     

    I have read that this means that heavy haulage vehicles with a big pin tow hook on the front bumper used for pulling/pushing trailers or braking will have to have rounded covers over them! So now we can expect to see nice fluffy environmentally pink heavy haulage vehicles....

    I was asked by someone I know in Belgium if they would have to pay the Hgv levy charge for an M series 5 ton they are bring over and driving on UK roads. The website says all hgv of 12 ton and over on their revenue weight have to pay.

     

    I called the dvla and vosa which enforce it and 5 phone numbers later I finally got the right contact number which is 0330 101 3725! This is Hgv levy section, even has it in different languages, the guy I spoke to said they have never been asked the question before about collector/vintage HGVs. He said he would get back to me (I thought this was a get rid of me answer but called back in 5 minutes!) if the vechile is not licensed / registered as a goods vehicle in its home registered country and is not carrying goods for sale it does not have to pay the charge.

     

    Guess this is only of interest to non uk military vechile owners coming over to UK.

  10. hi the gaa hull is at natural advantage for a v8 Detroit and rad is there also what cooling fans did you use ie driven from engine or electric what clutch did you use was it a pto clutch and bell housing? what hp and touque was the v8 Detroit? the v6 92 my fit will try to get engine sizes but again the gaa hull does have a cut out in the bulk head for some of the clutch bell housing but I am with you Detroit all the way sound good on song.

    I have been asked a couple of times what would be a good diesel conversion for a radial powered Sherman that does not involve cutting the bulkhead or any of the rear armour as in, if you have a radial engine you could put the engine back in with not much of a problem.

     

    I have seen and worked on a few conversions and I would not say that any have met the above criteria, i.e have had bulkheads cut out, overheating problems...

     

    So I was wondering if anyone out there has or has had a successful diesel conversion? If you have please can you let me know some details, what engine, how you have done the cooling system if liquid cooled etc.

     

    Out of interest any diesel converted Sherman regardless of hull would be interesting to know about what engine choice and how it performs.

     

    I have included pics of the engine bay of the M4A1 radial.
