  1. I am looking for the following - hoping someone here has one in any condition (ideally mint unissued of course) which they would be happy to sell to me - this is probably best described as Battery Selector Unit with inbuilt test meter... this is the item to the right of the Variometer (centre of colour pic).

From a discussion with Adrian B (thanks Adrian), I understand that the purpose of this switch is to allow the Wireless Operator to choose the 12v battery from which to run the Wireless set... the meter allows them to test the battery to see which is best... avoids draining one battery down too far.

The attached pics show the unit fitted inside Bovington's Sherman Firefly - Photos copyright to Bovington Tank Museum.

This differs slightly in design according to tank and manufacturer - so am happy to consider anything similar if not exactly the same.

    Many thanks

  2. lol i broke the news to the other half after i'd bought them, she was horrified at first thinking i'd blown a £100k again but she was fine once i told her they weren't far off scrap value. she has now inadvertently given me the green light to buy as many tanks as i want as long as they are "bargains" :cool2:

i am now on the lookout for an early cent turret or 120mm gun. i quite like the idea of the qinetiq test bed tank doing the show circuit, i could polish the barrel and breach ring and maybe put some chrome wing mirrors and light bezels on it like the glitzy ferret that comes back up for sale now and again on ebay.

    What better use for £100k!

I will look out for some scrap tanks for you.

  3. Am looking for the following items please if anyone has them for sale:

    5 x Stave, Intermediate, No 2, 17 pdr. Mk1

    1 x Stave, End, No 72, Mk1

Sorry - I don't have photos of these... though if anyone does have photos and can post, so I know what I am looking for, even if you're not selling, then that would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

  4. Excellent work and very informative for those of us mucking about trying to get old 19sets working. I changed the old mechanical vibrator on my PSU for a more reliable electronic one or should I say I sent the old unit off to someone more intelligent than myself and they did the work for me for £15. When I get back from holiday I can dig out the contact details for anyone that's interested

    Rick

    That would be excellent thanks.

    Cheers

  5. Hi Andy,

This company transported some vehicles down to W&P last week, http://www.nicksampson.com/ They are from Barnstaple. No connection, but saw them unload and reload, remembered where they came from.

I've used Nick Sampson - as you say, Barnstaple firm - found them to be good and reliable - happy to recommend them from experience.

  6. During a sort-out I came across this picture of my sister back in February 1974. I'd be interested if anyone knows more about the vehicle in question; the photo was probably shot somewhere in Devon (Plasterdown Camp?), where is it now?

I thought Plasterdown was the location of a Field Hospital just outside Tavistock.

Is it more likely to have been Okehampton camp, or somewhere on the North Dartmoor ranges?

  7. Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

Tim - I see that there is an event at Buckfastleigh on the 2-3 July,I will try and get to that one. Also I see that there is one at Honiton Hill- I will definitely make that one as I have entered 2 of my Tiny Tims there - so I might see you walking down the engine lines - you will easily recognise my entries!

    All the best,

    Kev.

I should be at the Buckfastleigh event - all things being well, I will have a White Scout Car with me.

I don't display the charging sets - they are just accessories for my vehicles.

    See you there

  8. Hi Guys,

I am Kev from South Devon.I am not a military man, although my father was in the Cheshire Yeomanry( which was I believe the last British Regiment to fight on horses) in WW2 and went out to Palestine as a Cavalry man and incidentaly later fought at Cassino, Italy- which I am sure you military historian guys will know all about! My interest is in WW2 military charging sets - I currently have,in various states of restoration, - a Pincor ( Chore Horse type), 3 Tiny Tims,an 80Watt lightweight charging set, and an Alco featherweight accumulator charging set.I hope to learn more about their war time uses as time goes by.

    All the best,

    Kev.

    Kev

    Welcome.

    I don't collect Charging sets... but do have 1 x 80w, 1 x 300w and 1 x Alco Sirius sets (SOE type).

Perhaps see you at one of the Devon Military Vehicle Trust meetings - you don't need to have a vehicle and will meet a load of like minded enthusiasts.

    Cheers

  9. Have a 30cal deact... cycle works fine - had considered stripping it out of curiosity more than anything else... will give it a miss for the time being until sure I've found my safety goggles and someone who is experienced in putting it all back together.

    Useful thread - thanks.

    Cheers

  10. No one let us down - far from it. Sadly we had a death, health issues, maintenance issues and two being sold. Those owners that could make it still came with other vehicles, god bless them :-)

I hoped to go, but getting married the weekend before resulted with a change in plans - the other half not keen to have this as a honeymoon... a pity, as I had been looking forward to it.

Life unfortunately often gets in the way of what we would like to do - perhaps next time I will get there with the WSC... or perhaps something larger if it's finished.

All reports are I missed an exceptional event and I can only hope that the organisation team are prepared to do it again soon.

A huge level of support and coordination to achieve a great result... may be next time, a second camp for the British and Commonwealth units ;-)

    Congratulations to all those involved.

  11. the problem with the Burma Spitfires is that story never made any sense to begin with. Brand new, as well as used, aircraft after the war were sold to various countries who then used them to have more little wars. There's very few cases where equipment was dumped or buried, and even then it wasn't something as valuable as aircraft ( except for the Saigon evacuation and that was to make room for refugee's).

Except for all those dumped off the side of Aircraft carriers at the end of the war?
