yes and yes but i need to do a recce and then arrange for a survey

Not sure getting permission to dig will be so easy... I can see the locals not being too happy with you wanting to excavate a large hole in the side of their flood defences... especially given what happened last time there was a hole!

    Good luck though!

  2. Am looking for this Engine "Emergency Stop" button assembly for my Firefly restoration.

I understand this is a British Army modification - not a standard Sherman part - so may well be straight off some industrial plant equipment used at the time, rather than specifically a tank part.

Any unit in any condition would be excellent - or loan of one to consider having it copied.

Please send me a PM if you have anything which may be suitable.

    Cheers

  3. They decreed a number of 98 individual toilets for the size of venue (I've no idea how they work it out?) As it happens there are 130 toilets on site.

Having worked on running events before... Try these links...

    http://www.andyloos.co.uk/calc/calc.php

Both appear to indicate the event has been calculated to serve around 10,000 to 15,000 people total in attendance... exhibitors and paying public... given that there will be a different calculation for exhibitors than paying public.

How many exhibitors and paying public are there at site on a daily basis?

  4. Looks ok - immediate observations compared to my 1940 dated one - none are massive issues though IMO (though have never seen these repro tents other than in photos).

Canvas too dark - Mine canvas is light brown colour, but then tarred on the outside to make it darker (later war though canvas was made in the darker colour)

Only one "door" - Mine has a door at both ends (convenient to be able to change the end you want to leave the tent from)

Poles - Mine has two piece upright poles as well as a two piece ridge pole (easily rectified if you need to)

Closure - Mine has an overlap with metal hooks rather than the lace and eye arrangement (however when wet and the canvas shrinks, it can be hard to open mine, so the lace and eye arrangement might be better).

Over all, have often wished mine was 7x7... the officer's camp bed is 6x6 and therefore very snug fit with the ends of the tent... but, great tent and very happy with the many years I've used it.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Hasn't any kind of DIY event these days been spoilt by the need for Public Liability Insurance? And forgetting PLI for a moment even a members only meeting would need some form of Health & Safety plan and a briefing for paricipents, plus some reasonable steps to stop owners of a tank (for example) driving over people sleeping in their tents. Then there is the issue of who would take the time off work to set up the area to be used which might take more than a few days and the same to clear up afterwards; would it be the same people year after year giving up their time for others. And thats before toilets and showers have been considered!

Not so hard to arrange. Have run private WW2 battles before. Yes you need suitable place, PLI, H&S Risk Assessment, notify Police, sort out wrist bands, rules, timetable, toilets (if you want a Shower - get a B&B). Ensure book in advance - no on the day entries etc... ideally walking distance to a good pub with great food and an accommodating landlord. Possibly even a small website.

The above can be managed by a very small (last time I did one, there were two of us to set it all up and run it) - unless you are planning a cast of thousands.

It all changes though once you move away from Private members only event to inviting members of the public.

  6. Us tankies always said we would like to hold an event just for vehicle owners. Get the use of a training area such as SPTA or Borden and have a weekend playing. No road runs, just lots of off road. Huge BBQ and beer tent for the evenings!

    Sounds good to me!

  7. Years ago the Devon and Cornwall area used to run an event called the "Culmstock Field Meet"... this was a members only event.

I think the land was owned by a local farmer, I think we had use of a barn... and beyond that it was just camping in a field.

Road-Runs out with some green-lanes, and a bit of mud.

To arrange such an event - you just need to know someone with some land.

  8. The Royal Jordanian tank museum, I know it's been around but it was a private collection of the king? Not sure on the history but next year will open a public museum, huge facility telling the history of both Jordanian forces and also armored warfare. 40 minutes from the airport. We know they have some rare stuff, both German, UK, and American armor, but I bet there will be some surprises too . Rumors they might have gotten some of the panzer IV's from the Golan?

Anyway, I think this is an as-yet unknown Archer? any guess as to what's poking around behind it? Charioteer?

Surely something has a different paint job?

  9. Somewhere... will try to find it and post a photo... I have a "sealed pattern" rectangular flag which is 1940 dated and Labelled as "Flag, Distinguishing, Signals Headquarters"... or similar... as to how this was flown and when... my assumption is over the HQ vehicle/s when parked up somewhere.... rather than while driving.

  10. In the north of the netherlands that was liberated by the canadians there is a story that there must be a tank that is sunk in the moor ground overthere. Canadian soldiers were trading petrol against gin. They brought the petrol to a farm with a tank but it slid from a narrow road and started sinking. There are people there they a sure the tank is still there at a depth of 5 meters. Only proof are some pictures of the sinking tank. This is one of the pictures, i think it is the the second tank on the picture that is at an bad angle. The other seems sinking too. Only thing there is no evidance in the canadian archives of a missing tank. But the people in the north are testing the ground with a radar to proof that the tank still is there...
