Hi all I have managed to do a bit of cleaning up around the engine now and established that the original engine block colour is a pale grey ish, with a hint of something like blue or green :nut: as per the photo, but essentially a pale grey. I have also deduced that the white stenciled number I mentioned across the block is what appears to me to be the number '80'. Does anyone have any idea as to what this would be for please? The colour is prevelent all around the block in the grey so looks genuine and original.

  3. Mike There are some bargains to be found on ebay if you keep looking, and as long as you are a little patient. The series 3 109 FFR is a little more plentiful that my series 2a 88 FFR. I managed to get the radio cables for a Larkspur instalation on ebay with all the attachments, but it has taken me a couple of years. Mine too had been gutted of a lot of details since demob in 1971 and the PO's! I know that there are a few wiring looms appearing on ebay, so I guess that old ser 3 109 FFR's are being canabalised and parts sold off. Do you have the user handbook for the 109 FFR? Reproduced copies are available on the internet. The EMLRA is a good base and a years membership is £17.50, which is good value. I used to have a ser 3 109 FFR and got my copy through C&S Tat on the EMLRA site. Regards

  5. Thanks Clive. Some parts are quite small and may be fed to them peacemeal. Would they not be too commercially biaised / too large for a little old restorer / enthusiast in Hereford. I guess a quick call would sort that out. Regards :-\
  6. Please see the image below, which is all that remains of the Terminal boxes for the radio batteries and charging circuit on the left hand side of the rear tub of my FFR Land Rover. The capacitors and cover boxes are all missing and long gone. Does anyone know of a similar part installed in other british FV's with FFW / FFR capability. Regards :???

Then post on I know the slam panel is not civi, but the again it is just a plate over the old bonnet catch detail. What are the subtle differences if any between the toastrack and suffix G panel? Cheers

  12. Something to read into as a bit of a falacy regarding the military engine / spec landrover having a 7 stud water pump! I guess it all depends on the engine, manufacture dates and changes in specs and contract numbers. It is all very fascinating though! Regards :laugh:
  13. I checked my Sankey last night and mine has the following details 18 FK61 Chassis No 70A Code No 2855 0790 CES 33984. As my Landy is an EK I guess the likelyhood of getting an EK OR FK Sankey was a miracle!:red:

  15. Thanks everyone, but I don't understand why one is properly pressed out and the other different. The PO did fit standard headlights and the FV ones were missing! However I have bought proper military light bezels etc and new bowls. Lined them up and they align with all fixing locations. They are the same diameter, but is appears on is a bastardised solution against a machined one. Must have been a fabrication issue surely?
  16. I know the engine is a Qualcast made block, but I guess that means nothing????? I will post the engine number and see if that helps identify. I know what you mean about the water pump query. I bought a 7 stud then had to send it back for exchange today. Should have took off first but I was told by some S2 rivet counter that all military 2286cc engines were 7 stud military pattern water pumps. He convinced me anyway :cry:
  17. Its exactly the same as mine. Does it have a hinged up / down support leg instead of a jockey wheel?
  18. :nut: If it went across to RAF or RN as a 24v FFR would that not mean it's livery would have changed also from deep bronze green? It appears the only way I will get to this is to start rubbing down through the 40 odd years of MOD and civi paint on the original panels I saved even though they are Kerry Packered! Your suggestion may be plausable and leads me into more ever decreasing circles mode. No wonder I am getting dizzy with the history on this vehicle. I must say though that I wish I had joined this forum years ago as I have uncovered so much with everyones help and knowledge. I never considered the other services at all! Do you have to join the series 2 club to get help with that on m8? Thanks in advance. Cheers
  19. I can just about remember when I was taught at school how to create a large gircular hole in wood and metal without a massive hole punch or circular cutter. You all know! When we drilled lots of holes around the circumference and then used a saw to cut through the holes. I noticed this more basic engineering method on the radiator panel of my series 2a FFR as per the attached image. As you can see the RHS is obviously a pressed out tooling, but the LHS has more of a DIY look about it. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is like this. I don't believe this to be a single headlighted Land Rover with a home made headlight aperture. But you never now. If this was done on the production line then a sense of urgency would have suggested such an intervention. Thoughts anyone :undecided:

  22. Clive the document that I have that is quite a volume is Q 022 April 1961 Land Rover All Marks. It starts with some data and images of a Rover 3. In addition I have the servicing schedule for Rover 1/4 to 3/4 Ton Army Code 60957, 57/TECH/5349 If any of these are of use please advise. The servicing schedule is easy to copy as an A5 booklet.   24. Richard that is very, helpful and explains quite a bit. Can you advise if it was normal to have some numbers in white on the manifold side of the engine block, using a stencil pattern? This may prove the engine is totally original. However there is one oddety with it that it has a standard 9 stud water pump. Did all Rover 2286cc petrol engines have 7 stud water pumps from day 1 or does the age of my engine pre-date that modification??? Spotted this last night when taking old pump off that was leaking.
