These might be of passing interest to some on here. The photos are from the personal collection of an ex-REME squaddie whose unit was attached to the Yanks a couple of times a year by way of providing bridge building services. Apparently the Yanks had the weapon but didn't have the expertise to get it across a gap :-) Copyright is owned by Ivan Baker, posted here with permission for personal viewing.

Sheffield Cathedral are staging an event to mark the anniversary of the start of the Sheffield Blitz on Saturday 12th December. The location is the Cathedral Forecourt. (The Blitz went from 12th to 15th Dec 1940) This follows a successful VE Day event earlier this year. They are particularly keen to attract appropriate vehicles such as NFS Units but are equally clear that any 'correct' UK based period vehicles will be welcome. Dressed for the occasion is welcomed but not obligatory. Contact for the event is Janet Ridler <Janet.Ridler@sheffield-cathedral.org.uk>

Wow, that was quick! Thanks a lot Richard. I guess there wont be many of those around , trucks or side screens :-)
-
I came across some parts labels that obviously came off some vehicle side-screens. Just nosey to find out about them so can anyone suggest a source for I.D.ing what they were on? Or maybe someone already has a list/book with them?
The larger label says '(CONTR?) VAUXHALL MOTORS LTD' next line 'CON NO 6/VEH/3168' rest of label illegible
smaller label '61BE 7064955' 'SCREEN SIDE ASSY. L/H' 'DOOR CREW COMPARTMENT'
second small label differs slightly '61BE 7064954' 'SCREEN R/H DOOR'
Just casual interest if anyone can help.

Highway Recovery used to operate out of Barnsley and they had red machines during the later of the time period Oshkosh refers to. I wasn't interested in MV's at the time so never took notice of what they had, other than they had a big selection of large vehicles, including what I took to be modern Yank machines. Maybe some were older?

Sorted.

Not a vehicle question but someone on here just might have a better idea than me :-) These are stills taken from a film, possibly made by a member of the army officially/unofficially?. Sorry about the quality but these are the best stills that could currently be extracted. It was filmed in the 50's or 60's - fixing the date is one main question. The troops are York and Lancaster Regiment. The film shows British and then foreign troops disembarking from a train, unloading the crates of 'bazooka' rounds (I'm guessing that is what they are, given one bloke is carrying two launchers over his shoulder) Identifying the foreign troops might help fix where and when. My guess from the trees etc and railway carriage in the background of one shot is it is Suez and the foreign troops are French. If it had been a loading job then it could have been maybe Danish helping them. Anyhow, open to suggestions.
An archive is wanting to get a better idea of what is happening on the film.

Thanks for that very helpful reply Clive. All I needed and more! :-)

The only mention that I can recall of AA signs was on MLU, but it related to what seems to be a later period than depicted in the film which I think I'd date as 1941/42 ?
Although the film opening states the gun was there from 40 to 45, one other source suggests it was removed as early as '42, maybe early 43?

Title says it all, was there a standard mesh size for WW2 British camo nets?

Thanks for the suggestions Ivor, much appreciated. Having had a similar predicament with the Formation sign I have spent a long time with enlarged screen shots of the vehicles and the badges on the uniforms. I came to the conclusion they are a variation on the 2nd AA Div 'witch'. As per here, in fairness it may have lost a bit of clarity in the switching from one bit of software to another.
You can of course take a look at the whole short film I took it from here -
http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/hunshelf-gun-site
and try and extract some images fro yourself. The 'witch' is, I feel, clearer on one of the other views of the Bedford MW. I am of course very happy to stand being corrected. All part of the learning! A very nice little bit of film in its own right.

Frank at Pegasus-Drive does top quality stuff, he might be able to make you one.

Nice to see that vid is of the British 30 Corps event, rather than the other 'Yank'- we won the war circus.

Gary,
my BSA M20 costs me £88 per year with Cherished Vehicle insurance (advertised in MVT magazine).
Dave
I'd back Dave on this one. been with Carole Nash and Bikesure/Adrian flux, both of which were excellent but Cherished Vehicle offer the same cover at a cheaper rate. I forget just what I paid this year for my bike but it was on the lines of what Dave paid. Plus they included agreed value for the simple task of submitting photos, no charge. Cherished Vehicle advertise on this site and you need to quote that you are a member of the forum as this will qualify you for a discount. I have found them very good to deal with so far.

If you are referring to the WW2 'arm of service' strips then it is the other way round. Blue to the front for RE, red to the front is artillery.

Hi Jack,
I don't know. The name on the email is Linda Tessin !!
I've come across that name being used with an ebay scam for non existent motorcycles.
-
My guess is it is floating on top of a shipping container
I'd agree it is on top of some slightly awash raft type item, but cant see any signs of a tow rope. Notable lack of the 'usual' markings and the all white(?) roof. Bonnet flaps appear to be opened up too.

Scammel Explorer (?) in service in 50's Germany

These in-service shots might be of interest? A few photos from the personal collection of Ivan Baker who served in REME in the mid-late 50's. Scammels are the connecting theme for these three.

I wonder if this one survived?
