  1. great photo richard i never realized C&C were such an old company.all info of the day points at daimler lorrys from guinness. BUT only 3 were armoured at the railway works and are well documented. there may have been more (possibly three) 2 of which were armoured at guinness and a 3rd in a local engineering shop. although writings of the day just refer to them as armoured motors lorry. any chance you could ID the lorry in this 1922 photo . . http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000236792
  2. two excellent books mentioned on the thread karl martin & david dunne. more NC reg.. NC 1211 dublin 2,2,1921 and a earlier photo of IK 2705 (elsie)with its original mudguards 1,11,1920 http://www.gettyimages.ie/Search/Search.aspx?contractUrl=2&language=en-GB&assetType=image&p=80747906
  3. yes richard i think you probably correct.
  4. very rare to see a photo of a lancia or any other vehicle of the time towing artillery. probably because there was very little artillery to be towed.
  5. thanks runflat there all irish civil war videos from 1922 with the odd 1920/21 bit added in for some reason. the armoured cars in the videos are armoured lancias. a very basic armoured box on wheels locally built on the british acquired right hand drive italian lancia chassis and unique to ireland and probably built by the same hands that built the 1916 guinness armoured cars in railway workshops. the lancia was also used to tow the 18pdr which fired the first official shot of the irish civil war at the four courts. the 18pounders in the photo/videos were maned by x ira men and not artillery men and had there sights removed before the british army handed them over which accounts for the holes in the river liffey wall. two rounds overshot and landed in the phoenex park near the then british army ghq. there is a armoured lancia in the videos/photo blocking the gate of the four courts put there by the national army to block in the ira 1920 pattern rolls royce armoured car called the (mutineer) which had left the four courts several times and gave concern to the national army..
  6. I think there is probably more of these rolls royce armoured car around today than there was in 1918
  7. thanks richard thats a nice bit of info just the kind of stuf im looking for. I could find very little info on the lancias stil with armour or restored back to a armoured car. i think i mite have a photo of that civvy lancia but because its privately owned i'll pm it to you rather than upload it. let me know if its the same one .
  8. A very interesting project,,, well done
  9. sounds like you had a great trip and the weather not too bad this year round, being a local man the weekend of the gordan bennett brings some fantastis rare sights & sounds, well done and thanks for posting,, one of the stores the lads in the curragh may have told you about the rolls royce a/c slievenamon was when michael collins was been driven around dublin in 1922 a shot hit the turret as they drove over a canal bridge collins turned to his then driver (paddy lynch) and said ""be jasus paddy they"ll get me yet"". to bring out the irish sence of humor i entered you in the guinness book of records as the only british military crossley that done 450 miles in ireland without breaking an axle or getting shot at......
  10. lovly well done,, she looks great,, is she a film star from the 90s along with a 2nd crossley a nash quad and a albion among other vehicle..
  11. thanks gwt, she's a breuty i would love to know what that information board says,, the raf in iraqi in the early 20s used at least one armoured lancia ,,h.m.a.c. kennelworth
  12. looking for photos/info on the armoured lancia outside of ireland, theres one in a museum in italy with 17th battalion markings on it anyone know the histroy to that one or any info at all. http://the.shadock.free.fr/Surviving_British_Early_Armoured_Cars.pdf
  13. book,, ambushes and armour the irish rebellian ( wh kautt) 1919-1921, has a short referance to a ford armoured car of which one hundred were order in 1920 trials were concucted in november 1920 by the royal arsenal at woolwich along with representatives of the 5th armoured car company the trails clearly showed the fords were most unsuitable for service in ireland and the armour plating was not even bullet proof, under desperation the cars were order anyway..the book give a sketch of the car which looks a lot like the locker lampson armoured ford used in russian 1916/17 { as mention by steveo578 } thats the only referance i have ever came across of a ford ,,ARMOURED,, car in ireland (so far)
  14. this one was on display by the irish army today at a military vehicle show in co kildare

  17. im thinking maybe EE 5220 was first built in 1924 as a armoured car that served in jorden in 1924 i think the chassis may have been rebuilt as a earlier model for the film but to be honest i dont really know, the fact thats it is a rolls royce a/c im sure someone may put me right... i found the photos side by side on a web page that said the car had changed several times in it life...
