  1. Thanks for the help! I might pop into Halfords before I buy one and have a look at the 096 and give it a quick measure.

    Simon.

    Only LOOK in Halfrauds !!!

Plenty of places that are better value, you just need to decide if to buy cheapest and replace after 3-4 years or better quality.

Last year I bought a large car battery half the price of Halfrauds from Alpha-Products

    http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/alpha-products-man/?_trksid=p4340.l2559

067 is same size as 096 but lower capacity / CCA

while this seller offering lifetime guarantee....if still around in 5 years time of course and your MUTT would qualify

  2. Hi,

This summer I wanted to raise a bit of money for Help for Heroes. My plan was to bring my DUKW to a show I've been invited to and give kids rides in the back around the field. This unfortunately raises insurance proplems my brokers told me).

1). If a kid trips on the bangs their head ( if I'm showing the vehicle while it's static) my road insurance won't cover me (they said).

2). I can carry kids for free as the field temporarily comes under the Highways act (they said) for the duration of the show BUT if I charge people it is for 'Hire & reward' and the personal, social & domestic insurnce won't cover it. (I daren't even think about driving licence classes).

I've rang around insurance companies and nobody would touch it.

Does anyone have any ideas who would cover the vehicle?

    Thanks

    Don

    I can't comment on injuries.

Even if you had a disclaimer notice would it be legal, maybe ask a solicitor if you have any contacts.

As to rides never charge just ask for a donation.

Again I can't comment if any legal implications nor recall exact wording but I have seen several suggesting a minimum amount.

  3. ..... the other significant difference is that the work and mobile PCs are running XP Pro and XP Home editions of the OS respectively, the home PC is running 2000 Pro. In all cases I am using the latest available version of Firefox (I haven't tried using IE to see if that makes a difference, must try that). The home PC is older and slower than the others, but not by that much.

I am also a member of various other forums which all work fine; this only happens with HMVF. All other webpages I have visited seem ok too.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? It's a pain because it is completely impractical to access this forum from home at the moment.

    Thanks.

I am replying using a HP Laptop which is P3 1GHz 512MB ram with a PCMCIA wifi card running Windows 2000 SP4 and the lastest version of Firefox.

It is not really fast enough for video but is fine browsing websites and forums, checking email, eBay etc.

I keep my main desktop PC running XP SP2 offline minimising risk of viruses.

  4. I just saw this on another site but see others have beaten me in starting a thread.

I feel for the guy but agree without guards it looks lethal to inquisitive children, not to mention himself should he slip off his seat.

Certainly to use in any place where the public might be even if private land he needs adequate insurance.

However needing a license for a vehicle that has 3.8mph max speed is ridiculous.

As to noise on a beach hopefully he would be considerate and use simply to reach the tideline but not drive about all day.

The same applies to use only in appropriate open locations.

I guess he has a more appropriate scooter for town centres etc.

  5. This is the first time I have been able to access the site, never mind try to log in, for a week.

Also this is my third attempt to post this message.

The first time I hit reply and got the http://www.pathfinderservices.com can not be found screen again.

So I took the opportunity to grab it to post.

Second time when I hit submit reply I was back to the screen again.

  6. Thanks for the advice, but I already tried this, hence my question about Windows7. I can't re-install XP as the PC came with it already loaded and I don't have a disc. As my PC is now about 5 or 6 years old, I think looking around in the January sales for a good deal might be my best way out as Mike65 has suggested.

Many thanks to you all for your advice.

If you never had CD's either there is a recovery partition / application on the hard drive or there are installation CD images ready to burn on the hard drive - legally some method of recovery must have been supplied.

In any case so long as you have the XP label with the 25 character key and it is readable you can re-install with any unbranded XP home CD of the same level e.g. with SP1, SP2, SP3.

If originally SP1 or SP2 any CD that is not SP3 will probably accept the key.

Ask around - if you get stuck I have a couple I have used to get people out of trouble but need to check versions.

You will also need to download your drivers and antivirus software (eg avast) and firewall (eg Comodo) and store on a CD or USB memory (virus free of course) before you start.

I have met this print spooler issue as a result of a virus, I recall a repair patch exists but a good chance you have other corruption too.

After 5-6 years a re-install is a good idea anyway.

As others have posted at best Windows 7 on a 5-6 year old PC will be disappointing.

  7. Are you using the lower login box? that's the one that works properly..

    login.jpg

I have always used to login at top right and actually had not noticed the lower one until you posted this screen capture.

Using Firefox I have had no problems with the top box.

  8. IE = problems + easiest entry route for viruses etc since it is an integral part of Windows.

Your preferred choice of Firefox, Opera etc much safer as relatively stand-alone applications.

  9. As suggested by Mike65 CutePDF writer is the best of the free ones I have used that work like a printer.

There is an application, I can't recall the name now but can look at work, that will split and combine PDF files if that helps at all.

For a manual if more than a few pages as suggested by Stone if you can find someone with a scanner / all-in-one office machine that will directly output a PDF file that is your best option - even if it costs you a few pints !

  10. Are we getting confused here :???

I don't know the current situation but all engines were in place and run up on the Coventry Shackleton at the last air show.

    Vipers too??

Please correct me if wrong but AFAIK since WR963 is a MR2 / AEW2 it never had vipers fitted and that is why it survives and is currently being returned to flying condition - Note this does not mean it will fly again not least because CAA may never give approval. It is no longer owned by Air Atlantique but ASCET.

It was the MR3's that had the Vipers due to additional weight of equipment and these were withdrawn much earlier because spars had all reached their stresslife limit due to the increased weight.

  11. I don't think the one at Coventry is ground run as engines removed, think you mean the one at nearby Wellesbourne XM655 which is run annually and last year their was a surprise treat with XH558 doing a display as way of thanks to their team for all their work. And that was fantastic.

  12. Yes OK. But the worry is now it doesn't look as if I can boot from USB.

So although I might have the files cloned & saved, I won't be able to get at the OS. So perhaps I should fit an internal second HD & pull plugs to make it boot from that if the need arises. Bit messy though, USB would have been nicer!

    Dscf1781.jpg

To boot from USB Hard Drive connect the drive and if required separate power supply then boot the computer, enter the BIOS and go to this screen.

    Press enter on

    Hard Disk Boot Priority

All the drives the BIOS can see will be listed

Move the one you want to boot from to the top of the list

Save settings, exit BIOS and let the system boot ....... hopefully

  13. Went into the local tractor place today and the 663/4 work out about £50 each. They do a 900 cold crank battery for £60 ish and a MONSTER Caterpillar battery which claims 900 cold crank but has been tested at more like 1200 amps. They can keep this at £100 each though!

All those batteries sound like a bargain if good quality.

Comparing a car / van engine to what ever lump is in your explorer that may well not get started for a while so need some churning to get fuel in the right places I would spend the extra on the larger 900A cold crank batteries.

Off topic but I have just replaced my car battery. The last one was Ducellier branded 4 year warranty and now only 3 months over that :-(

The car is 1.9TDi but a big battery size 110 (720A cold crank and 70AH capacity). My last car was 1.8TD but had a much smaller / cheaper battery - size 065 I recall which had ample starting power.

Halfrauds price for a 110 is now £119 with 3 year warranty and best I could find within 30 mile round trip to collect was £75.

I found Alpha Batteries in Rochdale and that their prices are better on eBay. OK the battery is not branded but I paid £54 delivered and it has a 4 year warranty.

The battery was sent yesterday, delivered early afternoon today and now fitted - not a 10 minute job as the battery is at the back of the engine bay and plastic covers have to be removed for replacement.

  14. weather permitting i am doing a road run out of s.e davis yard on new years day

    nick

Nick, Have fun if the Road Run goes ahead. Looks like there could be significant snow which would not bother you but could be too risky for others.

How many are hoping to take part, what route is planned and what times?

Depending on weather, roads and other arrangements it could be worth a drive out with my cameras.

    David.

  15. hi david

    Hi Nick,

I saw Floyd at Astwood Bank this year too, but only recently found this forum so didn't know it was your first outing.

    David

  16. I enjoy visiting vehicle rallies and particularly those that have a good ex-military vehicle section like Bloxham, Kemble and Welland. The ring displays by the ex-military owners are always interesting, for example Bloxham always attracts several Scammell Explorers.

The posts here giving vehicle histories and restoration details and progress are interesting.
