We seem to be slowing down a bit. It is getting harder and harder to motivate oneself to go out in the shed of an evening after work. Getting old I think!

    Steve  🙂

I have this 'problem' even though not tackling anything like you are never mind the main work being far from home.

With realistically the GDSF finished and maybe other events you attended in the past too I guess less incentive to be finished for a specific date.

I don't recall ever being asked for proof of ID, except for the phone number. But that was under the old Facebook, not the current owner - Meta.

My experience was several years ago, maybe 2016 - 2017.

Based on what numerous people have said those who joined further back in time and have not attracted the attention of human or AI moderators have not subsequently been asked for ID.

I'm intrigued. Why do you think Facebook wants a copy of your birth certificate?

Proof of ID, age I presume. I can't recall if they also wanted something with address. I did not send so they closed / locked the account . I requested my record but they never sent.

For some Facebook pages at the the latest few entries can be viewed without  logging in. For others none. The latter total understandable if individual but not if a business, museum or similar.

  4. I have just looked and I have the HMVF New (Default) theme.

Using Firefox and Ublock Origin I have never seen any adverts on HMVF except the Allied Forces at the top of the screen.

This is on a PC running Debian Linux but Firefox on a Windows platform ought to be the same.

I never use a smartphone for anything not absolutely essential when no PC access - too hard to see and type on.

  5. Silver solder has a significantly higher melting temperature than 60/40 tin lead. Even if you have an iron with adjustable temperature it may well not go hot enough for silver solder.

For now using 60/40 tin lead would prove you have found the problem. Then for reliability source a replacement.

Alternatively source a small crimp jointing tube but before joining the ends with it also slide over some small high temperature insulation sleeving. Once crimped slide this over the tube so it will not touch adjacent windings.

Certainly ours looks like one of the Metamet "Saloon" Jeeps!  Thanks for posting.  Dad swapped the Jeep for an A35 Austin for a while until along came a green Series 1 Land Rover soft top!  We used to play at "soldiers" in it - probably sowed the seeds for my MV addiction!

I presume then you had moved on to a static residence !

As I recall, there was a half-way house for indicators with a kit which could enable the side and tail/brake lights to be flashed - there had to be a visible flashing lamp on the dashboard.  My father had such a set-up on his 1954 Hillman Husky.  I don't know if it is still the case, but it meant that, for a very long time, indicators could be amber or white at the front and amber or red at the back.  I think the same applied, though for longer, in the USA where the amber indicators took longer to become popular.

OT but interesting as I never knew this. I though that in the UK trafficators be they semaphore with a static lamp or flashing lamps has to be orange.

You can bet no answer to this will be cheap and the tax gap will be filled somehow.  But why are we planning to go electric everything ? Because of lots of powerful lobyists that will cash in on it.   There are alternatives, such as hydrogen combustion.  Ask JCB they have developed from scratch a hydrogen engine as electric power is not viable in heavy plant etc.

For hydrogen the first issue is the production, distribution and storage in the quantities required. If the energy source is not green or using a fossil there not is a step reduction in the CO2 and other pollutants produced compared to running a diesel engine one source of CO2 is simply being swapped for another. The second issue is the cost.

.... As Ruxy comments, Sunak's postponement of the ban on new fossil-fuelled cars is essentially required because there is no way the country would be ready for that many electric cars.  The investment in charging infrastructure s non-existent and there is no credible energy plan that will allow loss of hydrocarbon fuels to be offset by electricity generation.  So he is just kicking the can down the road because really they have not a clue - and neither does any other political party!

On a more practical note, I am on my second Toyota-system hybrid auto and they are just brilliant -  a very sensible use of inboard electricity generation, a lot of technology drawn from F1........we currently run a 2 tonne 3.5L hybrid car that does 50 mpg on the motorway and 70 mpg in town!  So there's certainly room for sensible adoption of new technologies.  Alas, we are driven by politics and politicians it seems.

If major investment on infrastructure had been started when the 2030 ban was announced it may have been achievable. Another factor is there is not even a plan never mind implementation to replace the income to the government / treasury from diesel and petrol duty. VAT at public EV chargers is 20% while unless it can be separated from all other use 5% from home / private charging.

    The Toyota technology seems good.

Adblocker seemed to resolve the issue to a tolerable level when browsing from my "real" PC, but there are (apparently) no similar advertisement blockers for Android phones browsing with Chrome, so access from my phone remained unbearable.

I do not use Chrome at all. I have read that Google are blocking/disabling all adblock plug-ins / extensions.

On both PC ( Linux or Windows ) and Android phone I use Firefox. I add the Ublock Origin extension. From the default I also activate Annoyances >  Easylist Cookie Notices. I also have the Google Cookie Consent Pop-up blocker. I do not directly use Google as my search engine but indirectly by using Startpage as my home page.

I only browse HMVF on my PC and have been totally unaware of any problem. There is the Adrian Flux or Allied Forces Ltd advert neat the top of the page, nothing else.

I’ve dissembled the unit and C is clearly earth. A goes to the switch. B goes to the bulb. Any thoughts which is live? Consensus seems to be that B is usually the live pin, but there appear to be different protocols. Any thoughts? I’ll be wiring it permanently to a plug.

Commercially if the switch is single pole conventionally Live > fuse / circuit breaker > switch > bulb ( or whatever the load is ) > Neutral.

Generally I concur with the posts above for the Plessey or any other connector to as an absolute minimum label to disconnect the supply before separating the connector and better still lock in some way that requires tools to separate.

Additional safety would be an earth connection to the metal case independent of the mains input plug / socket.

With the UK and now EU banning new Petrol Cars from 2030/2035 in order to 'save the world' logic tells me that right or wrong that the sale of Petrol itself will become less common, and like the time leaded fuel was 'banned' first there was a few garages that stocked leaded fuel, then there were none. Now we have E5 and E10 but E5 pumps are often locked as out of stock.

You can argue all you like over the futility of Net Zero, that diesel will /won't always be needed for heavy vehicles or that reduction of Co2 isn't going alter the climate one bit! But the reality is that politicians have to be seen to be green to get their votes, and Petrol will disappear in the near future, the very near future whether we like it or not.

It must be an age thing; I remember MV shows from 1978-1980s like they were yesterday, Beltring from the early 'noughties' and it wont be long for 10 years to wizz by!

I guess we need to save for a museum to hold the best of our military vehicle history, otherwise what was once 'grandpa's pride and joy will be crushed and on its way to a furnace in China!

The hundredth anniversary of D-Day won't include a host of working Jeeps etc, and instead a host of young people in EVs explaining how evil the British, Canadian and American troops were in making so much noise and smoke, and destruction when they landed!

    Pessimistic or what?

NB - I am told that petrol is produced, as a part of the refinery process for oil, which produces far more than just fuel or plastics, but I somehow doubt the oil companies will be shouting "come and get your free petrol" that they can't dispose of!

I wonder if oil can be refined for diesel and plastics without producing petrol? If not while I am 100% sure the oil companies will not be shouting "come and get your free petrol" how will it be used? Aviation and/or shipping fuel?

Safe storage is a problem plus we know it deteriorates in storage. Diesel is safer to store plus I see there will always be a limited commercial market for back up generators and maybe vehicles. For military I can not see a green alternative to diesel. If hypothetically there were electric vehicles there would have to be field charging stations and if not diesel how would they be powered? Hence no benefit against putting diesel directly in the vehicle.

If not 2044 by say 2050 I can see all petrol vehicles being reduced to a static exhibit.

The 7.50 dimension does not apply to the tread width but the maximum tyre width when inflated on the recommended width rim. There is quite a variation between makes, a Pirelli tyre we sell in a 225/40 R18 size is almost exactly 225mm in width but the same size Bridgestone is almost 245mm.

Interesting ......  I would not have expected a significant difference at least from the major brands. For Chinese, Korean etc 'Ditchfinders' then less surprising.

A neighbour bought a SUV just over 12 months ago. The dealer had fitted two Khumo tyres. My neighbour has just had 4 new Michelin Cross-climate fitted and was hoping to sell the two Khumo. However they were already cracking ....

    Hi

I am afraid it is not as simple as that

From the circuit diagram of the Power Supply, it looks like the radio needs [You will need to double check these before powering up the radio]

    Pin A     0V Common Ground

    Pin B     +1.4V DC

    Pin C     6.3V AC

    Pin D     +250V DC

    Pin E      +100V DC

    Pin F      19V DC

    Pin G     6.3V AC

    Pin H     0V Common Ground

    Pin J      +19V DC

    Pin K      6.3V AC

    Pin L      No Connection

    Pin M    No Connection

Might be easier to find a matching power supply

    Cheers

    Richard

    For the AC presumably a specific frequency too e.g. 50Hz, 60Hz, 400Hz.

If not 50Hz for e.g. the UK a transformer from the mains would not suffice. Likewise for e.g. USA 60Hz.

A dozen isn't going to be much help on the battlefield, but it is a game changer in terms of optics and commitment, a major western military sending modern MBT.  Hopefully there will be more to come.  US is (finally) coming up with some Bradleys.  Like the UK and the Challenger 2, 50 is just a token compared to what is needed.  Unlike the UK the US could easily send thousands of Bradleys (and Abrams for that matter) without really drawing down forces all that much.

Seems like the yanks are going back to being late for every war, sorry about that.

The balance between the numbers that the UK and USA at least initially send and Putin not upping his game by several gears ?? At one extreme, admittedly unlikely, Putin may think again about what he is doing. At the other more can be drip fed in potentially without the same psychological effect as one large batch.
