  1. Sorry if this has been said before, but i've looked and can not find anything.

Anyway my question, my friend is restoring a stalwart, it was sat in a wood for 8 or 9 years, its completely rusted but he is re making all the bits (i will have to get him to post pictures in the restoration section)

The chassis plate and data plate are missing or rusted off (trophy hunters probably)

But on the windscreen if you stand and look in a certain direction to catch the light, you can make out the outline of the reg number that must have been painted on the screen.

So my question is, with this army number, is it possible to find out the chassis number? Does anyone have a list of vehicle numbers and data, like a registry perhaps.

Any idea's and help is much appretiated.

    Thanks in advance

    Shaun :D

  2. What do you mean by repair them?

Rebuild them with a rebuild kit, or actually repair broken parts?

What have you done about rebuild kits? Going to fork out for the russian kits, or pattern ones, or you wanting someone to make them?

Put some pictures up of them, (i can do them if you want to bring them to belgium) :D

  3. Sorry Steve, I missunderstood, I thought it was your job, but hey, great part time job/hobby anyway :D

It's good to see some go on for restoration, or for spares, but like you say if there at the point where there useless then scrapping is the only way. (I wouldn't turn down more stolly spares, wink, wink, nod nod) :D

But great thread, thanks for pictures

    Sad about the pilot,

    Thanks

  4. Cheers steveo,

Will look forward to the stalely pictures.

So how do the army decide when to change/scrap the targets? Is it once there blown to pieces or age?

And then do they scrap them (melt them down) or do they sell them on?

You have a good job, for someone who's into vehicles, I think most of us in this hobby would love that job, although I think sometimes it could be sad seeing the way they go to waste!

  5. Or you could do a white UN colour sceme or what about doing a BP oil's colour sceme, I've never seen one of those in the flesh, although I think they only used mk1's

As for one's seeing active service in gulf 1, as far as I am aware only the one I mentioned earlier 91 ET 34 was prepped for gulf but was then replaced with a Bedford.

  6. Great thread, the first Saladin picture, I can see many stollies in background (I want to cry) I have couple of photo's of stollies on range at catterick, completely waisted.

It is sad to see them (any vehicle) end up like this.

Are there many stollies still on the range?

    Keep pictures coming.

    Thanks

  7. thanks jchinuk, i found that link also, i showed it to him, for that price he wants to make it himself, (i think it would take some of the hassle out of it)

will, saw your kubel, looks good. i think that's the sort of thing my friend wants to end up with, had a look at your sdkfz replica, very nice, (i have a old land rover sat in yard, perhaps another sdkfz to go with the kubel!!) :-D

    thanks

  8. Firstly, sorry if this is in wrong place, and also if its on here somewhere else, but i have been searching and so far not found anything.

    So hi all,

my friend is now getting into the military hobby, he is interested in ww2, and is keen on re-enacting the german theme, he has uniform's, guns etc, and a "ural" in german colours.

and now wants to build a kubel replica, so my question is, does anyone know of any good sources or links for a kubel replica, i read the thread where the guy built a schwimmwagen replica, i also saw it at w&p, bloody brilliant job, totally amazing.

thats the sort of thing he wants to achieve, (if only half as good as that he will be happy)

so any ideas or help would be much appretiated. :D

    thanks

    shaun

  9. Cosrec,

the story of the land rover recovery by the axle, (i am delving deep into my head archive, it was a loooong time ago when i was a b3 reccy mec) anyway if i remember the sergent bent the axle casing and one side link arm bracket broke, as i remember the axle was on the p**s, i.e after, the wheelbase on one side was longer than the other!

we were always told not to use jate rings for recovery? only for lashing down, i think because 1, thats what they are designed for, 2, how much load will the bolt take?

the photo of the sand colour stolly, the attatchment on the lower hull, is not standard military (at least its not in any of the manuals, and never seen it in any official photo's)

the 2 little eye's are for suspended recovery, the tow jaw in middle is standard fittment.

and the two eyes at lower of front hull, are lashing eye's (should be 8, welded on the hull) and the 2 front also for towing/recovery, and the cables are stowed up along the cab.

hope you had a good holiday. :D

  10. Hi all again,

just another thought for this thread!

if you have another engine fitted in your mv, can you post pictures of the conversion!

i am in the middle of fitting a 200 tdi into a normally aspirated land rover 110,

i know there both landy engines but it shows that you can improve by fitting modern engines!

i will post some pictures, but the project has slowed a little, as the bulkhead is rotten so the owner wants to replace it

  11. Hi all,

i have a mk2 stolly, that initially i thought about re-engine it, but this one is in original good complete condition, so i am on the hunt for another to do it to.

in the first issue of classic military vehicle mag, the feature about an engine change in a stolly, (they were just changinr one b80 for another) they have a photo at the end saying this it what it should look like, but actually its a cummins! can anyone tell what model? or who does this stolly belong to?

"stal 108" your stolly with cummins, how has it affected it? performance wise? does it rev enough? is there enough power? obviously better on fuel! and whats the sound of it like?

my plan is to get another and totally modify it, so im not bothered about originality as i have the other for that.

i like the cummins motor, even though i work at volvo, but the volvo motor's only rev to 2- 2500, so i've ruled them out, also they seem to be a wee bit more expensive!

thanks for your advice and help

    shaun

  12. using the axles is not a good idea!

once down on the slab, some know it all serge (names withheld to protect the innocent) got the landie bogged in, so he promptly started to recover it from the axles, he was told that's not a good idea, by me and some others, (but as i was only a lance jack at the time, and the others private's) we were told to shut up, "im a sergent"

so he continued, the rover bogged in and then the funny noises started to be heard until, "bang" one bent and damaged axle!

it gave way on one side and pulled it off! lesson learnt, and one red faced sergent with a slightly lighter wallet!

strong chassis fixings are the only point!
