  1. and no comments on my lilly white legs :nono:

This was the one I thought of posting before my incident. This guy went to adjust the oxy, the valve was leaking, he had oil/grease on his hands with result of big bang.

  2. I always thought of posting some of the more interesting safety bits that come to me from time to time.

Not the safety bulletins where you think "what a daft prat" but the ones that you think "I could have done that"!

Well I had to make myself a guinea pig icon_sad.gif

Being an old bugger when I work on my vehicle I wear knee pads. Over a month ago I was painting it and occaisionally spilt thinners on my overalls and I guess soaked into the knee pads.

Last saturday I was working on the Pinz, with my knee pads and my left knee was in a fair amount of pain. I thought maybe bad weather, maybe I shouldn't of hit that tree at 130kmh many years ago etc etc.

After a while I pushed the kneepad down, hoping to relieve the pressure and didn't think much of it. Sunday I was working in shorts and noticed great burn marks on my left leg with blisters forming.

I can only assume chemical residue in the left knee pad, which is amazing after the lapse in time. The photos below are today, 4 days after wearing it. So I post this :

    - as a warning of course

    - and if it gets any worse, send me choccies and flowers

  3. Pulled the winch solenoid cover off at the condo last night...

    Wishing I didn't

Also noted the missus got kinda upset that I was doing the diassembly work in the lounge room

Oh well I forgot the allen keys so I cant rip it apart any more

  4. whose got the job of building them landrover chassis up :)

We were talking about this yesterday as have in this guys shed:

    2 716 Pinz getting rebuilt

    1 716 Pinz getting stripped

1 Defender 90 petrol (just had chassis galved)

1 Defender 90 300tdi (completely disassembled and going to get the chassis galvanised).

    2 110

    1 Range Rover (abandonned)

1 Defender 90 (another one in with prop shaft issues)

I told my mate he needs to build a bigger shed :D as most likely we got 2 trailers coming and a 718. Trying to get the 90 rebuild started as can do a few things at once.....

  5. I've just done the belts on a VW camper with the same engine and marked the pullleys and the belts then marked the new belts then refit to the marks ,,, remember two paint marks for the camwheel ,

Waterpump was ok , this is the cause of many snapped belts on this type of VW engine ,,,

I've just bought a later one 2001 with the 2.5tdi with both belts snapped ( which I thought very strange ) with only one bent valve ,,, and camshaft in three bits ,,, I think the fuel pump end of the cam has a slot in that a 4mm? piece of steel will fit this lines up with the top of the head ( needs to be evenly packed ) , then there's some dowls that fit some of the pulleys ,, Will try and dig out engine manual should have part numbers for the timming belt setup tools ,,

crank bolt has a high torque setting that is a stretch bolt ( I've re-used them no bother ) does yours have the V or the flat belt driven alternater

I have the V belts for the Alternator and power steering. Yep the main catch is just identifying the part numbers as can get easy enough on Ebay. Volvo 940 is also the same.

Well spent all day working, mocked up the brush guard (which is different from the UK MOD versions)

Then spent the rest of the day cleaning up the winch and fitting it. Just need to fit the rollers, but as the galv is no good main re do them, maybe

  6. Been looking through a huge box of postcards here as I collect (well did) military ships. I have about 2 boxes of junk I am not interested in so I was digging for Mil vehicle cards to scan and post.

Found a couple which I'll scan over the weekend.

One I found has peaked my interest, though. A RAF card from "Himalayan Expedition Dhaulagiri IV 1974" Any RAF guys know that one?

  7. Might be able to get hold of a 6x6 (718K) manual, drop me a PM so I don't forget :)

    Stone

As your brother is a really nice bloke :), can you ask him if they made the tools to change the timing belts or did they get VW or Volvo ones? I was chasing a set, I know the VW or Volvo ones fit but I don't know the part numbers.

Basically from memory you need 2 lock tools and one tensioner.

  8. What was it a picture of? The most expensive postcard that i have seen was of a WW1 Ambulance which went for over £600.

I was collecting military ship cards. I say was as I got a cupboard full of them, but spend more time on car tinkering lately.

RPPC (Real Picture Post Cards) can go for big bucks as typically there is only one. The highest I have seen was a RPPC of the Titanic leaving port which was well over 10k quid. But I guess does have one reason as no Titanic cards were even sent, for obvious reasons.

I need to have a dig through the slush box as I know there are mil cards in there, maybe with some vehicles. Ships were easy as can normally find their history fairly quickly

  9. I have come accross this project in connection to my work twice as it was the creator of two types of piping technology and as I read today considered, to date the greatest military engineering achievement.

I know how they rolled the pipe accross the channel using ConuDrum.

The lines went all the way to the Rheine so was curious if they continued unrolling it on land or some other way. Whatever they must of had dedicated vehicles.

  10. Problem with these Malaysian Army Land Rovers is that there is not much military about them apart from the paint job.

Some have rifle racks, but to me just a stock Land Rover or modified locally, like these for Starburst (from memory)

  11. Great. Thanks Mike. A splash of paint makes all the difference, doesn' t it?

Good luck with the rest of the resoration. Downhill all the way now :coffee:

It helps having a spare drive train as although it's prettied up, I want to get into the innards.

So the idea is service the spare bits from the spare car, then swap out.

    Then maybe a trailer :cool2:

  12. He's had two in with low miles that needed auto gearboxes ,, on getting them repaired it was found that the trans are just the same as a saloon car gearbox , so they added stronger internals

Yeah the auto box is a fairly standard ZF box (ZF4HP22 I think), Land Rovers and BMW's have them. I wouldn't mind knowing what kit they put in though as that sounds interesting....... I've never diasassembled an auto box as always had a phobia about them, so have to do one one day.

Apparently the one part impossible to get is the torque convertor as the Pinz one is different.

The MOD ones have the fold down windscreen kit, which one of my fellow Pinz nuts want.

No spanner swinging for me this weekend as negotiating to buy a 6x6 Pinz for some attachments I am wanting, note not needing. The problem with doing car projects, you start looking at accessories

  13. We got 3 in the yard, so the first one has had a lot of bits 'interchanged' so the mechanicals will be kept as spares.

The tub will most likely get reused in a rebuild going to UK as out of all 3 it had the best body.

I have not got anything done on mine for a few weeks, but my mate is catching up fast :)

There was a coat of primer

  14. here's a 1993 that's still service it'd sat at base for 18 months waiting for parts :-| ,, it's just been in for repaint , supposedly its only got a 1.9turbo diesel , great machine all the same :)

I wonder what part as nearly everything is out there.

Yep P93, slightly different grille, intercooled with a really stupid fuel filler (UK MOD :banghead:)

Mines a P90, I got the same winch, but different front bar work. Trying to buy some P93 bits now as thinking of going auto box and the intercooler would be nice.

Maybe will go do some work on the Pinz today. Talking about the scrapyard stuff that maintenance trailer in my other post is around 600 quid as did a quick run up there yesterday

So does he have access to manuals???????
