  1. Back to jets.

On December 10, 1963, during a test of the NF-104A rocket assisted Starfighter, Chuck Yeager narrowly escaped death when his aircraft went out of control at 108,700 feet (nearly 21 miles up) and crashed. He ejected at 8,500 feet after failing to regain control of the powerless, rapidly falling craft. He became the first pilot to make an emergency ejection in the full pressure suit needed for high altitude flights.

An investigation showed the cause of the crash was a spin that resulted from excessive angle of attack and lack of aircraft response. The excessive angle of attack was as a result of a gyroscopic condition set up by the J79 engine spooling after shut down for the rocket-powered zoom climb phase.

I like the bit where the ejection seat hit his face and ignited the oxygen.

His gloves caught fire trying to put his face out and is kinda depicted in the film the right stuff as he asked the hot rod kid for a knife to cut his gloves off. He sliced the end of one of his fingers off.

I wanted a photo of him and Glamorous Glennis so I contacted the US embassy and they replied with his name address, social secrity number, military record etc etc..... yes strange

Anyway I mailed him in '91 and he posted me that photo, so legend and a nice bloke

  2. followed by my favourite plane, the Vultee Vengence

The story I was told, designed by the American's,built by the British and given to the Australian's which ended up a dive bomber that could not recover from a dive

Whilst searching for parts for these I found a Spitfire, but well thats another story :cool2:

  3. Well went to the yard today determined to solve this jaming up of the system as the Pinz felt like the brakes were jammed on, so:

    - checked all the pneumatic difflocks

    - checked the all wheel drive control

    - checked the handbrake

Result nothing wrong :argh: so mystified, depressed etc so started reattaching the centre engine covers and 'noticed' that the brake pedal was slow in returning up. So after all this 'dicking' around was because the brake pedal isn't returning quickly. So when I get out of the car and jack the rims everything is ok, I get back in, touch the brake and it would stick down etc etc..

Same old story, look at all the dificult stuff then turns out to be something relatively easy.

So went for a spin :yay: . Everyone looking at me, must have been the dirty clothes.

Also post the photos of my first trip to the petrol station:

    - Bangladesh petrol station worker who kept asking me if I was in the Army; and

    - 1.70 RM/litre for diesel (0.30 GBP/litre)

  4. Mist and fog would be ok we've had nothing but rain for what seems like weeks

Yeah I noticed that when rebuilding my Lightweight, outside in the UK last year i.e. the raining starts Friday lunchtime and ends Sunday night.

Muggy here, can get quite unpleasent but I have had monkeys on my paint and a cobra under the toolbox, so where ever a rebuild is there are pro's and con's.

and yes I screamed like a girl when I noticed the cobra

and no I didn't take a photo as I was running the other direction

worst part is we never found the bugger, so real careful when getting stuff out of the sea containers

  5. Well another weekend starts... with tomorrow some tinkering.... Had planned some major stuff but parts havent arrived

This is one of the 6 in UK, can you spot the major difference?

ans: mine has palm trees in the background and in the UK has mist and fog

  6. The 200 is by far the easier of the two to fit to a Series as you can use the original mounts and flywheel housing.

It depends which 200tdi. A disco one fits the original mounts but the turbo hits the chassis.

A defender one the turbo is higher but you have to slice off the RH engine mount at the chassis as the injection pump is lower so the engine bracket is longer. Easiest way after cutting the RH mount off is to take the RH engine bracket off the 2.25, invert it and weld it to the chassis.

  7. Couple of other questions?? Whats the seating position like. As when ever i see them being driven here. The drivers always seemed very cramped. Also top speed??. I came across 3 a few months back coming through the Dartford crossing. I was fully loaded in the 101 towing a Sankey as well. They didnt look like they were hanging about. I got the thumbs-up as i passed.and carried on pulling past 70mph with O/D engaged. They didntseem like they could keep up.

I think the seatings ok and I am a FB... definately better than a Landrover Lightweight.

I haven't had mine out on the hwy but 716 are supposed to hit 100kmh and 718 80kmh, I think (just about to doze off here).

Another MOD problem is the 16 x 9 tyres, great for offroad but does mess with the gears. I have been told its better to fit 32" diameter tyre.

Maybe going slow also as UK MOD, politically correct etc :-D

  8. Landrover spec items:

    - airvent for driver (incredibly useless)

    - fold down tailgate

    - the really daft fuel filler. Landrover argued that you could replace the filler by the cap. Pinz were modified with this dumb filler extension with allen bolts holding it on. So in effect you have a locking fuel cap that can be removed with 3 allen key bolts.

those spring to mind. They made a few short ones to but apparently they liked to fall over

  9. Austrian........ last of.

None of that hodge podge from UK :) (sorry regurgitating several Pinz owners rants. Actually interesting as several of the annoying bits on Pinz were because the MOD insisted based off Landrover specifications)

The Malaysian Army add some quirks, some a bit odd but thats always the case

  10. yep I sent 6 to UK a few months back. This latest batch are extremely bad and the owner of this particuliar yard (in the last post) is extremely eccentric (that polite for what I am really thinking).

Actually everything I posted in here is for sale. The main reason I joined this group, just in case someone wants something different.

I keep pushing the Roman Brasov DACS as good prices, the diesel stonefields but Landrovers tend to be well overpriced which is a pity as there is a yard full of LR fire trucks

  11. In case anyone missed it, some more these on Ivecos here: http://www.hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?t=12758&highlight=iveco

And yes the brakes are sqeeeky..and the transfer box could be a weak point.

    yep I missed it

yes would make a nice expedition vehicle

I know of a white one here sitting in the junkyard, was kinda tempted but got 2 Pinz (much harder to fix when only one!)

I like the new ones that MOD and everyone else is buying. Great for those shopping runs
