  1. Cheers, hope they fix the Thornycroft up some day as well. Does anyone know more about this ground vehicle display, ie where it's going to be and whats going to be there? RAF ground vehicles at Duxford that I can think of are;

    Bedford OXC and trailer

    Bedford MW tanker

    Thompson 3 wheel refueller

    Bedford QL Fuel bowser

Tracked tractor (think it's a Fordson or Clayton)

Morris LRC (doubt they'll move it from the Normandy exhibition)

    Standard Beaverette

Fordson WOT barrage balloon towing vehicle

    Austin K6 coles crane

    Anyone know of any more?

  2. Cheers, do you know when the Austin K6 with crane will go on display? It'll be an interesting addition to the museum, at an aviation museum sometimes I find the ground vehicles more interesting than the aircraft!

  3. Trying to find pictures and survivors of the Thornycroft Amazon 6x4 lorry, it was used by the RAF in WW2 with a coles crane on the back, Airfix do a nice kit of one. I've seen a late version at the Yorkshire Air Museum but i've seen a couple more in magazines and one on tv which is the earlier version like the Airfix kit depicts, can anyone help?

    Cheers, Rob

  4. Although I don't own an MV, it's certainly a good idea and i'd visit - theres tons of aviation and other transport museums out there, but not many military vehicle ones, so would be a very good idea, also means that vehicles could be seen by lots of people rather than only be shown at one event a year or so, possibly creating more interest in the hobby etc

  5. Haven't completely read this one yet but at the moment i'm stuck into 'Air Gunner' by Mike Henry DFC. It's his story of being an air gunner in WW2, at the moment i've gone through his training, the start of war, and at the stage i'm in at the moment he's about to go on his first operation in a Blenheim IV, good stuff!

  6. I've been constantly watching the episodes and extras of both series of 'The Mighty Boosh', the BBC comedy show which is ace, not sure if any of you guys have heard of it. Haven't watched any new films in a while but can't wait until 'V for Vendetta' comes out on Friday, even the guys costume is cool

  7. Basically the Germans succeeded at first but had heavy casualties, the defences worked in their role of slowing the Germans down. However, by the second day, the Royal Navy had come down from Scapa Flow and dealt with the minefields and other protective measures put down by the Kriegsmarine so they were causing havoc with the german supplies crossing the channel.

Eventually, the Germans were running out of reinforcements and supplies, whereas the good guys were bringing down more reinforcements and supplies from the north, eventually German commander issued a withdrawal. Would have been very heavy casualties on both sides, and South East England would sadly have suffered massive civilian casualties, especially the home guard as the Germans treated them as spies pretty much as they weren't considered legal combatants.

Fascinating stuff, would make a great movie, even more useful for me as i'm currently studying the Battle of Britain for my history A level coursework.

  8. I've got a new one - my best mates drama teacher is married to Stephen Graham, the guy off snatch - tonight she shook his hands at some awards thing at school, i'm unbelievably jealous of her i've been dying to meet him!

  9. Haven't heard anything in a while, the owner seemed interested in both the Fordson WOT2 and also the AEC Matador, possibly more interested in the Matador because there are so many variants he could build on the chassis, such as the Deacon SPG and armoured truck, Dorchester armoured command vehicle, AEC armoured car etc, and different bodies for the Matador itself, if I hear anything else i'll let you know.

  10. At the North of England open air museum, Beamish, in the park there is a German WWI gun on a plinth on it's carriage, although i'm not sure if this is a naval gun put on a carriage or not. I think the Royal Artillery museum at Woolwich has a couple at least WWI guns, I know theres an 18 pounder at least

  11. Didn't see the first episode of the Real Dads Army, but the episode on last night was very interesting, especially the results of the wargames in 1974 where they saw what would have most likely happened if Germany invaded. Nice use of material as well, especially the clip of the A13 Cruisers at speed, i've seen documentaries before which show Sherman tanks in Normandy whereas the narrator is talking about the BEF in France 1940!

  12. very common i'd have thought - seen plenty of pictures of whitewashed Churchills, cromwells etc, plus the M10 Achilles at the top is a British one (17pdr gun). Not sure about having them painted entirely white in NW Europe, especially as if it thawed you'd have a tank that would stick out liek a sore thumb, whitewash could be easily removed and put on when needed.
