  1. We should be. Plan is to dig in like front line positions, not entirely sure what to do yet but one idea was to get a photo of the Leicesters dug in, and try and copy that photo exactly, and have the photo on a board in front of the display. Have only been to War and Peace once, back in 2002 (I think). Does there tend to be many British infantry groups? Only remember seeing the LRDG guys and some airborne troops last time

  2. Cheers for the answer ArtistsRifles, should do the trick! Fv1620, I can tell from the photo that it's an early Whirlwind, as it has the earlier piston engine (clamshell doors at the front, later Whirlys had a more pointed nose and a gas turbine engine), and it's a very early mark as it has the straight tailboom and dihedral tailplanes.

I'm guessing the registration finishes in 971 because of the number on the nose, but I googled 'Whirlwind 971' as I couldn't find any Whirlwinds with 971 in the registration in a book on british helicopters i've got. Instead I came across this set of decals on a model shop http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=ML72121

so apparently the Whirlwind is a HAS.3 (helicopter anti-submarine) from 971 ship flight, so presumably based on HMS Ark Royal as the aircraft in the decal set is?

  3. Looks like the Tommy Atkins re-enactment society (portraying the Leicestershire Regiment in NW Europe 1944-45) will be there, anyone's more than welcome to come over for a brew up and a chat. May even have a VERY nice universal carrier. Does anyone know if the organisers lets groups dig in?

  4. Hey all, as well as an MV nut i'm also an aircraft nut as well. I'm looking for a Whirlwind helicopter that has been in the north west region (near Bolton) recently, but no one seems to know where it is at the minute. Came across a photo of it with a Stalwart behind, so thought maybe someone here knows where it is, after all can't be that many Stalwarts near Bolton (if it's still there). Thanks for any help or leads

  5. This was posted on another forum by a member of my re-enactment group. Be great if some of you guys could make it to this event

Location is the Pochins Estate (manor house), Barkby, Leicestershire.

It is a first military event being held. After last years smaller event at the site, the manor has given the go ahead to do a pure military event and is helping as much as possible, to hopefully make it a great and up coming event. It is a stones throw from where the 82nd Airborne were based at March Hare, Scraptoft and in the run up to D-Day, the local area was swamped with Allies. The 82nd airborne also did a practice parachute drop in the surrounding fields of the manor.

We have 90% confirmation on a flypast from the Sally B. There will be post war vehicles there, (as the squire has a very large personal collection of vehicles himself) but these will be displayed in a different area of the location. So if people have post war vehicles they may be interested in bringing this is fine

On the Saturday evening there is a 40's dance, any one whos intestested please contact me for details.

There will be a battle scenario.

should you like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I am having a good flow of interest in the event, so fingers crossed, it will be good. Everyone has to start somewhere.

    regards

    Nicky

  6. I've seen them called both - Fordson was the commercial vehicle part of Ford in the UK so it probably came from that, it mentioned it in the CMV magazine article on the WOT2, i'll try and dig it out

  7. WWI tanks at Bovington were used by local units in 1940 when invasion was thought to be imminent, I know Little Willie was used (think I saw a model of it with a turret on it which it apparently had on in WW2). Also, there's a photo out there of a Mk V tank in Berlin which was used in the final days of the war, probably just as a static defence point though

  8. Yep they're both still there, on my visit they were next to the Bedford QL in the new tank hall. The Comet tank that used to be on the front gate isn't there, probably in one of the buildings for restoration. The Churchill Crocodile is there instead now

  9. Sorry joining the debate a bit late, only just noticed it - just over four weeks ago at the Victory Show I was convinced into joining the Tommy Atkins society (http://www.tommyatkins.org) that portray the Leicestershire Regiment in WW2. Although i've only been to two events, it gives you a good feel of what it was like wearing the uniform etc, how heavy it makes you feel and on top of that carrying a rifle around. I'd still like to see how veterans see the re-enactment movement until i'm entirely sure of my judgement, a few i've talked to are all for it. Personally i'm not too keen on the SS re-enactors, but I suppose that's up to them if they want to do it...

  10. In my search for a 15 cwt truck, i've been offered a running but not fully restored Guy Ant 15 cwt truck. I was wondering how many of these are left, and if anyone has much info on what they're like to drive etc? Can't find much on the internet. Also, if anyone else would be interested in it, let me know and i'll pass you on to the person.

    Cheers, Rob

  11. Went to Norfolk for a couple of days earlier this week and visited the Muckleburgh Collection - great museum full of tanks, softskins, artillery etc, great food and location as well. Here's the pictures I took, hope they're of interest

  12. Off to the Muckleburgh Collection tomorrow, just wondered if there's any vehicles or artillery pieces etc anyone wants photographing? Looking at Jessie the Jeeps pics in the gallery, there's quite a few new additions to the collection since the last time I went
