What did your jig look like? I've got to make hoop sticks etc for the C15.

    Hi John

Quite simple, two flat plates with four guide pins through them, these hold the three rollers. Two 3/4" stainless steel bars held 2.1/16" apart and one 1"  stainless steel bar. The supports top and bottom are there to ensure the rollers are held square.IMG_7565.thumb.JPG.ca1dbaa8da728d18bdb4997859feb792.JPG

The roller supports are shaped so they don't interfere with each other when pressed together (this idealised CAD drawing shows this a bit better

    jig.jpg.87e9351cc82ee16c02017f4947f732e9.jpg

The round tube is put through the jig and then tighetened up in a vice, two of the guide pins are used to "square up" the pipe. The distance between the pair of rollers is fine for 16SWG, for thicker walled pipe this would have to be increased a bit and a press used.

    IMG_7564.thumb.JPG.31bc1787c23a31a4e5ff1b8c864c0cb7.JPG

You have to be careful measuring the distance between indents as the pipe length shrinks due the flattening and bending of the pipe (appx 1/4"). With the benefit of hindsight, I should have made all the "stringers" first and spaced the hoop sticks accordingly. I did have to adjust the length of a couple of "stringers" which is a bit of a pain.

  4. Hi

It was me who bought the bowser bits …

Firstly they are all unused and post was but…

The float has is canvas balsa wood (far too light for it to be cork), and has an original label “On Her Britannic Majesty’s Service” [thus Queen Elizabeth II], the design is virtually the same as late WW2 versions

The strainer again has the same dimensions as a WW2 one.  I have seen (what I think is an actual WW2 one) and there are some subtle differences, but this may be down to different manufacturer.  The WW2 closure mechanism has small clips either side of the aperture for the ball/pipe strainer and the base is riveted before being galvanised, the hinge is also a different size. Either way you will never be able to tell the difference

    IMG_7557.thumb.JPG.cfc348c0ae9818c359b4e297d006378e.JPG

The jug with the lip on again is a similar design, I have only ever seen one photo of a WW2 one, which appears to have a smaller lip. This was used to fill the meta/stellar filters with Kieselguhr Filter Powder

    jug.thumb.jpg.c8946fca42e58dac0326bfce0a05ed25.jpg

The scoop is like a standard animal feed scoop made of aluminum, don’t think that this is actually bowser related and is not show in the “stores” list.

The tank cleaning brush and meta/stellar filter cleaning brush are again post war, but I can’t really see the design changing very much

If anyone needs some more detailed photos/dimensions just PM me

  5. Hi

Contract V3904 was for 3000 vehicles and was originally allocated bonnet numbers of Z4510002 to Z4513002, with first deliveries 27th Feb 1941.

This is a very messy contract as many of them were allocated to the RASC with the following bonnet numbers Z575407 to Z575786 (380 trucks); Z575791 to Z576079 (289 trucks); Z576230 to Z576579 (350 trucks); Z576680 to Z576779 (100 trucks); Z771578 to Z771628 (51 trucks) also many were built as vans (MWV) and were allocated bonnet numbers V770401 to V77810 (410 Vans). To add to the confusion, many of the RASC allocated bonnet numbers overlap with bonnet numbers allocated to other contracts. In addition the contract may have been extended to at least 4179 vehicles, also there is another Bedford MW contract (V3964) which is equally as messy and I think that there was also some confusion over which contract was which. I have never been able to tally up the numbers, so if anyone has any information on these or any other Bedford MW contracts I would be most grateful.

It is unlikely that yours was originally an MWV as all the MWV’s from Contract V3904 as the information I have on their chassis number is that they are all under 22000.

Yours could either be an RASC vehicle or a "general vehicle" and I have no of determining which one it is so I cannot give you a good estimate of the original bonnet number

If I were you I would stick with bonnet number Z1661333 which is on the key card

unfortunately the  RN  VRM numbers are re-cycled again and again &  RN have no records.

    Hi

The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) does have a few history cards for Royal Navy Vehicles (these were transfered to the the NMRN when the Army transport museum at Beverley closed).

As noted all post war RN registrations have been re-cycled, I think that yours is a 4th time that the registration has been been used.

I do have access to these history cards and when I am next in the library I will have a look for you

Interesting the picture above shows a smaller towing ring. Or is just perspective of the picture?

    Hi

I think it just the perspective as I thought all 10cwt lightweight trailers had the same towing arrangement.

By the way you do you have copies of any of the Chillwell manuals that this manual supercedes, I am particularly after the one for the 100 Gallon trailer

  8. Hi

I am looking for a hip ring frame / cupola frame for my MWC

Don't suppose anyone has one lurking in dark corner they no longer need

There was one for sale on this forum a long time ago (Ben Rippingham was the seller)

I believe that the doameter of the inner ring is 24"

They do Olive green and I have used their Brown for WW2 vehicles and my clients approved the colour

    Hi Richard

Dropped in on them today.... they no longer stock the R16 canvas which would have been ideal.  I did have a look at the other canvas's they supply but none are suitable for WW2 vehicles.

Isn't that 31 January 1998? I had lots of vehicles on and off road in the '80s and '90s and didn't have to SORN them.

    Hi

    Thanks for your comments....

My mistake, it is 31 Jan 1998.

Agree, you have to have road use insurance when applying to tax a vehicle.

Not sure if you need insurance if you are getting the taxation class changed, probably OK if your vehicle is already SORN'd, but I did get insurance for mine as it was pre SORN.

    Cheers

  11. I thought that this may be useful….

When I purchased my Bedford MWC, it came with a V5, but there was no date of manufacture declared and the Taxation class was Not Licenced.

    1673894338_IMG_7416-Copy.JPG.4a85f242ddafb6f0145999f06dbd4e51.JPG

When using the DVLA Vehicle Check the Tax status showed “Not Taxed for on road use”

    2116838169_taxandMOT.thumb.jpg.745f94bdad9189b48da393e0156f9741.jpg

I have waited until my truck is nearing completion and needed to get my V5 amended to show the right year of manufacture and the correct taxation class i.e. Historic

Being a member of IMPS, I used them (Tony Lawrence) to supply me with verified dating information showing that my truck was manufactured in 1944.

This along with my V5 was sent off to DVLA Swansea, just over three weeks later.  A new V5 arrived with the declared date of manufacture being 1944.

    IMG_7474.thumb.JPG.339c275daf8a9ca51d2e96a8191727fa.JPG

However the taxation class on the V5 was still showing Not Licenced. The following day a personalized letter arrived stating that I had to apply for change in taxation class using a V10. With hindsight I should have included this when I originally sent it off to the DVLA, however a person at DVLA said all I needed to send was my V5 and a covering letter.

The Not Licenced taxation class is a convenient way for the DVLA to recognised vehicles that have no tax and have not been SORN’d. A typical case is when a vehicle was registered before 31st January 1988 but not taxed at this date. SORNs were introduced on 31st January 1988 and after this point if you didn’t tax your vehicle you had (and still have to ) SORN it. According to a freedom of information request at the end of September 2014, there were 204,598 vehicles that fell into this category.

Next step, I changed my insurance from laid up to Fully Comprehensive. Duly filled in my V10 (application for vehicle tax) along with a V112 (MOT exemption declaration)

Three weeks later my new V5 arrived with the correct taxation class

The DVLA web site now shows

    1904461533_DVLANow.thumb.jpg.a5ddb5898c4c5e62f6057eabcfd20f12.jpg

    A couple of recommendations…

If you have an incorrect V5 (like mine) then; get a verified dating letter from a club that is authorised by the DVLA to authenticate applications for registering ex-military vehicles for road use. You have to send off the original signed copy (they will not accept photocopies etc). Send this off with a covering letter along with a completed V10 an V112 (depending on vehicle weight you may need to use a V112G). It is best to get your vehicle insured for road use.

If you do not have a V5, then it is the same as above but you will also have to complete a V55/5 form  (instead of sending off your V5) and send a cheque for the registration fee (see DVLA website for current prices)

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

  12. Hi John

    Thanks for the info....

A bit of a long shot but have you searched though these

    https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1424610

to see if your Tilly is in them. they are lists of Australian Army vehicle records from pre WW2 , many of the WW2 ones are quite detailed, there are more vehicle types in them than the AWM abstract gives.

"The series presently contains twenty seven bound volumes. Within each volume entries are arranged numerically by Army Registration Number (ARN). The entries refer to tanks, assault vehicles, armoured vehicles, machine gun carriers, 15 cwt trucks, scout cars and jeeps. While there are inconsistencies and omissions, most entries provide the following information:
    - Army Registration Number (ARN)
    - Type and make
    - Engine number
    - Chassis or maker's serial number
    - Details of changes to registration
    - Details of eventual disposal of vehicles."

    Cheers

  13. Hi

Whilst waiting for some more pipe to be delivered, I thought I had better start finishing the suction hose filters and strainers.

I have been looking for originals of these for a long time but none have come up for sale, the originals look like this...

    Hi

Is it possible that that it is from an Air Ministry Contract. S1444 is a War Department one, I think that S4643 is also a War Department one (but can't find this in my copy of the Chilwell Census)

Looking very nice. Are you having a canvas cover made ?

    Hi Mike

Yes I will get a canvas made, there are 4 hoops.

The canvas is tied to hooks and eyes on the bottom bar, I have made these, but are not yet fitted.

    IMG_7477.thumb.JPG.4f75ccf282942b63242c9a253fc03d80.JPG

On the "original" there were 5 unevenly spaced hooks, I will be putting a couple of more on and making them evenly spaced. The rope eyes go at either end.

The supports for the hoops have now been welded on, you have to fit the rear support tube bracket on before doing this as it sits between two uprights ...

Tha main thing is to make sure that they are alll in line...

    IMG_7480.thumb.JPG.0d4d04aa8c6e9154cfb1613e13ccef44.JPG

I will be starting on the hoop sticks tomorrow, so watch this space
