  1. I think one anomaly in tyre sizes is British tyre manufactures stated imperial sizes but they were in fact metric. US and Canadian manufactures produced tyres that were marked and were and are imperial sizes. Markings after the tyre size are usually load and speed ratings. I think the ten year rule applies to all steer tyres.

Hi Phil, Happy New Year to you too!

Yes it was a bit of a job to get apart! The large pin that we had to clean as best as we could before removal to make it as easy as possible to knock out is obviously so the top plate can pivot from front to back on the base plate, there are two large coil springs that can't be seen from the pictures which enable the mechanism to pivot from left to right, the two wedge shaped pieces we removed are to lock the top plate once on even ground to prevent it from moving from left to right....if anyone one knows different please let us know.

One type is a fully oscillating 5th wheel and the one with only longitudinal movement is a standard 5th wheel.

  3. I think I remember a discussion about 4x4 Bedford J types, but I cannot find the thread. There is a Bedford J5 4x4 for sale at the moment in Esher. There is a plate stating the conversion was undertaken by All Wheel Drive of Camberley. As far as I can make out from the photo's the front axle differential is on the left sitting in the drivers seat and appears to be a split axle. At the rear the diff is about on the centre line, again a split axle.

  4. There was a picture on Facebook, of I think a rare Crossley IGL8 6x4 number L3925681 with a Coles crane powered by a Ford 10hp engine. I think the main engine was a runner as well. I think it was on the Continent in a private collection, seems to be Austria. A similar set up was fitted to a Leyland Retriever. Do any survive in the U.K.

  5. Faint and consistent that is about it. It would seem you are rarely satisfied. N/A engines rely partly on the gas going out of the cylinder to draw in fresh air for the next cycle, so the exhaust can not be as clean as a forced fed engine where the fresh air is chasing the foul air out. Even the old style injectors used in these engines easily get clogged. Fuel husbandry is hard work sometimes. I am really pleased you seem to have got on top of the problem and enjoying some time behind the old Roller. I guess from the spares box's there must be another DT going to get some attention. Great to get an update.

  6. I have watched the video several times, you have that gear box mastered. That C6 is sounding good but I do not think the fuel pump is quite right. I do not remember so much black smoke when pulling hard 900 to 1000 is their torque band, it was just a faint haze. It also seems inconsistent through the rev range, the black changes shades.  Have you compaired it with another one? It would seem the air inlet side is good as there is very little smoke a high revs. You have to get them right or they give piston trouble. Have you another fuel pump to try on it? This is just my opinion looking on. You do fantastic work.
