  1. we had insurance through road sure & they had an 'off road' policy that was 15.00 for the year as long as it was imobile.

     

    Well £26.15 per vehicle on or off road. When you allow for inflation & insurance tax that has since come in it measures up fairly well.

     

    But every year whether its a Shorland or a Pig the engine capacity appears as 200cc! I always ring up & they say they will inform the underwriters of the mistake. But this year I was told the computer can only print 200cc. As long as the registration is correct & the engine capacity on the log book is correct, not to worry!

  2. As far as Roadsure goes the premium is based on the value of the vehicle. Not whether it is immobile or goes out on the road (on its assumed low mileage).

     

    As far as SORN goes V890 is not appropriate if there is a current tax disc. I was told I need V14 which is available on line as a pdf. I found this but it was shown as a "mock up" & real one needs to be obtained. Part of its function is to obtain a refund but as this doesn't apply I found an online opportunity were SORN can be declared without receiving a V11 tax renewal/SORN reminder. So I was able to do it with the number from the V5C registration book.

     

    With the savings on that I have insured the Cipher Trailer as a vehicle in its own right, which gives some peace of mind.

    as i understand it third party cover is usually provided while attached to the vehicle, though not a legal requirement insurance is advisable for theft or damage to the trailer and its contents.

    That was the sort of thing I was worried about. Once I have unhitched it in order to level it, then I suppose whatever vehicle 3rd party cover existed ceases at that point. Shows seem very keen for you to state that your exhibit has public liability cover, it does focus the mind.

     

    Theft of course is a possibility especially at a big show. My wife's horse trailer requires a wheel clamp otherwise the insurance against theft is invalid. I don't think they make wheel clamps big enough for my wheels.

  4. Obviously tax & insurance is needed to drive a vehicle on the highway. But what is the situation if the vehicle is taxed and the insurance expires but the vehicle is without a functioning engine & therefore cannot be used on the highway.

     

    Given the level of DVLA computer capabilities, the system will flag up that there is a taxed vehicle without insurance. Therefore someone sooner or later will start investigating. I would like to declare SORN, but I see you can't SORN it if there is a current tax disc. But I don't want to pay insurance for nearly another year for a vehicle that's going nowhere.

     

    The other thing I was toying with insuring the 1-Ton Cipher Trailer, which is my little caravan for shows. The idea would be to cover its value & secondly I wonder about public liability. If my insured vehicle was in some accident on or off road at a show, I have cover. But would that extend to what I was towing?

     

    If I had a burst tyre & the trailer hit another car would the vehicle insurance cover it? Or if there was some incident with the public at a show would my vehicle insurance cover that or should I get some cover for the trailer in its own right?

     

     

  5. Tyler. I'm afraid I know nothing about Series I. As with a vehicle of any type identities can come & go plates move around chassis. But that dealer has a good reputation & would I think be very careful to only present things that had a legitimate history. I looked on his site to see if I could see it. But I was surprised that many of the older Rovers he had for sale seemed to be reasonably priced, but of course you have to add VAT :cry:

  6. Series IIA came out in 1961 so I imagine a prestige unit such as SRS would have something pretty up to date.

     

    The FV18006 does not appear as a variant in the FVRDE catalogue of 1954 which only lists FV18004.

     

    But FV18006 appears in the 1956 catalogue but is not in 1962 catalogue where they are all Series IIA.

     

    I meet with SRS veterans in May so can ask about what they drove then I have a colour picture somewhere of all of the Squadron on formation but no pics of vehicles I'm afraid.

  7. SRS = Special Reconnaisance Squadron RAC formed June 1962. But their role passed to 23 (TA) SAS when disbanded/amalgamated with elements of Cyclops Squadran 2 RTR to form Parachute Squadron RAC 1st February 1965. New dual role armoured reconnaisance & anti-tank capability with Hornet/Malkara.

  8. Its listed in the batch 45 RA 00 to 48 RA 49 just as Morris C8 4x4 GS Cargo Truck 1 Ton.

     

    Not a lot of help I'm afraid.

     

    At least you can work out how many others there were in the batch but 47 RA 97 - 48 RA 49 were not taken up in the allocation. Either side of that Morris block were Ford WOT2. I can't see any other C8 GS but there were some C8 FFW & compressor trucks in

    Sorry no details of the waste compactors, which must be a bitter blow but never mind.

  9. Fleet Data Society have been around for a couple of decades. The data largely came from Beverley Museum of Army Transport & individuals observations. Gradually the range of serials expanded & the errors have been thinned down.

     

    I have the RA series so tell me the reg no, but you won't get a unit history just the Wheeled Vehicle Contract & date & the numbers of vehicles in the batch. So its basic but a useful start.

     

    I have provided input to them on Humbers & Shorlands & used to subscribe to the site. But you have to remember that the military serials are only a side line. There are spotters out there for reg numbers of Hertz vans, Securicor lorries, bus fleets, tesco vans etc. There was a debate a while back whether to allow the military bit to branch off. That was voted down as the majority are into commercial vehicle fleets.

     

    I finally left when I kept getting endless emails about Cardiff City Councils new fleet of waste compactors. :roll:

    Yes I think it has to be VRN for MERLIN. What is the Wheeled Vehicle Contract No, that would give an idea of the reg batch.

     

    (Humbers are so much easier, take the last 4 digits of the serial number then stick BK in between)

  11. Yes if its a Rover you are tracing EMLRA can do this & its free - to members. So would be worth joining just for that.

     

    Of course Deepcut, it takes more time not to find the records than finding them. So it might seem a swizzle but someone has to hunt around to see whats there or not. i believe the EMLRA search is via a computer based search MERLIN?

I remember at a Southsea show many years ago, someone was berating an elderly man wearing a German uniform and displaying an Iron Cross, on the basis that he should not wear a medal he had not been awarded. The man retorted that he had been awarded it & rolled up his arm to show the SS tatoo with his blood group.

     

    Now did it cause more offence seeing the real thing than seeing a pretender?

    You don't think I would have wasted hours doing that today? What would you like next a mobile incident control point in the snow or an aircraft armament support vehicle in the snow.
