  1. Couldn't resist this one last Sunday at Farnham militaria, whilst everyone was looking at daggers, bayonets, guns, medals & Nazi memorabilia I actually found something interesting for me, Regulations for Army Ordnance Services Volume 3, Pamphlet No.37 Instructions for the Operation of a Returned Stores Depot in the Field. 26/Regulations/2476 dated 1954. Complete with maps & diagrams of the layout of repair trailers & generators. All with considerable detail eg trailer Type No.1 Clothing Repair Right Hand containing:

9 Singer 31K15 sewing machines, treadle driven, bench mounted

1 Singer 69-5 button, sewing machine, motor driven

Now where can I get a Singer 69-5? Seeing as I have to do the buttons round here

Isn't the spell checker cute, thinks it should have been Arnhem not Farnham!

  2. I use VLC player, its free and plays anything, Quicktime,Media and Real are a pain! as they never want to overlap and help each other! :computerterror:

I use IE 7, since I upgraded to that a couple of weeks ago I get occasions when everything goes unstable with menus flashing up around the screen & the button going sticky or non functional sometimes. I just wait & it clears sometimes I have to restart.

Anyway VLC looks good, I have downloaded it from Apple. But Windows can't open it, so I'm not sure what I need to work that. I am very wary of free down load sites as I wonder what else I might be inviting on board!

But as for the Quicktime player settings its annoying now its working I can't get to the controls I originally had. When I right click the options now are very limited about turning on the webcam etc.

  3. Much like a night at Cliv's with the ol' insecticide

At least there are no flies round here. Paul as you can see I had some problems loading the files all cured now. But now it won't let me find the options panel that was there. I have a problem now in that some links download slower than it is playing, so watching the video it get very stop & start, yet others are ok. There was a horizontal slider scale which was set half way & I moved it into quicker play setting but can't find it to put it back. Comes of meddling, but if I didn't meddle I would not have got the videos to play at all. Any ideas?

  4. Ah fixed it! On the player when it goes white on me I right click & there is an option to play all types of file, which I had selected ages ago. Curiously if I deselect them all & just do the default selection then it will allow autoplay :|.

  5. Hi Clive, just tried it & it plays automatically :dunno:

Thanks Lee, at least I know now what it ought to do. I suppose it must be something in my security settings, although YouTube runs automatically.

  6. Should it play automatically when I go to the link? I have Google videoplayer installed & the only way I can view it is to download the video file then run it. To do this I have to bypass the warning that the file could contain harmful contents etc.

When I click on the link the Quicktime player comes on with a big "Q" on a black background for a few seconds then the background goes white with "?" superimposed on the "Q". Surely it should run automatically? YouTube is fine it just runs automatically but annoyingly those files can't be saved or is there a way?

  7. Third one or third one with helmet of first one or better still third one with airborne helmet, given that I assume you are aiming for early 1972. The belt seems a bit high & tight, seemed to be looser & worn more on the hips maybe the weight of the respirator & bag helped pull it down a bit.

So have you sorted your brakes out?

  8. Now that would be even more useful - especially for servicing the Stalwart where things like the prop bosses need oil injected under pressure from a gun!!!

Well its the same for the Humber 1-Ton in the Tracta joints. Sadly servicing on preserved Humbers is very poor or non-existant. Sometimes when it is done you can see that grease has been injected, on the basis that there are "grease nipples" but trying to explain that they are lubrication nipples is met with hostility. I have had all sorts of things muttered at me from I have been in the Army & it is in the handbook. But even in the first User Handbook of 1954 it explains what to do in great detail. I am only trying to save people from a joint failure. :dunno:

At shows although a vehicle can look nice & fancy with markings, fluffy toys, flags, guns etc. It is very sad to look underneath to see no evidence of recent servicing.

  9. Yes the early one was of the 1947 version. The EMERs are not so helpful with a full description. Some of them straddle a time when EMERs were being redesignated as the result of new sections. Some are in EMER VEHICLES GENERAL R 177/4 & some are in EMER WHEELED VEHICLES U 267/1.

Here is further confirmation of what you are both saying:

  10. Neil,

The trailer looks like a Tecalemit serving unit. It is built on the 2 ton chassis, so doubtful it would be heavy enough for machine tools. Richard

    I agree with Richard:

Trailer, 2-Ton, 4-Wh, Workshop Servicing, Petrol, Tecalemit Servicing Equipment.

The User Handbook has some very nice photos of all the equipment, including how to service the servicing equipment!

    Seen GDSF 1990 same one?

  11. Roadsure man said that everybody has 200cc entered on theirs, the computer can't manage anything else. This seems extraordinary given that this computer must handle a lot of vehicles, how many domestic cars even, will have a capacity under 200cc.?

So if anyone is insured with Roadsure, could you check please to see if your policies say 200cc. is it just me they have messed up with or are there a lot of us with incorrect details? The annoying thing is, it doesn't show on the renewal but only comes with the certificates after you renew. Each year I ring up & the usual story is "Oh yes we will tell the underwriter". But this year I had a fairly confident man explained that it can't be changed & not to worry.

  12. I don't get it, regularly

Joris has turned the snow off & you probably aren't getting problems because like me you just do the HMVForum & not bother with the fancy bits, that's for the youngsters I think

  13. The snow is not the cause of it but it's gone now.

That's wonderful now the snow's gone. :-D It was very irratating, I would try & nip onto a page & quickly try to read the page before the snow got there & then move off quickly. Thanks for getting rid of that. I'm not getting any problems on the site but I only use the forum, which is fine.

  15. You know when you set up a new computer? You have to call it a name e.g. Clives computer, Family computer, sort of thing. Mine is called "YOU B*STARD" as my wife reckons that is what any computer here ends up getting called. :banghead:

  16. No problems here everything fine on the forum. But I have to confess I don't blogg, wiki (whatever that is), use gallery, use the newspages, use home page, look at statistics, look at interviews. Not saying these shouldn't be there but are not for me, I just use the forum as a forum & don't bother with the fancy bits, sorry.

  17. I you have trouble sleeping, a bit of bed time reading with one of those will cure it.

Well joking apart, next to my bed I have four binders of EMERs that I am still reading that I bought at Kemble. Now these are microfiche EMERs so that is a lot of information & very slow going having to stare up an eyepiece towards the bedroom light, almost hypnotic. Unfortunately there is not enough room on the bed for the microfiche reader :-(

  18. These four volumes I regard as eye opening essential reading:

    EMER GENERAL A 000 - A 820

    AESP 0100-A-001-001 - 0100-P-011-013

Army Code No. 12123 Parts I-V Guide to Army Coded Publications

A Guide to the NATO Codification System

Unlocking the mysteries of EMERs, AESPs, Army Coded Publications & NSNs

  19. can't be that many Stalwarts near Bolton (if it's still there).

    Yes Bolton's still there, sorry!

As you're into helicopters, what do make of this picture of a Whirlwind my father snapped when it made an emergency landing on the seafront at Teignmouth, Devon? I was quite small at the time but what impressed me was not the helicopter so much but I was convinced that there was a policeman guarding it & he had a rifle. This would have been mid 1950s height of cold war China exploding it first nuclear weapon, aftermath of Korea, Suez building up, IRA mounting incursions into Ulster etc a very unstable time. But to this day I can picture this armed police constable.

  20. Not sure...........

......would like everyones feedback (not on my talents) on if they like it or not, what it should have on there etc etc.

It might be alright to have as a vehicle display card, but far too complex as a badge to wear. Just a simple logo is needed, maybe a space to write your name or nom de plume.
