  1. This picture I have tittled "I've just been spotted". This was at Middle Wallop 1993. I had to explain myself as it is difficult for the military mind to appreciate that although it was an Air Display I have not the slightest interest in aircraft.

I had a similar encounter at a RN Air Station where I was ejected at gun point for wandering only slightly off course to photo something... a Bedford runway sweeper. The view was that it was an Air Show & aircraft was what I should be taking photos of & nothing else.

  2. Haunted Hanomag?? :-o

Perhaps it was a patient left over from when it used to be an ambulance 20 years ago?

Seems a shame that there aren't any ambulances there, guns & weapons seem to be more interesting? There used to be a Saracen ambulance out the back but I think that got chucked out, seems a shame that ambulances are regarded with such low esteem. :|

  3. Yes I was just about to ask the same. I was thinking with the Hornet towing the Cipher trailer crawling along to Great Dorset Steam Fair.

I can never get much speed up on those small roads & hills. Although what scares me more is travelling on the motorway where you have to stay on the motorway by moving into the middle lane when a particular junction comes up. The M27 by Rownhams Services is a pain as it is uphill as well. If you move over in good time you will be hooted & cut up, if you leave it to the last practical moment nobody will let you in. I have often thought an orange light might be a useful indicator that something odd was up ahead. BTW is there a minimum motorway speed?

  4. I only use the forum bit & not had the longstanding problems.

But last night the main forum either couldn't be accessed or even if you were on it couldn't move to another page. Same this morning very slow the jeep gets stuck in the snow on the right side moves a little then stuck again. I check my connection speed which is 4.9 mbps which is the fastest it has ever been. Other sites load ok, so don't know what that all means :?

  5. Have you ever been stopped in your Military Vehicle by the police,

Yes on a number of occasions

did it change your opinion of the law.

Yes, for the better (eventually sometimes)

    why and what happened

I work on the principle that officer is just a bloke doing a job, a person like the rest of us you will have all the day to day life & job stresses that we all have. Being lippy, a smart bum or snotty is not going to help you. I just behave in a pleasant (but not creepy) matter of fact way as I would do any member of the public at a show.

The first stop was an alert officer following me wondering why I was driving an armoured Land Rover with Irish number plates. After explaining the history of the vehicle & how I restored it, before he made his excuses, he asked when was the next MV show as he quite liked see the old vehicles. The following weekend I saw a bloke in shorts with a funny hat + a screamy kid on his shoulders eating a melting ice cream as he posed for a photo in front of my vehicle. I nearly went up to him but thought let him just enjoy his day.

The next time there was a massive convoy travelling north from Marchwood military port, I rushed home & got my camera photoing most vehicles including some MP Rovers & MOD Police saloon cars. I lost track of one until I found it had broken from the convoy & had driven up behind me I was aked to explain myself. I am not sure of their powers of jurisdiction but I am sure they could have soon summoned someone who had. After a while of chatting their eyes were glazing over, all smiles & left & told me what other types of vehicle were yet to be photoed.

The most recent time was being apprehended walking on the motorway trying to get some water for the pig. I was in the wrong & silly to do this I realise. Rather formal at first, quite rightly, once in the car & giving me a lift all was fine. It turns out they had just come from an official police event where I had been displaying the vehicle as it had a time in police service. They had been playing in the band at the event but were now back on duty.

There have been a number of occasions at laybys or filling stations. I have been scrutinised from a distance, I just smile & often this initiates a conversation, it often turns out the officer is ex-forces or is a model maker or restores Land Rovers.

So just blokes doing a job, a difficult one & one might as well try to make everybody's life easier. I can think of 3 officers I know of in MV/Land Rover restoration.

Why do you ask? Have you ever been stopped?

  6. Much as I didn't like that thing going across the top of the screen I now find it useful to see if my internet connection is going peculiar on me & slowing as a prelude to freezing (no pun intended) or being cut off by the server.

I have been on broadband 2.2mbps but recently upgraded to 4.4mbps, but as more people come on as it gets to the evening this drops 3.1 mbps & it slows down then freeze/cut sometimes this is as frequent as 10 minutes. So if the vehicle is at normal speed I know I'm ok.

So when it is removed after Christmas could we still have something going across the top. Needn't be a jeep even a goat or something would do, as Borat would say I am not choosy.

  7. I have 2 photos to illustrate this but they are each 2.25MB and I can't reduce them enough to post. Any suggestions?

Photobucket will automatically reduce them for you, once up loaded there they can be trimmed automatically further to 4 sizes, message board, website, thumbnail or avatar. But I am surprised on your photo editor there isn't a "Resize" option under your "Image" tool button.

  9. I'm intrigued to see if those who won't use their own names will be too shy to send a picture of themselves

Anyway this was taken when I drove the Hornet to the reunion of the Parachute Squadron RAC Old Comrades Association. On the parade ground at Kandahar Barracks at Tidworth. With a name of a barracks like that it is sobering to realise how long there has been an involvement of the British Army in that part of the world.

  10. If you look on page 1 there is a RUC LWB Land Rover 4471 AZ. This vehicle was the basis of the first prototype Shorland. They lifted off the armoured body dumped it at Lislea Drive HQ where it stayed for decades only to be cut up about 5 years ago. A real bit of history lost.

As the prototype predates this photo by 5 years it seems curious that they re bodied it. Presumably with the original body that was retained for this eventuality. The prototype became outmoded by the issue of production Shorlands in 1966.

  11. Its a toilet (military spec) for asian people

Yes wasn't actually going to say that but it is. British troops used facilities with wooden seats & lids, but there were religious, cultural & caste objections to the traditional seat. Even so some castes would not use apparatus such as the Dhondy, it is not stated what happened in those circumstances & perhaps best we don't know. Here is another version of a self-closer.
