Panzer ll, there are more pics of that particular vehicle somewhere. Amazing that in 1943 such outdated tank was still in service...

My pragmatic solution to overcome the heater-problem was to take my TDi to North Africa. Don't do that if you have a TD5 or the new version with the Ford-engine since they won't survive the North African fuel (wonder, if Landrovers are only built for European inner-city traffic in the meantime :-))

May sound a little bit strange - but could you provide a cap of the tire-valves?

There were also some Dodge trucks modified to makeshift armoured cars in Sirya which saw action around Bir Hakeim in 1942. If I recall correct they were called TANAKE...

Just another thought came to my mind: If the Egyptians used that type of tank. Would it be possible that it was "collected" by the British during the Suez-Crisis, then brought to Libya - where the British definitely had tanks at that time - and used for target practising?

...and now; who will add the spareparts list to have it running again ;-)

Can I summarize as follows:

A) Sherman M4A4

B) Production date: March 1943

C) Converted to GM Twin Diesel Engines as the Model M4A2

D) Chrysler manufactured

Further:

E) Due to late production date the tank did not reach North Africa during the Desert Campaign. First use was only in Italy

F) Such type is known to be converted by the French and to be used by Egypt

G) It was obviously used for target practising before it was abandoned in Tripoli

Here is the stamped number:

The number had only 4 digits: 9085

The distance from one boogie to the other is 1,62m

Ok; the numbers are clear now. Will alos take pics of the engine by (guess that remnants of the connections would be interesting). Measure the distance of the boogies...

...and hope the tank is still there....

@ Adrian; could you also give a "birthdate" to this particular modified type of tank and say, which army had used them? (I see your avatar and guess you know everything about Shermans ;-)

Colleagues; would it make sense if I would provide some measurements to help to clearly identify the tank?

You would have to tell me what is of interest. Maybe post a sketch here and mark where I shall put the measure-tape.
