Colleagues; I stumbeld about thes strange metal boxes once when travelling the desert. That time I thought that they must have something to do with the LRDG - but actually I have no proof for that assumption, not even a real indication...
And worse: I have no clue about the function of these boxes. Anybody knows about?

Great news. Many thanks. Unfortunately this is the only picture I could take that time. Just next to the place is a police checkpoint on the road and they do actually not like to see foreigners with cameras in their vincinity...

Thanks Gary; the South of LY is not accesible for tourists anyway for the time being. Hope that this is only a temporary measure!

Gary; I am a little bit confused about the route you intend to take. Thought that you would remain closer to the Cirenaica. And don't forget - the whole SE area is not accessible for tourism any more (hopefully only a temporary measure).

Thanks for compliments!

Many thanks for your information!

Was this a newer model of the famous Bofors AA gun of WW2; yes?

If you allow me to do some selfadvertising here then I would present the link to our book project:

The actual book is not yet available but the layout-work has started now. Runs as planned...

Oh; yesssss! There was once a quite big area which contained the water coming from the mountains. The "lake" was there until summer. And it has been dredged then...

Now I see. Then this vehicle was stationary at the end of the field and towing the plough by its winch; correct?

Hi Catweazle; sorry - the photos are already quite old, were sleeping on my HD; that time I was just fascinated about wrecks and did not think about the possibility for identification. I promise to take better care in the future!

When I came accross the first champ, I had no idea, what car this could be... seeing the wreckage, you recognize so many features which were just the same as you have known them from the Jeep. It looked to me like somebody could have bought a Jeep but somehow tried to build something which should look different...

Thanks for information, Papav66.

What was their perfomance? Good truck?

...would be a quite cool truck to drive through the desert ;-)

...if you allow me to add my comments:
The argument of better protection of the crew, if the engine is placed in front has already been solved in the design of the Israeli MERKAVA.
Above drawing (if it is in scale) does not prove a remarkable lower appearance lathough the turret is avoided.
What is the BIG PLUS, if a tank has no more 360-degree-turret? A fixed gun cannot be recognized as a benefit...
Identification request: What are these boxes

First I thought that they should carry spare barrels for an MG. But the PIAT -was it ever used in North Africa?
