antarmike Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 (edited) A new level of Army -Airforce co-ordination is reached with Cab-Rank operations over Normandy. Although used in the desert war, then calls for support were passed to a ground Command centre of the RAF, sifted , analysed to suitability and appropriate targets were selected. The RAF ground station then contacted the planes. Now fully armed, rocket equipped, Hawker Typhoons are maintained at operational height and can now be called down and given designated targets diectly by tank commanders using VHF radio to deal with enemy positions as they are encountered. The Typhoons are first used in this way during the ongoing battle for Caen. The targets are often only a few hundred yards ahead of the Allied positions, Edited July 20, 2008 by antarmike Quote
