  1. I think there are a fair few of us (I'm 35 I think and no grey yet lol). Also I don't think the high prices help although there are still bargins out there and also it seems youngsters arn't allowed to drive anything after they have passed their test anymore! Add to that the cost of insurance now and the price of fuel it all adds up to an expensive hobby. Added to that it seems that the appeal of rusty metal and the satisfaction of hearing an engine turn over and start for the first time has been over-shaddowed by a windows chime and i-pad beep :-(

  2. Well that led me on a good google session lol and i've come up with two lots of data. The first chart is the flashover distance and the second safe working distances for people trained and quailfied to work on these voltages. Timbo you are right that the UK rail networks say a safe distance of 9 feet for their employees except they also say that in an emergancy police can approach upto 3 feet. You learn something new every day, well I try to lol.

    Voltage--------------Flashover Distance

    300 V and less 0 ft. 0.03 in.

    Over 300 V, not over 750V 0 ft. 0.07 in.

    Over 750 V, not over 2 kV 0 ft. 0.19 in.

Over 2 kV, not over 15 kV 0 ft. 1.5 in.

Over 15 kV, not over 36 kV 0 ft. 6.3 in.

Over 36 kV, not over 48.3 kV 0 ft. 10 in.

Over 48.3 kV, not over 72.5 kV 1 ft. 3 in.

Over 72.5 kV, not over 121 kV 2 ft. 1.2 in.

Over 138 kV, not over 145 kV 2 ft. 6.6 in.

Over 161 kV, not over 169 kV 3 ft. 0.0 in.

Over 230 kV, not over 242 kV 4 ft. 2.4 in.

Over 345 kV, not over 362 kV 7 ft. 5.8 in.

Over 500 kV, not over 550 kV 10 ft. 2.5 in.

Over 765 kV, not over 800 kV 13 ft 10.3 in.

Also here is network rail's publication that says 9 feet

and the advice from BTP for police for 3 feet

  3. So at a minimum we are looking at something like

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CENTURYWISE-CW-20L-ONE-BAG-BLAST-POT-PACKAGE-shot-sand-grit-kit-blaster-/350913420652?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item51b411dd6c#ht_2599wt_1011

    With a two tool compressor.

    Thats within budgetish.

Will hopefully post the whole project if i can remember to take photos as i go. I'm awful with a camera, even on holidays i'll take one and never take a photo lol. Just getting all the right man tools together before I start like cranes etc..... :D

Thanks for everyones help so far, it has been REALLY useful x

  4. Thanks for the advice. A large 3 Phase screw compressor Cosrec so it will be as big a blaster as i can afford. Bicarb is a no go if it does not remove rust so that makes things alot easier. Will give scangrit a call tomorrow, thanks Paul. Anyone recommend a supplier of pots and kit etc?

  5. Hi guys and gals,

Just about to purchase a blaster for two 432's. What blast media do people recommend? I'm tempted to go bicarb but as i've never seen it in action worried it won't be 'man' enough...

    Best. C.

  6. Had a good look and can't find any more data plates :( Never mind. Can't find any green paint either although i suspect it will become a green machine in the near future :)

Can't lift a great amount Retriever, 6 MT, but for the moment thats all I need to restore a couple of 432's and at 2K I couldn't turn it down. The wife was not pleased with the purchase coming up to Christmas even when i sugested that she could use it as a washing line! Go figure? lol.

  7. Hi all,

Bought a cheap crane as it was time I needed some heavy lifting gear in the yard for a 432 pack lift and to my surprise it's ex MOD :-) . Did the MOD keep record cards for vehicles that didn't have a reg no. and if so who has them and are they available. Also would the MOD of written an operators manual or used the civy one?

    Cheers, C.

  8. On ebay at the moment there is "3 x Jaguar Jag CVRT J60 4.2L 6 cyl engines, 1 long and 2 short engines. Ex-MOD"

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-x-Jaguar-Jag-CVRT-J60-4-2L-6-cyl-engines-1-long-and-2-short-engines-Ex-MOD-/141000959663?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item20d44fe6af

Whats the difference between long and short engines (apart from the obvious that ones long and ones short lol)?
