A great weekend. The saturday night road run was brilliant too, just into Southport via the coast road and back.
Nice to meet you Brooky, shame you managed to get me in the picture of the K9! :-D
No hiding now then!!!!!
Likewise about meeting you
It was a good week end and I hope it goes from strength to strength and well done to the WEst Lancs section of the MVT for organising the military vehicles
-
And these......great weekend, very relaxed atmosphere and good to see the MV's parade on the runway.
Sorry forgot about the Huey...............not many military vehicle gatherings boast one of those

-
So thats a Huey, a Land Rover (mine) and a couple of K9's going. Anybody else on here entered?
As I said earlier I've been volunteered for the commentary and an early indication of what might be there might give me time to do a bit of research!!! :coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee:
According to the pre event literature there is a Chaffee and AMX13, Dingo, Bren Carrier,Diamond T.........
See you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Isn't that K2 Naafi van one of the PW Civil Defence trucks?
Not Civil Defence but converted post war for the AFS, converted from wartime Auxiliary Towing Vehicles.
Thesed are often seen at shows depicting wartime canteens.
Another case of history being distorted??
-
I'll be there as the Huey will once again putting in an appearance.
Worth going just to hear the Huey fly in, an amazing sound!!!
-
Anyone going? As usual I'll be taking my RAF Austin K9 down, so come over and say Hi! :-D
Austin
See you there!!!
have been asked by the organisers to do the commentry on the cavalcade of military vehicles, so will see you all I hope!!
Agreed about the issues at previous shows there used to bea nightmare with my CS8!! (no doors= no door locks!!)
New organisers this year for the military vehicles who tell me there are 87 vehicles booked in (if they all turn up it should be a good show)
-
Looking at the ex military dealers ads reminds me of the two K9 GS (one was FFW) that my late father bought in 1967 and 1968 from Housemans in Pateley Bridge Yorkshire.
They were both brand new (less than 100 miles on the clock)
The price?
One was £100 and the other £120
Happy days!!!!!!!!

I agree with some of the comments.
The hard shoulder IS NOT the place to play at being a good samaritan.
The highway code (the book we last read the night before we passed our test) clearly sets out the rules for the use of the hard shoulder.
There is no clause about good deeds by anybody.
It does however give very good and sensible advice for vunerable people who break down.
The roads would be a safer place if more people read and heeded the advice contained in the publication.
The latest edition is out and is available in all good booksellers

They look and act like a real vintage army truck should!!
Remember though it is not and never has been an ex military truck!!
It was supplied to the AFS
-
Must admit, if I saw a MV broken down on the hard shoulder I would stop.
If you do that you are breaking the law.
The hard shoulder is there to be used only in an emergency
The highway code states that you should not try to repair a vehicle on the hard shoulder but call the emergency services by using the road side phones.

As I understand it Loggy, there is only a requirement to present yourself at the training venue for 35 hours, you can can sit there with a pair of ear defenders on or even fall fast asleep as there is no assessment or exam.
There will be two types of driver CPC (DCPC)
DCPC is ONLY required if you intend to drive vocationally and starts on September 10th 2009
the first is the initial which will be required for anybody passing their test after this date. There is no need to attend training for any length of time only to pass the test which will be along the lines of the theory test. I have no doubt that some training organisations will however run training courses.
The second is the periodic which states that there must be 35hours of training within 5 years (i.e. by 10th September 2014) This can be undertaken as a block or in blocks of no less than 7 hours. (my company will be delivering the training to its drivers as a day a year for 5 years). This training is attendance onle with no test.
The training will be recorded and details kept by the DSA.
Alll existing drivers will be given "grandfather rights" and will be issued with the DCPC card when the periodic training has been completed.
If you do not intend to drive vocationally then there is no requirement for DCPC.
A fact that has escaped most people is that from September this year providing that the DCPC test has been passed then the age for driving an LGV will be 18.

we went 3 years ago , same field , same conditions .................
The site is owned by the Steam Fair ( I think) and I know that a lot of work has been done to try and put drains in.
A bit of a clue as to how badly drained the field is is the clumps of reeds growing everywhere!!!
If you thought the main field was bad you should have seen the camping field!!!
we had to have our caravan dragged out by a 4x4 tractor.
One section inside the craft tent was under water. Dont think we will be going again.
Dont think we will be going again

What is the RAF vehicle behind the Stolly? Do you have another picture of it please?
Its a post war Leyland Hippo 19H/1E Mark IV, think there is a picture of it in the Hippo gallery. If not I will try to dig one out.
Have also added a picture of the Chieftain and the Chaffee that were there.
Yes it was wet!!!

I am more interested in seeing things used, who can say what is "correct" for any vehicle. Ultimately it is up to the owner to paint it how they like, even if it is a "D-Day Hotchkiss". Is it correct to depict a Pioneer as a WW2 wrecker if it spent the vast majority of its working life as a civvy wrecker?
As for Army Gipsys, there were 15 short and 5 long wheelbase. I know of one of each complete and one swb chassis with a normal body.
LWB
SWB
standard body on army chassis
True
The problem is though that if vehicles are depicted as something they are not this distorts history.
I agree about the comments of the Pioneer, it did however spend some of its life as a military vehicle, therefore it can be depicted as coming from that period.
Other vehicles, the Hotckiss again as an example and possible the Gypsy are distorting history and in the future may be passed of as original, this also applies to some of the canteen vehicles that are depicted as WW2 when they were converted after the war for the AFS.
I know that evey owner can do what he likes with his vehicle, but that does still not make it right to portray it as something as something it isnt.
-
Yes it is an AFS reg. The Army ones are much rarer beast and have quite a few differences. I had assumed that it was one of the 1997 Measham sale batch but this is not the case. The chassis no. should be 16228 according to "The Green Machine" this was sold to a 'P Warner' prior to 1995 and the Gipsy Register chassis list has it owned by 'A Leyland'.
It looks very tidy though. This years Gipsy Owners Club rally is in Halifax at the end of June. If anyone is interested give me a shout for details.
Thought it was and agree about the military ones,I dont ever recall seeing one.
Is that an excuse though to depict a vehicle as something it isnt?
-
Having another look, I am now sure the chassis is QL as well, recognise the rear spring hangers.
I agree QL with later cab

Do you get any access to any publications archive with eitehr of these clubs.
MVT has a good library (just reorganised)
They are interested in all MV's
Articles in windscreen recently include Land rover etc.
-
Got to be the MVT for me
-
Given the registration number is the Gypsy ex AFS?
If it is then a bit of a shame to see it restored as ex military.
-
I'm booked in and will be there all weekend!
Good man,
A real enthusiast turning out for the whole weekend.
Hope to see you there, lets hope we have good weather!!!

We advise all our LGV drivers to copy their licences (both parts and both sides) before they send them to DVLA (for any reason!!) and too carefully check their entitlements and length of entitlement (not unknown for a driver to have type 2 diabetes only to have his LGV entitlement reduced to three years not 5years) on its eventual return.
At least if you have a copy of the original it is a starting point for any dispute.
I would also suggest that everybody checks the expiry date of the photo licence (item 4b) as it would not be beyond the realms of possibility for DVLA not to send a reminder.
It is also a good precaution to check someones licence if you are going to let them drive your vehicle, no licence category often means no insurance!!!
There is some good advice on the DVLA web site for licence checking and what to look for.
If it is an Eastern European licence the only advice I can give is to make sure there is no Tippex on it and it hasnt been copied too often!!!!!!!!

Try Midlands Publishing (The Ian Allan shop at Hinckley) I know they had reprints.
I also know the model shop (dont know the name) at Piece Hall in Halifax had copies last October.
They are reprints but looked very good
Cant remember the price, but not as much as above
