  1. Well it is a Kew-built Dodge 101a; originally supplied to Westmorland County Fire brigade in 1943 as a 5 ton truck. It stood in for the Windemere Leyland Cub pump escape which was seconded to Liverpool for the duration.

After the war it was given a makepover reappearing in the format shown as a Type A Water Tender; it had a Sigmund trailer pump (less trailer) fitted in the back and towed a second trailer pump.

Amazingly it was used until about 1974 (imagine being in a RTA on the M6 motorway and that turning up...) at which point it was sold by sealed bid tender. My dad was the highest bidder at £27 as I recall.

It was rallied into the 1980s and then lots of things seemed to be a higher priority and it fell into disrepair. I eventually dragged it out of an orchard in about 2004 and set about rebuilding it, getting it to the state shown by 2009.

In a history repeating itself moment I have found lots of other projects that fill my time and so I have not managed to get the Dodge here out to any rallies for a couple of years, and so my younger brother (in Cambs) is going to babysit it for me and get it out into the public eye. Even though it has been stood for 24 months we got it out at the weekend, it started first time and it drove a treat. It is all cleaned up now ready for its trip south this weekend.

This is what it looked like when I started the work:attachment.php?attachmentid=125249&stc=1attachment.php?attachmentid=125250&stc=1

Lots more pictures and a more fulsome story here:

All being well the Dodge and the Leyland with be reunited again in September at Haddenham Steam Rally. Both in the same family!

  2. Internal parts wanted for engine rebuild of a 4 cylinder Morris EK/EH engine (as fitted to the C8).

I have tried the usual suppliers such as Cox and Turner and FW Thorntons and have had some success there but now need the following:

    Valves and guides.

    Valve Springs.

    Timing chain.

Full gasket set ideally but just a head gasket would be fine.

    Many thanks

Could get valve springs made up. Got them made for the Leyland

  3. interesting and now we have no truck manufacturing in the UK...how the UK has been left behind...

Better tell that to the workforce at the DAF factory in Leyland. They assemble more wagons a year than the Motors every did. Also there are probably some chaps in Guilford who may dispute the comment

  4. Hi Guys

Looking for a WOT 2 rear Axle either complete or the Diff assembly, in useable condition.

Or any leads to one or perhaps there might be another Ford model that uses the same diff?

    Cheers

    Jules

Have a word with paulbrook on here

He did have a Ford back axle assembly, it was a torque tube one if that's any good

    Diff may be OK

  5. What is the legality of having a Tacho fitted and not using it? I have limited experience of tachos but one case I remember was taking the boss to the shops and back about 3 miles in a van equipped with a tacho. Next day the vans assigned drive went mental because the boss hadn't changed out the the tacho graph and the journey was recorded as his.

The vehicle was obviously "in scope" of drivers hours as it had a tacho fitted and I presume was being used in conjunction with a trade or business.

Therefore any driver of that vehicle is required to keep records of his driving

    So a couple of things

The regular driver should at the end of his shift removed and completed his tacho chart, leaving the chart in at the end of the shift can be construed as not complying with the EU drivers hours regs. The driving you did would appear on his chart as his driving

Secondly you should have inserted a chart to record your driving (however short) period

Also to comply with the EU drivers regs as you have driven a vehicle "in scope" you are required to complete records of your work and rest for the complete week (done by making manual entries on blank charts) even if this did not include driving duties

These would have to be retained by you for 28 days to be produced if required by an enforcement officer if you drove that van again and then returned to the office at the end of that period

Complicated I know for a three mile trip but those are the rules

If anybody need chapter and verse on both the EU regs and the domestic rules go to the DVSA website and download GV262 (this is the drivers hours rules document) Oh and its free!

  6. time to add some more to this tale

the jeep has been delivered the frame and body is a '43, bonnet seats and some other pieces slat grill axles and other bits unconfirmed yet as mentioned chassis plate gone just 2 rusty pins left. the tub plates are original but are for a slat grill 113097. NOVA form has the incorrect vin on 1132097 and when I emailed them to say there was an error on the NOVA form I got this reply

"It would appear that the vehicle is already on the NOVA system with the correct VIN i.e, 113097. It was applied for by the original importer.

The reason we were able to put it on and the fact it didn't come up as already on was due to the incorrect VIN being included.

In this instance, you would just go ahead and register the vehicle. The DVLA will not require a NOVA reference because it will already show up on the system."

I have had confirmation as to this jeep existing in the UK in the 70's is it still in the UK? or was it exported?

to say im worried is to say the least

I think you are correct to be worried

Firstly if there is no tag with a chassis number it will be near impossible to verify that the chassis number for an age related plate

The best I think you will have is a Q plate and a DVLA issued VIN Number

I may be wrong, I am often am!!

  7. Thanks very much for your reply.

I missed your first reply as I was typing my reply as you posted.

NOVA sacres me, I don't want to pay tax on something thats been here for 60 years, I assume I can tick a box to say its been here for ever? I don't think I will recover the original reg (no evidence I can get my hands on) so I will strat the ball rolling as a new application

I will give it a go and keep you informed.

    Thanks for your help

    Regards

    Dave

Just do the NOVA application, I know of people who have been in the same situation and have not had a problem

    Good Luck

  8. Thanks guys much appreciated, the Chassis number and body tag do indeed start with MC.

I can ask the previous owner if he can find pictures as you suggest but I suspect he couldn't find his a*$e with both hands.

Nice guy but I knew he was a big eccentric when he made me a cup of tea in a jam jar!

    He was a typical hoarder.

Anyone know how to recover a reg from DVLA or go about starting from scratch without a NOVA form?

    Cheers

    Dave

As I said above you need to make a NOVA declaration, there will be nothing to pay

It ticks a box for the dvla if the box is not ticked your application will be rejected

I think I have outlined the processes above for either retaining a number or applying for an age related plate

  9. OK

First thing first, make the NOVA declaration as you would with a recently imported vehicle

This will tick a box for the DVLA later on

Secondly has the vehicle been registered and do you know its reg number

If yes then go online and do a vehicle check on the DVLA website. If it comes back with a record then it is on the database and all you have to do is request a new V5

If it is not on the database then you need to use the V765 scheme. You will need proof that ties the chassis number to the number claimed. The dvla are very specific about the evidence required. An old style log book or a certified copy from the original county registration ledger or old not certificates are about the only acceptable evidence. The V765 application has to be submitted and completed by an authorised club.

If its not on the database or never been registered then you need to go down the V55 route for an age related number. You will have to have the vehicle inspected by a approved club ( the DVLA has a list) and dating evidence produced, this is then submitted to dvla along with the fee and completed V55 and eventually you should get an age related number

That lot is probably as clear as mud! However start the process before you strip the vehicle as for the inspection is has to be "reasonably complete"

If you want further clarification drop me a pm and I will try to help, I was MVT verification officer for a few years

    Hope that helps

  10. After a long absence, I'm back; work and health kept me too busy, not in a good way.

Now, esteemed Matador enthusiasts; I am trying to put together a decent post-war vehicle (in 1:76 scale) with an excellent upgrade set which includes the interior which I had thought to ignore. As does everyone else! I have trawled books and web, finding nothing. The question? My miniature vehicle will be an example in service in summer 1969. I know that the outside should (and will) be DBG, but inside? I have seen a photo of a cab (RN?) in Eau-de-Nil; is this also correct for Army vehicles? Was the bodywork similarly finished, and was the floor painted or plain wood?

Finally, would someone with a late Matador kindly wave a camera about in the back so I can see what went where, and in what form?

    Thank you all very much.

    Suspect DBG everywhere!!!

My wartime Hippo that served post war certainly was
