One they perhaps SHOULD have made?
1986: The Llama Project
The Llama is another interesting prototype.
Designed and developed in the mid 1980s as the successor to the 101 Forward Control, a number were built for evaluation by the Ministry of Defence.
The Llama used the chassis and many parts from the relatively new 110, so was permanent 4x4, and was fitted with the 3.5 litre Rover V8.
The 2.5 Litre Turbodiesel engine was also tested.
The vehicle was fitted with a Santana LT 85 gearbox, and power steering.
It had wider than standard axles, however.
The Llama also had a very modern tilt-forward fibreglass cab (to reduce weight), instead of the aluminium box cab of the 101.
Ten prototypes and two pre-production vehicles were built.
However, the project was cancelled, (the MoD having chosen the Pinzgauer as the 101 fc's replacement) and only a few remain, with one on display at the Heritage Centre.

Great video Andy. Thanks for posting. Daz

I agree with that approach! It's a heavy and awkward enough bit of kit without being seized on :shake: Good luck mate.

Had to free off one of my walking beams too Rob. I can only say it helps to be persistent and walk away occaisonally :argh: After a couple of days trying with no success it decided to drop overnight and has been fine ever since.
Looks like you're doing a great job.

Welcome to the friendly forum Hezekiah. There's bound to be LOADS of stuff on here to keep you going for many nights to come.:yawn::yawn: Daz

Mmm. This does look a bit like a good home-brewed conversion to me, but in the back of my mind I'm sure I saw a feature on 88" Prototype FC land rovers several years ago in a Land Rover Magazine. I think Steve Graham (Services) from the North East may have found one and took it home to restore??? Anybody in that area who can verify this? He is an avid collector of protos and early production stuff but I can't remember well enough...... Pretty sure there was more than one different version.

Anyone know where I can get hold of some proper handles for the bonnet sides on my Explorer? I'm currently making do with some from a big chest of drawers...:red::red::red: Thanks Daz.
-
Hi Steve. If your Explorer used to belong to Paul Thompson I remember it being featured more than once in the now defunct '4x4 Magazine'. As I remember, the tinwork was getting bad but he was using it off-road and loving it. Might be worth keeping a lookout for some of these mags at shows etc. This would be maybe 15-20 yrs ago. Glad to see you still use it properly. :clap:Cheers. Daz

Would be good to know how many of these are still around. I know Natts is, but what about the others? Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting Andy. Nice photos. Some unusual bodwork on a couple, but I'm not sure about #7 "How to disguise your Pioneer as a Series 2 Land Rover" :nono:

:cry::cry: Nice one Daz ! Everything comes to he who waits ! :-D
Har Har!! Would have been quicker to walk to HMVF Towers with the photos. Must try harder next time! A bit of TLC needed for the old girl now....

Lovely motor though, hey?

Below is a couple of pictures of the only Pioneer I saw during my time in Normandy.
I passed this in the roadworks south of J9 on the Northbound M5 on wednesday last. It was on the back of an ERF artic. Lovely looking motor in the flesh. Would like to have a walk round it sometime.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

After a bit of a search for gear oils for the Explorer I found Witham oils and Paints http://www.withamgroup.co.uk/ who have depots in Lincoln, Lowstoft and Soham near Ely. They have SAE 90 & 140 on the shelf and can get many paints including DBG. The paint I had from them before has lasted well. 25 litres of oil works out about £ 45 + VAT.
Might be useful to someone??

Looks like it's coming along nicely big Chris. Can you tell me where you got your pipes for the front brakes with the spiral shields as mine are u/s? Ta very much. Remember seeing your motor for sale, but never got round to having a look. keep up the good work. would like to see more pics when you have them. Cheers. Daz

Thanks adrian and Scott for the info. Just a shame that another is being left to rot when it could be useful to someone. Like you say, some people want a fortune to sell and the vehicle just disappears into a heap of rust

Has anyone else seen what I think is a Martian standing in a field just south of J24 on the Northbound carriageway of the M5? It's behind a garage and looks in fairly good nick, but I can't get a good look as I'm always driving. It's painted white but when I came past last time it seems trees have started to grow through it. A good project for someone.....

Well done mate! Another one back in action :dancinggirls:

Safely delivered to it's new home. No more restoration work has been done in the last year or so but Thor has been in use on winching and recovery jobs around the farm. I hope to start work again this summer and get the cab completed and the rest of the chassis repaired and painted before tackling the brakes which don't work at all.

Since neither of us had much experience with panels we got help from our friend Tony. All the panels were made up and new doors manufactured. I had moved house from Cambridgeshire to Cornwall at this point, so I jumped at the chance to get Thor transported back to Cornwall. since this all happened very quickly only the rear cab panels behind the driver and passenger were bolted on before loading on the lorry later that day.
