Lets not start the 'registering a wide vehicle debate' I'm tired of that one!!!
The Stalwart is 3 inches to wide to drive on the road, (without a movement order) and maybe carrying it as a load has real advantages, because this IS completely legal. That was exactly my thinking, don't piss about with a diesel conversion just get a plant lorry and move it about on that instead! And at the same time get something that I can move the scammell and possibly a 432/tracked rapier on...
-
You are aware that the stalwart is overwidth for use on the road under its own power , or to be carried as a load, without applying for a Movement order two days before each journey.
I was aware that it is over width to be registered, I am aware of the movement order but could you explain it in more detail to me please?
If I were to purchase another stolly which is already registered for the road I presume that I could use that (On the road) provided that I applied for a movement order?
Since you do not ask questions about driver licencing I assume you hold either C orC+E category, or neither option is open to you at present. At the moment I have neither, so a rigid vehicle might be a better start point if it will do what I need.

First time I have heard rust called a "livery"!!!
Thought that would amuse a few folk! It is a kind of pink rust though, very rare I understand....
-
Ahhhhh ! I think it would fit nicely between the Scammell and the Stollie in that big shed you've got mate ! Did you see the programme about restoring an old Matador timber tractor on sky tv the other night ! Very entertaining ! :-D
I don't think it would fit Andy  did you notice its in the same 'livery' as the scammell?
Probably best I didn't see the tv show! I have however lost my dvd with the salvage squad stolly restoration on it  I've had it for years and now I've finally bought a stolly I lose the dvd :argh:

Why not arrange a show near to your home and let everyone else get lowloaders Dunc !
Great Idea, just need to think of a good name now. Obviously I would provide the dancing girls
:dancinggirls::dancinggirls:
I'll be interested to hear the replies to mate ! Good thread ! :bow:Figured that other folks must have thought about transport issues and there is a wealth of information on here. Would be nice to gather all that info in one thread, for instance I didn't know there was private HGV tax?! And I'm still not clear on the limitations!
-
This one kept my Scammell company for the last 10 years, its available for restoration if anyone is interested?!

HI All,
As you may already have gathered I have a passion for large rusty mv's and living in the middle of nowhere! I also have a habit of buying slow 'not great on the road' type stuff.
I would dearly love to get to more shows and the only way that is going to happen is if I sort out transport for my toys. All the big shows are an 900 mile round trip for me
I am completely ignorant of anything truck related but have come to the conclusion that I have two options!
1) Tractor unit and low loader trailer
2) Plant type rigid truck
I would appreciate information from anyone on the following:
- Recommendations, what do you use and why?
- What to avoid
- Tax, testing and insurance advice
- Suitability to carry a tracked vehicle of 14 tons, a stolly and a Scammell
I will have a limited budget too! I've spent all my money saving mv's from the international Olympic committee :-D
- Recommendations, what do you use and why?

Very interested to follow this thread, I always intended on buying a petrol explorer and converting to lpg and modern ignition. Just bought a 6lw pioneer first!
I'd like to see how your lpg system is setup, any pics for the posting?!
-
I've got 100 or so pics of the one in Monte's, pm me if you need any... I've also heard it run, it was sweet!
I do hope it finds a home, would have been a much better bet than the one I bought but then I don't take the easy route!

All confused so I went onto google and searched images for cheesehead which all came back looking like this:
Then tried typing in 'pan head' but accidentally typed in 'head' on its own and ended up with some very 'unpostable' images indeed!
Might just use allen bolts....
-
I'm guessing thats the one on youtube? Watched that video over and over again looking for cab clues. Anyonw know the owner?
-
Pan head.
But if the pix Andy just posted look like round head to me so perhaps it aint to important really.
If you can tell that from those pictures I think I need my eyes tested! I knew it was a scammell but that's about it!
No mate ,but i do admire you blokes on this sort of restoration, best of luck.:-DSomeone somewhere must have had a good chuckle.... the sandblaster got sand in everything and now I can't hear in my right ear! Shouted at mrs madrat earlier as I thought there was a problem with the phone, was reminded that the problem lay with the operator of the phone

I'll let you have them for £25.00... just hit the best offer button :-D
Top man, Thanks! Just paid for them, I guess it was worth dropping £10 to stop me clogging up the forum with stupid questions :n00b:
You know that now I'll end up buying an mk2 to justify owning the manual
From memory those tanks 1 and 2 are engine oil and hydraulic oil.No 4. is attached to those cables and is the securing plate for the fuel tank.
Niel has answered a couple and the others i cant remember right now.
You boys must remember where the fuel goes, I take it that it goes in the biggest hole (No 10)?!

I have a couple of Stolly manuals on eBay... http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/afv-milspec :coffee:
Just spotted those... would you take a 'best offer' of £30 from a fellow hmvf member :cool2:
-
Thanks Andy, those are some great pics of the cab. I'm working to pictures in my 'millitary scammell illustrated' book and I've noticed that almost all the cab metalwork are different! I guess its to be expected on a 65 year old truck.
Wouldn't mind watching antarmike make up panels, the ones for his explorer were a work of art! I'm too embarrassed to post close up pics of my work now
Still I'm happy to be making progress!

The screw heads should be slotted pan head to look right on an Explorer, I suppose the same on Pioneers. I used cheese heads and they look wrong, as do round head, all screws should be slotted. sorry if I'm too late with this info.
Looking Good.
Thanks! Am I right the difference is that the pan heads have a rounded edge and the cheese heads have a straight edge?
I've just got things held temporarily for now, but need to start thinking about getting the right bolts ordered up, any ideas for a supplier?

I've got a rare opportunity to get some bits for the stolly so I was having a better look at what I'd bought yesterday. Came to the conclusion that I dont have much Idea whats what on the stolly and wondered if you folk could help me identify some bits (or lack of) from the following pics...
1+2) Any idea what these bits are for?
3) Where should these go to?!
4) What the hell is that for and where would it go?!
5) Something to do with brakes? Two of the pipes are cut, any idea where they would go to?!
6) What should have been on top of here and where should the cut wires go to?
7) Should these be connected? And what are they for?
8) What are the wires around the fans for?
9) Any idea what these pipes are?
10) Fuel filler?
11) Is this for engine oil?!
Thanks in advance!

I made good progress over the weekend on the Scammell, got various parts of the cab finished including the curved sections above the doors. Its not concourse and I've no idea how they should look as there was nothing left to go on but I'm happy and It'll keep the rain out! :-D
-
Welcome to the forum! Scammell owners are well looked after here you'll be most welcome :-D
Regards,
Madrat
-
Neil,
Great to see those pics, she looks outstanding! Hoping that if I do go down to RR Services for some of the spares I can have a look, it'll give me a benchmark for what to aim for on my mk1 :cool2:
I bet you can't wait to get her out and about again!
Good work and money well spent I'd say...
All the best

Jack/6x6, thanks for the kind words!
Is there anything on a Scammell that is small?!Found lots of small holes in the cab, does that count?!
We tool the wheels off the rear of the vehicle to clean the walking beams, found that there are two giant slotted 'screws' in the beams. I amused myself thinking about the size of the screwdriver required to undo them :-D (The flat of the screwdriver would need to be 5" across!)
Gritineye (Or anyone else for that matter) talk to me about the bolts I should be using for the cab? I'd like to try and get that detail right if possible!
-
 I knew that would noise up some of the members infected with scammellitis! Perhaps I should state 'Stolly more exciting than pioneer' I've still got plans for the explorer that lives close to us :cool2:STOLLY MORE EXITING THAN ASCAMMELL? :box:
go wash your mouth out young man!!
Well the 101 isn't sulking no more, she's off to a new home soon. The guy who drove her when she was in service tracked me down and offered to buy her! So she'll be happy in her new home reunited with her old master!what with the 101 sulking somewhere as well!
Thanks! We'll be back on the show scene next year armed with more beer and more time :beer:Hearty congratulations to you both, all the best for the future, :yay: -
I don't think she realises how lucky she is! I've heard that other girls are forced to lie on a beach or tour romantic European destinations eating fine food and drinking champagne every night! :nono:your missus is clearley a luck lady being allowed to spend her honeymoon on the truck!
The stolly keeps talking to me when I'm working on the Scammell, I've had to separate the two for just now. I think this is the best way to keep up morale on a rebuild, simply buy a more exiting project and leave that as a reminder as to what you get to play with when the first one is finished :banana:Glad to see you are still having fun with the Pioneer and not neglecting her now you are a Stollie man too ! -
Hello! We've been rather busy here for a while now and I'm pleased to say that 'Mrs Madrat' is now legally a 'Mrs' following our wedding last Saturday.
Now in time-honored MV tradition our honeymoon consisted of a thorough cleaning of our Scammell in preparation for paint!
We borrowed the barons diesel powered pressure washer for the task as the steam cleaner stopped working, unfortunately its so powerful that mrs madrat was unable to stand upright so I sent her home and went about the dirty job myself (Cleaning the Scammell).
Also took off the ballast holder thing and the front wings, my thinking is to reduce her to the minimum number of parts, get that all painted up and then when I get time I'll prepare and paint some of the bolt on items and get them put back together.
Two days later you could eat your dinner off the chassis, hopefully I can find some time over the next week to get the cab finished off and a coat of paint on her! :cool2:
Low Loader/Plant Truck/Transport Question
in I may be stupid, but......
Posted
Thanks for the info guys, I figured that the tractor/trailer combo would be more expensive and more to go wrong. I have pretty much concluded that the plant truck was the way to go on the following basis:
Centre of gravity was a concern, the stolly looked fine on one but I did think that the scammell would either be too top heavy or appear unsafe?
I still think this is the way to go, paying another company to transport them to shows will bankrupt me! I reckon for instance that it would cost me £2-3k to attend W&P, I love this hobby but I cannot justify spending that sum of money on transport! I've got too much scrap to buy!
Plan B is to LPG a stolly, fit dog clutches to the driveshafts to make it 6x2 and attend a few local car shows, not quite the same as cruising round W&P in something cool that folk would genuinely appreciate... Obviously I would need to apply for the correct movement papers to do this
