  1. Twenty hours you say, is a man by the name of Guinness standing by taking note? :-D

Thought your cab took 80 hours?! I thought that was good going... I've still got to make the doors, rebuild most of the windscreen, make the floor which will take me ages (Wood = No Welding :nono:) do the roof, paint and prime the whole thing..

I'll be happy if I can finish it in the 80 hours :yay:

  2.:bow: Very impressed mate ! You've put me to shame ! I think you will have a fleet of these before to long at this rate ! Well done and keep those pictures coming ! Very good for motivating me mate ! Andy :-D
Thanks Andy, the kind words on here help keep me motivated too! My plan is to take off as much stuff as possible leaving her drivable, restore that bit and then work on the other parts as and when I can find time.

Looking forward to W&P, don't have a clue what to expect as we are first-timers! Will have cash in pocket and a van to take all the purchases home, just a shame we were too late to get camping sorted out on site

  3. frame.jpg

That should make things easier to work on!

    back.jpg

Cab looking all shiny and new, ready for some primer soon....

    cab.jpg

It can't be seen in this picture but there is a lot of work in the door area, the original cab was too far gone to make out any original features so I'm working from pictures in my now very dirty scammell book. Not easy but it should be a relatively faithful reconstruction.

I used a load of metric bolts to hold things together for now, I'll get some bolts to match the originals during the week.

If I can get a couple of days free'd up this week I'll maybe get the roof on! I've got a guy coming to look at my 101 on Thursday which might give me pocket money for a new toy :cool2:

  4. Evening all, whilst I thought the cab would take a couple of days it seems that finding a couple of days has proved harder than first thought!

I think I've spent 20 hours or so on the cab now, most of the frame was beyond repair so large sections have been replaced. It was good to finally get some new tin on the cab, some of the folds and corners took a lot of time. The roof will be tricky me thinks!

I searched everywhere to find some 10x10x1 channel to form a gutter above the doors, then had a brainwave... B&Q stocks various small steel sections and I found a perfect profile to keep the rain out.

Lets let the pictures do the talking.............. :-D

    Frontpanel.jpg

Rusty front panel, this took for ever to make a new panel as there are about 500 holes in the thing that needed to be driller or marked!

    Newfrontpanel.jpg

New front panel now attached to the truck, looking good!

    side1.jpg

Most of the cab frame was too far gone, sections were replaced one at a time to prevent the cab from losing its shape!

    side2.jpg

First panel goes on, the folded section was hard to form without distorting the back panel, had to use a number of tiny spot welds to hold it in place whilst panel beating. Couldn't find any clamps and didnt fancy the 2 hour drive to go get some so I made my own! :cool2:

    cominout.jpg

Honestly not sure why I didn't think of this earlier but I decided that it would be best to remove the frame for the rear body, this will make it far easier to paint the cab and get at the chassis for blasting and painting. In went the forklift to drag the Scammell out of the shed.

Health and Safety officers look away now!

  5. A friend put one in a Stalwart.

Interesting you should say that! Been offered a stolly with a dead engine, found some references to this conversion on the yahoo group but couldn't find much detail on the conversion.

Do you have any more info on the conversion?

  6. Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone could give me some info on the Rolls Royce K60. I understand it was used in the FV432 power pack and that its a multifuel engine, apart from that I can't find any information or pictures on t'interweb.

Do they still come up for sale? Any idea what the going rate is?

    Thanks,

    Duncan

  7. I think I need to see one in the flesh to get my head around it all!

how can you get it REALLY stuck?

Getting things really stuck has never been a problem for me, there are some nasty bits out on the hill just ready to catch out an unwary Scammell or Stolly :shake:

Keep going with the 101 rebuild, the guy who bought my second 101 did an outstanding nut and bolt rebuild of it. You will end up with something very special.

  8. Hi Guys,

Thanks for the response, I'm not bored of the Scammell but I am a bit bored of the 101  I love them to bits but I've seen the dark side! Always had plans to do a coiled 101 but my current one is too good to start messing around with.

Comments on loss of off-road ability noted, you will see from my scammell postings that I am rather partial to a bit of off-road activity! Long term I will need to get a low loader for transporting the Scammell but thats an expensive option!

I wasn't aware of how serious the wind up problems were, variations in tyre circumference make perfect sense and I could believe that they are more likely to cause breakages than a few twists and turn in the road.

Any idea how well they take to LPG? For off road use 'Red' LPG is around 40p/litre so a bit more sensible than petrol at 120p.

Thanks for the input, anyone going to have one at W&P?

  9. Hi, I'm considering purchasing a stolly and had a question about the transmission! I understand the 'wind up' problems and wondered if it was possible to remove 4 of the propshafts connecting the bevel boxes in order to make it into a 6x2 for road use?

Does anyone have a diagram of the transmission layout?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Duncan

  10. I'm sure now you have the Scammell she can't keep her hands of you

Did you not see the state of her hands?! No-one would want those grubby mits all over them :nono:

I have found that most men are repelled by the faint smell of gear oil that she gives off, so I needn't worry about her straying, unless there are scammell owners around ......

  11. ide say ud be prity much have the cab done in a mounth or so

A month!! I was thinking it might take me a few days!

I think that the weekend is free and mrs madrat is finished teaching for the summer so theres no excuses for her... I shall post progress for your amusement :cool2: anyone taking bets?

  12. Ok so I was feeling brave yesterday and thought I'd have a go at the cab (As you do of an afternoon) theres no going back now! Funny how 3 hours can result in so much change.. here goes :-D

    mini-StripDown1.jpg

I started by removing bolt on things, took the cage off which weighs a ton! Although it had collected a lot of dirt whilst off roading :nono:

    mini-StripDown2.jpg

The sides came off easily enough and I was able to talk the door into falling off :cool2:

    mini-StripDown3.jpg

The rear of the cab wasn't as easy, lots of inaccessible screws and other parts passing through it. It was obvious that the cab went on before the winch and back body! Large hammer consulted.

    mini-StripDown4.jpg

Starting to tackle the other side now, the roof came off very easy indeed!

    mini-StripDown5.jpg

3 hours later this was what I was left with! A Scammell Skeleton!

    mini-StripDown6.jpg

I guess I can't go back now! Time to break out the wire-brushes and sand blaster :cool2: anyone free at the weekend?!

  13. It was a great (If Wet) day out, that winch is very impressive! I shall have to give the one on the pioneer a try.

It was great to get a go of the explorer, the power steering and better clutch make a HUGE difference to the driving experience!

Perhaps I should re-open negotiations for the 680 powered one that I looked at some time ago? :cool2: Don't tell Mrs Madrat please....:nono:

  14. The flappy door is rather annoying, although with no passenger door theres not much point in shutting it!

I've added the first video and another one to the HMVF TV site:

Loads more video's to add, just need to edit out some of the language :nono: that steering off road is hard work!

  15. Ok,

So I got the heads back on today, fairly straight forward and after bleeding the fuel system she fired right up. Good news is that with oil up to temperature I'm getting 45-50 PSI for the engine and about 5 PSI on the gearbox :-D

Brakes are starting to work and the stupidly heavey steering and clutch are getting better! Still hard work though with no power steering

Decided it would be rude not to test out the limits of traction so me and BaronVonCooper headed out for a play. Loads of videos to upload but heres a taster:

  16. I got one head back on last night, its been a crazy week so far so not had as much free time as I thought I'd have!

How good is the Castle Fraser show? We might come up north at the weekend to admire the explorer in person?! Let me know which day you were thinking of going....

  17. Hey Croc,

Great to see you getting out and enjoying your explorer, your blog gives me great re-assurance that there are other nutters out there running around in 'Rolling Restoration' vehicles!

Can't wait to get mine to a stage when I can take it out and scare some oncoming traffic! :nono:

    Keep up the good work!

    Dunc
