  1. I'm trying to figure out what red oxide primer to use on the Scammell. Years ago a friend of mine painted an old rusty trailer with red oxide and never top-coated it with anything, its still not rusting. I bought some 'red oxide' primer in a spray tin which turned out to be rubbish and have no rust inhibiting properties at all :argh: And the zinc 182 primer I have doesn't seem much better. My question is what primers have you guys used successfully and what should I look out for? I only wish to paint this thing the once! Thanks in advance!
  2.:rofl::rofl: I nearly caused an accident by streaking about the place! I was driving down by the main road and a guy in a milk truck did the mother of all double takes then nearly went off the road. I think it was a double take, could have been that the smoke obscured his view of the road
  3. Thanks for the kind words guys, it was great to get away from work for a whole 2 days! That's not the worst idea, not really a problem just now but I won't have so much patience once she is painted! Quite looking forward to getting things moved on, hopefully building a house in the summer and she would be really useful for pulling trees out etc!
  4. Evening folks! Well its been a seriously bust few months and nothing has been done on the Scammell. Finally managed to clear my feet to take a 2 day break from work and get things moving again. The truck hasn't run since the cab was replaced so the first job was to get her going again, I was going to start by replacing the floor but I decided this was best left until everything mechanical was A1. I decided to make a temporary seat so I can drive her around :drive: might have made it a little bit higher than I should have but I think its a fine piece of clip on scrapyard engineering! :-D There were a number of oil leaks which I needed so sort out, one was from the flexi hose that goes to the oil pressure gauge, I took the flexi to bits and plugged the end with solder, this will do til I can find a replacement. Next job was to re-fit the diesel filters in the cab, I cleaned them out which was clearly needing done! Unfortunately when tightening filter number 2 the bolt snapped, it was clear that the water sitting in the filter for the last 15 years had rusted it badly. Unfortunately the assembly had been pressed together and I couldn't get the bits apart. I decided to break the bit out the bottom so I could re-weld the 'bolt' and then welded the assembly back into the cup. Turned out to be a bit neater than I though it would turn out and will do until I can find a replacement. Fitted the batteries and she fired up a treat, I spent a load of time cleaning and re-fitting the rather complicated accelerator linkage. Unfortunately when trying to drive her out the shed I found the clutch was siezed on :argh: I think the pressure washing must have got the clutch wet and it seized up, managed to get her out into the fields so drove around for ages with the clutch pressed in and eventually things free'd off. By the end of the day she was driving great, managed to get into 5th for a time at a dizzy 15mph or so! The pigeons had taken a dislike to the scammell so I spent a load of time washing the mess off. Next job is to get everything mechanical working perfectly and then bring her in for paint! Watch this space......
  5. Hi All, I've been trying to figure out the best way forward for my mk1 stolly restoration! Could anyone tell me if the lower part of the hull is the same on the mk1 as it is on the mk2? For instance could the mk1 cab top be fitted onto a mk2 hull? I think I can get a very sad mk2 at a good price and make one running truck out of the two! Its either a cab swap or everything mechanical into the mk1. Thanks!
  6. Great progress Jim! The steam washer is indeed the best way to get all that crap off. I've always been a bit nervous about sand blasting without removing parts. Ours was misbehaving the day I was washing mine so had to do with a diesel driven one, looks life the scaler is doing a good job. I'll need to dig mine out when I'm closer to paint! What Paint/Primer are you intending on using?
  7. That's very interesting, I've got the vehicle record card somewhere and should post an image of it to see if anyone on here can decipher it. Let us know if you find anything conclusive on the history. Regards, Duncan
  8. Thanks for all the posts guys, what a fantastic collection of information and knowledge! All your help is very much appreciated! Regards, Duncan :yay:
  9. Certainly not mine, its not had any mechanical work done to it for 15 years! Did you end up getting one Carbuilder2002? Those Manby stolly's are looking rather sad now  The manby advert was one of the reasons I ended up buying this one, I've got a soft spot for these unloved trucks! Just got me thinking  Thanks for the positive comments Daz, this is going to make the Scammell resto look like an oil change, looks like 2010 will be a quite year for business so hopefully will have a stack of time then to get stuck into it!
  10. Great to see progress on your truck Rob! I'm impressed at the amount of great Scammell info currently being posted on the forum, keep it coming! Best of luck, Duncan
  11. Great to see so much progress Jimh! Let us know how you get on with the history search, I think mine (Chassis 6002) is from the same batch of 200 ordered at the end of the war. If you want to check anything on mine then just PM me, I don't think you can be more than an hour away from me! Good luck! Duncan
  12. Cheers Tony, I did wonder about using treated pine. If the scammell was rare or unusual I'd make sure it was original but I'd rather get this one done and get on with saving something else!
  13. Hi all, Apart from the scammells I presume that a number of MV's use timber in their construction and I would be interested to hear what you restorers out there have used? Does anyone have any suggestions of what to use, or indeed what not to use?! And are there any online suppliers worth speaking to? There's quite a lot of wood missing from the scammell so I need to find something relatively economical, there was so little left of my scammell I'm not too concerned about originality although I welcome any comments! Thanks in advance, Duncan
  14. Cheers for the positive comments Daz! Let me know how you get on with a timber supplier. £2000 is a lot of money for a few bits of wood! You could buy a rusty wreck of a scammell for that! :cool2: I've been so busy of late that I haven't had a chance to work on her, I did get the cab into primer before the window fell apart! That looks fun to reconstruct! :argh:
  15. Great job Nick! She looks really clean and tidy in those videos  The farmer who looks after my toys doesn't seem bothered about crop damage, see the following link for evidence! Was a shame that mine wasn't running that day, really need to find some more free time! Keep up the good work...
  16. Well done for getting her home Neil! That's still a short list compared with mine! :-D Can't wait to see her in the flesh next year!
  17. Cheers Andy! I've used Zinc182 primer on mine, hopefully that should do the trick.. I should have a good update on progress in a few weeks time :cool2: Keep the pictures coming!
  18. Andy, Great to see some pics of you making progress on Daisy :-D the walking beam looks great all painted up! Is that just standard grey primer or something special? I'm in the process of pulling my finger out and getting some paint on mine... Keep up the good work!
  19. Congratulations on the new acquisition! He looks good! Cant wait to see a few video's once you get the clutch back together :cool2: Good luck!
  20. Thanks, always interested to know the differences between these engines. I agree that the diagrams on Gardner enthusiast are great. Don't suppose you would want to sell one of your many exhaust manifolds? :cool2:
  21. Slightly off-topic but welcome to the form Jimh, not only am I delighted that someone saved the other pioneer from Monte's but you cant be more than an hour away from me! Can't be any help with the dash, I took a pic of your one to help me out! My dials are just rusty circles (But the needles still move!) Regards, Duncan I don't suppose you might consider parting with one Richard?! I've been struggling to find gauges :-(
  22. Keep up the good work, that motor looks cleaner than mine! Is that an oil filler bolted to the side of the head in pic2? I don't have one of them!
  23. Good job Norman, she looks great! Definitely the most exciting part of this type of rebuild is getting here to run for the first time, good luck! :yay:
  24. I agree I could do it cheaper but we are quite a bit out of the way! I tried to get a stolly moved 500 miles recently at short notice and the cost was going to be £2600+Vat  wouldn't like to be let down on a back load and end up forking out for that! Might be cheaper to swim it down after all, not sure if the scammell will fit in the back tho? :n00b:
  25. Yup sure will but still going to be a problem going a good distance, I'd rather not tow with it on the road, just to be safe.... Should have made that clear, I would only be moving one vehicle at a time! The pioneer is over width but can be registered differently (lets not get into it here!)
